Trump’s trade and environment policies are a disaster for car makers

... at the rate it's going we'll be lucky if we don't end up an irrelevant backwater.
Give it 6 more months. The Republican Party has already destroyed over a century of progress in the first 6 months of this year, shouldn't take much longer than that get to back to the 1600s and the full establishment of Gilead.

Anecdotally, a family member works in the automotive industry. Not one of the big automakers, but a very large supplier that you've all likely heard of. His entire business unit was just forced to take a "temporary" 10% pay cut, and in addition to that there are 5 mandatory furlough days, i.e. unpaid time off. This will continue on a quarter-by-quarter basis for the foreseeable future, and if things don't improve then I assume layoffs are the next step.

Their upper management did make clear this is a direct result of tariffs. Their CFO straight up said they have lost the ability to forecast because of how rapidly and irrationally the government policy changes.
I assume the CFO (and everyone else in the C suite, anyone with director or VP in their title) also took an equivalent pay cut, as well as a salary reduction for the 5 mandatory furlough days?

Yeah, of course not.

People should realize that things are all going to plan. The Russians have groomed their stooge Krasnov (a.k.a. Tя☭mp) for decades to do exactly what he is doing; burying the U.S.
OT rant

One of my pet peeves is people using the Russian letter “Ya” to pretend that is the reversed Latin letter “R” in order to signal some connection to Russia. When in fact all it does is create a non-sensical spelling.

This has nothing to with Trump, but when I see what you wrote I sound out the Russian word as “T-Ya-M-R”.

I don't know if you're joking but at this point I actually do think he's a Russian agent. It's the one thing that accounts for his wholesale and widespread destruction of US industry, governmental effectiveness and global influence.

It can't just be stupidity, his actions are too effective to be mere chance.
It's just a wonderful coincidence that what Project 2025 or the Thiel dark enlightenment disciples are doing to the USA just aligns with what Putin and his ilk want to happen to the USA.

The young Russians I have talked to don't say it out loud, but they hate it. They miss all the wonderful American and Western European things they used to be able to buy.

Foxconn has also announced that it will be shutting down its planned EV manufacturing activities in Lordstown, Ohio, due to a "soft market" in North America and pivoting instead to "AI server and cloud computing hardware production" at the site.

It seems the market oracles have declared that EVs are out and AI is in.

"We delivered solid performance despite a challenging macroeconomic backdrop, thanks to the adaptability and focus of our team in navigating a dynamic environment," said Taoufiq Boussaid in an elegant bit of business-speak that elides the true horror of the situation.

And a nice comment on the (very well worded) quote.

To be fair, Lucid is matching the soon-to-be-discontinued 'woke' $7,500 EV credit, so a new Lucid Air Pure starts at $72,400-$7,500=$64,900, which translates to about $529/month for a lease -- which is nothing like writing a check for $100K.

See here for that current offer, (archived version, so it can be seen by any future readers).
I don't why people are downvoting this. They gave factual information. If it's about the price of that car, people spend that kind of money on big stupid trucks all the time.

I suppose they are in a situation where they need the best CFO they can get for any money. And unpaid furlough means you keep employing people whose work you don't need at the moment. I suppose the CFO's work is needed.

Big winner here? China. The US's automotive companies will fall further and further behind in the electrification game as they go back to hiding behind ICE vehicles, while China becomes the main automotive supplier for the rest of the world. When historians look back and try to figure out where the US finally ceded leadership in automotive manufacturing, 2025 will be the inflection point.
Does the US really have the leadership in automotive industry? I only lived in South America and Europe, and in both places you are much more likely to find European brands than US ones

f) It's Biden's fault
g) the mainstream media is the enemy for reporting it
h) Deny any culpability
i) Dance on the roof
j) Claim he's the best thing ever for the auto industry and they should thank him
this is exactly the (post)communist manual for maintaining the power for so long after the soviet crash. just point the finger to the unawaring democrats and it is done. once ones mind is bent to see the enemy in everything, but the neo-communists.

Our former allies and trading partners must really hate us now for the mess we made.

Not hate - more... pity.

Shooting yourself in public, both barrels into the feet, reload repeat, leads to pity - the same pity as you have for a geriatric uncle lost in drug and alcohol fuelled paranoid fantasies so that they sit in the corner, covered in their own waste and withdrawing from the rest of the world.

I'm around a constant churn of young adults in my work and life. Intelligent and educated people under 30 generally seem to have no qualms about a potential move to China (some already have) and, in fact, see more opportunities there. The political culture of the CCP and mass surveillance doesn't bother them, they think the U.S. government is just as bad now and will be far worse in the future once we go full fascist.

Sadly, it's now difficult to pose a counter argument.
The difference between a murderous communist tyranny and a murderous fascist tyranny is that in the murderous communist tyranny they'll leave you alone if you do what you're told and praise the Dear Leader. In the murderous fascist tyranny it's not what you do that gets you in trouble, it's who and what you are. Thus, it doesn't matter what you do, the fascists will kill you anyway.

I know I'm generalising, but it's a good rule of thumb.

Welcome to the Nordics, where anglophones use our three extra letters to make nonsensical words. Å is not an A, Ö is not an O, and Ä is not an A. They're distinct sounds which exist in English but doesn't have letters for them.

Å = pronounced as awe
Ö = like the U in burn, or sun, or turn.
Ä = like bAd, sAd, mAd.

What I do not get, I do not live in the US, is where all that tariff money goes to. Wasn't Donald going to reduce the deficit with it? Sure there will be a 200 000 000$ new ballroom, but that is peanuts compared to the new income.

If I were Donald, I'd brag about all the great new things tariffs make possible. But it seems rather quiet in that area. Or is that news skipped here in the EU?

No, it’s clearly hate. US media isn’t reporting the level of overseas protests being directed at US policy. Over a 100k Australians crowded the Sydney bridge last week, this event protesting US and other nations support of Israeli genocide in Gaza. Not a peep on US media. There have been other events across the EU firmly aimed at Trump.

Detroit is quite pleased to continue building pickups and large SUVs....on which it continues to enjoy a 25% duty protection against foreign-built vehicles.

American here who would buy a Chinese car, specifically the BYD Shark-6 if it were legal. My last American car left my life in 2003. Subaru Baja after that, but that was my last American made car (Made in Indiana). I have a 1994 Toyota Pickup that has been reliable for for three decades. My 2019 Soul has never had an issue that wasn't caused by idiocy on my part.

Here's the thing about cars made here or anywhere else in the world. China is the largest supplier of parts to all of the manufacturers. There is no way that any car here will not have Chinese content. Moot point now. Economy is stalling like an airplane running out of lift. Slow now but a fast ride down soon.

Edit: Needed to correct grammar.

Sorry, but the Republican plan -- for decades -- is to get people to vote against their own interests. And they are VERY successful at this.

AFAIK it started with The Southern Strategy -- convicting poor racist white people that their problems are caused by poor Black people, and therefore they vote rich white people into power, who make their lives worse in every possible way -- except they feel good about themselves because they Owned The Blacks.

Of course today Republicans get poor white people to vote against their own interests -- and feel good about themselves -- because they Owned The Libs. Of course this includes union members, even after Trump praised Musk for firing striking union workers. And that is why 60% of the Teamsters voted for Trump, and the International Association of Fire Fighters refused to endorse anyone because their members would have rebelled if they endorsed Harris, etc, etc. See here...

The Democrats’ pro-union strategy has been a bust
https://archive.ph/nd6sE

I don't doubt what you are saying might be the case but if you are a poor person that think that you will be a billionaire then start by voting for policies that benefit fit you as a poor person and if you become a billionaire then you can start voting for policies that benefit billionaires. Since up to this point there have been elections every 2 years.

Voting against your own interests when you are having hardships is so freaking weird to me.
