The Asahi Linux team is already working on that with a mostly working preliminary version for M1 and M2 at this point, even with a little bit of sporadic but very much unofficial support by Apple.
Apple could either step up this support for them or they could expand legacy support for Macs farther than we can expect at this point: Looking at iOS legacy support it looks like A14/M1 support may end after iOS27/macOS27 unless Apple extends it further, maybe in response to sustainability regulations which are being discussed...
Yeah, but that's almost nothing, no offense to the work they're doing, which is greatly appreciated.
If Apple actually gave back to the kernel, that's a different story. They have the money and people.
Honestly this is leaving money in the table for them, if they did support Linux on those CPUs officially, I would buy an Apple laptop yesterday and still keep their services on setup boxes/devices. They already support AppleTV+ and most of their subscription services on the web anyways.
