The letter argued that "Democrats and leftwing activist groups have repeatedly worked to weaponize" the government against free speech and that the FCC should "help guard against future abuses by Democrats and leftwing organizations by streamlining license renewals and merger reviews and eliminating the news distortion and news hoax rules."

What if we're the bad guys? No, it's the children Democrats that are wrong!

I assume they don't actually believe what they're saying there, but if they do it's some impressive cognitive dissonance.

In the UK, the BBC is required to be impartial, as such it's really one of the few trusted news sources here. Enforcing impartiality isn't necessarily bad.

Though in this climate it does seem that this is being politically motivated, so rather than ensuring impartiality, it'll have the exact opposite effect.

The USA is way too polarised at the moment for this work. Even if it was being done in good faith, nobody would agree.
Being impartial is not the same as being neutral.
If one side only produces idiotic actions and statements, while the other side behaves rationally and makes decent statements, even an impatial reporting of the facts will not result neutral news coverage or "balanced reporting" as they like to call it.
Simply because the facts, idiotic vs. rational behavior, are not balanced.

This is simply an attempt to censor away news they don't like while giving the task a different name.

We contacted Carr and will update this article if we get a response. But Carr confirmed to another news organization recently that he doesn't expect a quick resolution. He told Reuters on March 25 that "we're not close in my view to the position of dismissing that complaint at this point."

He can't drop the case. He's been directed from the Oval Office, and as recent dismissals have shown, the Admin is willing to fire people who are not loyal to DJT first and foremost. Loyalty to the US Constitution is not what it takes to keep your job.,

How is this not Treason? How is the recent administration not Terrorists to the public? I don't see any upholding the rule of law, let alone the Constitution. And to imprison, without due process, immigrants on "Trumped" up charges? I this MY Country? Those that elected these clowns, need the pain of the markets, and "Tariffs".

Golfing while millions lose pension funds, 401K, saving and jobs.

So explain to me why Fox News hasn’t been shutdown for the 24/7 stream of lies that it produces? Or what about the Sinclair agenda on their local affiliates all over the country, if we’re talking specifically about traditional broadcast entities? Oh right, it’s because of the first amendment, which Carr and the free speech gestapo seem to be pretending isn’t a thing when it comes to broadcasters telling the truth about the rampant corruption and ineptitude of this administration.

Seriously, the networks need to be telling Carr to fuck off with this nonsense because it’s a textbook violation of their 1A rights that would likely only have SCOTUS support from the ultra-corrupt Alito and Thomas, who seemingly haven’t met a precedent they aren’t happy to overturn, even when it’s their own.

My understanding: Because they're a cable network, not a broadcaster subject to FCC scrutiny under this authority. He likewise can't "investigate" CNN.

However, a huge fraction (nearly half) of all "local" broadcast news stations are owned by the right-leaning Sinclair Broadcast Group.
A 2019 study in the American Political Science Review found that "stations bought by Sinclair reduce coverage of local politics, increase national coverage and move the ideological tone of coverage in a conservative direction relative to other stations operating in the same market".[3][4] The company has been criticized by journalists and media analysts for requiring its stations to broadcast packaged video segments and its news anchors to read prepared scripts that contain pro-Trump editorial content, including warnings about purported "fake news" in mainstream media, while Donald Trump has tweeted support for watching Sinclair's content over CNN and NBC.[5][6][7][8][9]
I look forward to Chairman Carr investigating them for distorting the politics of broadcast news.

This would be the only silver lining of this whole charade: a future administration investigating the hundreds of Sinclair networks under this policy.

However, even then I doubt those investigations would go anywhere. I don't think the current ones will, either, but that's not the point. The point is to scare and intimidate the networks, cost them millions in legal fees defending themselves, and provide fodder for right-wing media outlets for non-stop, breathless segments on "left-wing corruption and bias."

Alito and Thomas will apply the principle of "I Have Power and You Do Not", a time-honored Conservative principle that also drives this policy.

I still encounter people who believe that Muslims, “woke cancel-culture”, trans children, and immigrants are the most dangerous things America faces.

This was always a lie.
Look around, swing voters. Look at your stock market and your government. Look at Bezos, Musk, and Zuckerberg. Look at the unmarked vans spiriting away college students. Look at the book bans and the threats directed at law firms.

Ask yourself again: what is the greatest threat to America?

There is a flip side of this. News used to have to report factual information, give notice of retraction when making a mistake, and pay fines when making egregious mistakes. News had segments that were explicitly called Opinion Editorials or OpEds when the news team editorial staff felt like they must speak out with an opinion about a topic of concern. The Reagan administration put an end to this type of FCC control of the news.

The next time the Democrats are in office they should return to a time when news was required to be researched and factual and if they were not, fined until they failed. It would also help clean up the noxious and toxic stew of lies that is most of social media.

If only he was being honest. The goal is solely to intimidate news organizations who say things conservatives don’t like.
They are NOT conservatives. Conservatives believe in the rule of law, in personal freedoms. The GOP has moved beyond that.

This is a brave new world.

This is just another part of Emperor Trumps plan. Control the media.

The one you should really be focussed on is his statement from the campaign trail that a vote for Trump meant never having to vote again. This, like his campaign statements on tariffs has to be taken at face value.

America is lost. There will be no more elections - it will be a Trump on the throne forever.

This belies the last 30+ years of Republican behavior, but I do love a good “no true conservative” argument.

Just yesterday overheard two people talking at the park about how the markets were all down after the announcement of the tarrifs. Then one of them said "well he [Trump] is just doing what's best for America". His supporters have total blind faith in everything he says and does.
