Apparently these folks forgot about "the 1970s" and "air you can see"
They're so old they don't care about the health of the environment; they'll all be dead in twenty years so it's not their problem. Their problem is the "high price" of vehicles conforming to lower emissions, but uh, I'm pretty sure that's just inflation and reflections of costs from the pandemic.

Or it's just a bunch of salty old men whining they can't buy their pavement princess giant diesel trucks that'll never pull anything.

<sigh> What's next? Mandates that all new cars must be coal-powered by 2027? That by 2032 all cars should be powered by wood-fired stoves fueled by copies of the US constitution? Someone down there in the current administration seen one too many post-apocalyptic movies in the 1980s and misunderstood the messages?

Being old is maybe part of it but these people think Jesus is coming back any day now so may as well just strip mine the planet and get their bag on earth while they're alive, because only the sinners and unbelievers will have to deal with the ruined planet after all the believers get raptured.

What a terrible burden it must have been for those poor, put-upon, tiny little car companies to have to make fuel-efficient vehicles! Why, it must have been exhausting work!

Who could possibly be so vile and villainous as to want cars to be <gulp> fuel-efficient? Nobody wants those any more! I want my car to only get 3 or 4 miles to the gallon! I want to pay through the nose for gas!

... said no sane person, ever.

He wants to make cars less efficient.

This is a guy that's part of the same administration that has created a new (fake) department called the Efficiency department.

Says a lot about what this administration really wants.
A professional friend explained yesterday that he is getting calls asking if his IT consultancy can take a large number of employees, meaning the ones about to get fired due to remote work. Apparently he has already begun negotiating bring people from the US government on board his company, and well outside of just IT workers. Additionally he is negotiating having them work from home because he is telling them he can do this at a reduced price than bringing them on at the office. He laughed that of course he will be doubling their salary rates to take care of benefits and profit.

It was never about efficiency.

Grew up watching commercials with crying Native American and pollution in waterways and skies. Signed up to be member of EPA and be active with Give a Hoot, don't Pollute.
Reality hits that in the commercial, the actor portraying the Native American wasn't. And that politicians allowed laws to create lobbyists and give rights to companies to pollute.
We are being lied to for greed. Your government no longer cares for the welfare of its base. Instead, it sells you ultra-processed food by companies that make it wealthy off your failing health (Cancer can be treated but oh, don't try to cure it...its profit disease!). Same with pollution... but hey, lets convince the public to get Greener with electric cars but then open-mine for its resources or exploit other countries to ruin their generations for your EV tax rebate. Or ban CFCs but then increase the cost of the appliance and make you spend more. All while raising interest rates so you can't afford healthy living and again, eat cheap, ultra-processed foods. Drink that diet coke, eat those sodium-rich meals, wash that orange chemical from your doritos or cheetos finger tips.
Guess that means Trump & Co will welcome Winterkorn to sell TDI vehicles here again, and promote AAPEX and SEMA to allow mods to diesels and ICE motors to get "more power and efficiency" exhaust!

In a further attack on clean air and climate change mitigation, the acting administrator of the General Services Administration issued a memo late last week that barred the federal government from purchasing any zero-emissions vehicles.

I don’t get that. Just straight up no electric vehicles no matter the circumstance? Does that include stuff like the post office? That just doesn‘t make sense

Duffy is only 53.
The life expectancy of a US male is ~77 years, so he's only ~24 years away.

It makes complete sense, given that this administration is dedicated to maximizing the use of fossil fuels. Drill baby drill.

I feel like reports of the current moment in history should be etched into some kind of tablet, and put somewhere for future generations to find, so that they will be able to know why a great civilization in their past was swept into the sea, and why they now eke out a living in a dust bowl.

This place is not a place of honor...

I don't think The Second Coming has anything to do with this. If these people actually adhered to any of the non-evil tenets of Christianity, they wouldn't behave as they do.

No, no, this is purely greed, plain and simple. Any barrier to them making more wealth must be torn down. They don't care about what the planet looks like for their children or (especially) anyone else's children. It's all about how much money they can acquire NOW.

Imagine if you knew that starting January 1st, 2026 all resources and products created, extracted, or otherwise obtained would be divided equally amongst all humans on the planet. You could acquire - at most - one eight-billionth of everything produced, be it food, minerals, lumber, or software. You'd have the urge to make sure that you spent the months leading up to that accumulating as much stuff as you possibly could, so you could continue on in comfort/luxury.

Well, that's how these guys feel all the time about anything that might possibly help anyone. Existential fear that they are going to have less privilige and stuff than they do now.

It doesn't matter to them the example of Bejing having to do extraordinary things to host the Olympics because of polution. That's fine, because they - individually - will be enjoying their private island resorts and mega-yachts. The voting populace is just a resource to be mined, and you get to live in the smog. They'd reintroduce leaded gas if it would let them make more money, even if your kids' IQs will drop because of it.

TLDR: this is greed, not faith.

Doesn't matter if Duffy is 53 or not. They keep pulling stunts like this, removing environmental protections and increasing the pollution they'll be lucky to make it another 20 years.

You mistake forgetting with not caring. They remember the 1970s as a great time where you could get away with anything and opt-out of any consequences by making a shit load of money. I mean, the latter part never really changed, but the regulations got a bit too onerous.
