Probably has to do with spatial awareness and mental capability to have that model in your head. The modern all-around cameras and backup cameras can help a lot, but still might have people missing the intuitive sense of where/how to position and turn the wheel/have clearance and need to keep adjusting.
You're taught to back in unless you have to load/unload the boot on this side of the Atlantic. It's simply safer for pedestrians and other traffic. Rear cross-traffic warnings still aren't a mandatory utility. It's not about what's easier, it's what's safer. And I find it a wash on ease. I probably dislike backing out more, just because of how you have to creep to do it safely. Whereas if you align yourself correctly, backing in is a quick move.

Is your auto insurance company large enough to be included in your bank's electronic billpay database? If so, I'd use bank billpay as your payment method as I assume they can't stall an electronic payment.
My utility company used to be in my banks billpay database but stopped being in it a couple months ago. Today, we got a letter from them saying they are stopping accepting ACH transfers and we must either sign up on their website and pay via credit(including allowing PayPal) or mail a paper check.

I don't understand why a company would make it harder to pay them?

So how are everyone’s gas prices doing? Here on Crete, for the last year and a half, gas has bounced between about 1.72 and 1.85 euros per liter ($9.05-$9.73 per gallon), but over the past couple of weeks, it’s spiked up to about 2.10 euros per liter ($11.05/gallon), with a big jump in just the last day or two! Given the…situation…around Iran, I imagine it’s only going to get worse. It’s a good thing our cars are pretty fuel-efficient!

My mile annoyance. I've become one of the old geezers that tells work "war" stories. That annoys me.

All the new hire’s are younger than I am. And we have a boatload of greensuiters so fresh the squeak when they turn.
Every time one of them comments about what life is like for them as a freshly minted greensuiter, I have to realize my relevant/similar experience to theirs was 25 years ago.

And I’m rapidly approaching the 15 year mark in one workplace. Which is astounding to me.

“This was a busy day…” one of them will start.
“This was nothing, sir. You should have seen….” <- me.

We need that guy from the commercial who tries to keep people from turning into their parents, except for work.

Eh... That's what the NCOs are for. Let them handle the gentle rearing of nascent butter bars...

Are you sitting down, or at least holding on to something?

..... I'll wait...

What NCO's? The one's that aren't assigned to....

Gone from £1.32/L to £1.48/L. Which really isn't so bad considering conditions. It's been higher.

Based on some of the posts here, I think we need a War Stories thread. :)

The local stations have jumped from around 20kr/l for both petrol and diesel to 24 for petrol and 26 for diesel.

I was recently reminded that I ran a vague planning exercise on living and commuting costs in Norway some time in 2018 or so and my pessimistic worst-case calculcations were based on diesel at 15kr/l (at the time, we could usually expect to fill up at 12 or so).

Ah. Naturally. sigh They're too valuable with the grunts I guess...
I’m dealing with <counts on fingers> 9 O1’S or so and more than that in junior enlisted. It’s maddening at times. Glad I work nights and that I’m a grumpy civilian; I only see ‘em at turnover.

O1? That's a....Second Lieutenant if I got that right? And you're a grizzled civilian aux dealing with kids so fresh they're the color of their shoulders-damp uniform? So, on one hand I'm guessing it gets to be “Don’t touch that, you don’t know where it’s been!” and not “Don’t touch that, you don’t know where it’s been, sir!” but on the other hand you can't go full R. Lee Emery on them either despite I imagine you wanting to every so often?

I am <THIS> close to laying down a square on the floor made out of tape that is out of arm reach of anything important and telling ‘em it’s the naughty square, for LT’s that don’t learn.

Oh, lord and lady, Dia, please forgive me, but I couldn't get this out of my head when you talked about the Showcase Square and I got to wondering how someone higher in the command chain might get to do it:

"What did I just walk into? I've been on my shift for ten seconds - if that - and I find this equipment has been treated like it's part of this government's souvenir stand! Do you have authorization to touch that? No? Then explain this miracle to me, as to why your fingerprints are decorating something you are not cleared to touch? Just what were planning to do with that equipment, recruit? Were you planning to adopt it? Give it a name? Take it home and read it a bedtime story about responsibility, maybe? One where the two of you could learn together since you clearly have yet to learn the concept yourself?

Do not answer! I can already see the gears turning in your head and I am concerned for their safety!

In this binder here there are instructions - a protocol, if you will - to prevent this very thing from happening and here you stand, a living demonstration that paper alone is not enough to stop someone from saying to themselves "Yes. Today...today is the day I will place my hands exactly where they do not belong!" That was your time to shine. And this is mine!

I want you to imagine that everything here is labelled with a simple instruction: "Do not touch unless authorized." Now, when I say "authorized" that does not mean I am issuing a challenge! I am not gift-wrapping a puzzle to be solved! I am not inviting interpretation! This is not one of your phone games where the CO gets eaten by a snake if this equipment goes unpawed! I am telling you as clearly as I can that if this equipment had feelings, it would at this moment be lodging a complaint for harassment! You are not here to explore! You are not here to examine! You are here to follow orders so precisely that even your shadow will wait for permission to move!

From this day forward, when you feel the urge to let your hands wander across things where hands were not meant to wander, you will perform the following actions. You will stop! You will stand still! You will do nothing! And then you will ask yourself, "Has anyone in a position of authority given me permission to touch what I am about to touch?" And if the answer is "No", then you will fight that urge like it just insulted your momma. Do I make myself clear?

And if I catch you doing so again, then you will do a tour as exhibit on the Object Lesson Display square in the hopes that others may learn from your inability to do so!"

Agree, especially if it involves personnel safety. Of course given the front page article about the NRC and what's happening to safety, it seems safety is becoming a 4-letter word.

If it's the soap dispenser, yeah, no.

I'm sorry. I didn't mean anything by it, it was just a fun scenario I had in my head.
Hey now, minions need rules too. Hard to take over the world if they're constantly bungling the simple tasks you ask of them :eng101:

I swear half of the villain plots are simply thwarted because their employees dropped the ball*

*Or they spoke too long before dropping the hammer, so keep your speeches short and sweet - think action hero catch phrase, rather than Tony worthy monologue

I'm annoyed at myself, today. Hey, @Diabolical? I'm sorry for my Full Metal Jacket post yesterday. I sometimes get these ideas that amuse me in the context of whatever I happen to be thinking at the time, and I tend to forget to look at them as to how someone who isn't me might read it as is. So...sorry, hey?

Two this morning.

One, I am increasingly working with, or exposed to, people with 'Cybersecurity' in their title who, by their own explicit or implicit admission, aren't 'technical'. They're also nearly always incapable of putting 1 and 1 together and arriving at 2 - their maths always results in 3.49 or something else out of whack. As a result, non-events get blown out into high-priority incidents and what should be a simple investigation involving one or two people ties up more than half a dozen people for an entire afternoon.

Two, I don't know what was going on this morning but what seemed like an endless procession of campers, caravans, RVs and 4x4s came through this town of 3000 souls, right at school drop-off time, choking out one of the main intersections for a decent amount of time.

How can you just leave me standing
Alone on a street that's so cold? (So cold)
Maybe I'm just too demanding
Maybe I'm just like my father, too bold
Maybe you're just like my mother
She's never satisfied (she's never satisfied)
Maybe it's like when my car it backs up
This is what it sounds like

LOL, off topic CSB ahead. Long long time ago I wrote 8086 assembly code. I found a chunk of code that did The Right Thing 99% of the time, except for a specific input. Rather than fix the bug the developer looked for that specific input and just gave the right answer. Keep in mind this was a page or two of assembly code, and he (we were all he back then) didn't document why he was effectively looking for 3 and 5 and returning 8 when found.

Took me something like 10 minutes to find and fix the bug.

Watching a trailer for the upcoming Outcome 2026 and I was like... 'This seems to have WAY more footage than the official trailer.'

Ends up it was an AI slop channel that took the original trailer, and inserted scenes from other Keanu Reeves films to make it a 'true fan made trailer'. Yup, channel blocked, view removed.

Unless the trailer is published by the studio? I won't bother clicking. It's been fan made shit all the way down even before the advent of full blown sloppification for trailers.

Yeah, in this case I accidentally missed that it was not an official trailer. I had seen the teaser awhile back, and figured channels were just sharing a new official trailer.

I was going to post this in the TTPMO thread, but after the last couple of posts there, this would seem a bit minor.

5 lane interstate this morning at 5:15am, 5 cars abreast doing the same speed for at least 5 miles. Given state law says you have 1.5 miles to pass someone in the slower lane - I was a bit irritated, especially since they were all going 65 in a 70.

At lunch, 3 lane interstate - fast lane doing 48 in a 65.

I didn’t realize that I was only a guest on public roads and I needed to defer to everyone else’s preferences.

Your bank's billpay provider will still send them a physical check if they won't accept ACH. At least, that's how I've always seen it from working for credit unions and being a member who uses billpay.

I did that with my last car loan. The loan was through a wee small bank that had an unusually low interest rate, and wasn't set up for online payments. I don't remember who told me about the automatic paper check thing but it was a snap to set up and never failed. They sent a reminder that the check would go early when a bank holiday affected the set payment date, even. Highly recommend.
