I dunno... Even with a strong opening, given how Morbius and Madame Web turned out, I think I'll wait for reviews of the full film before deciding if I'm going to waste money on this.
IMO this is part of the problem with box offices / movies lately.

People would rather wait for other people to make opinions on movies and just pick the one that suits them I.e people say it will suck, read reviews that confirms this and now they say the movies sucks; without seeing the movie.

I'd rather waste the 8 dollars and form my own opinion of something.

That said, I will not watch this 8 minute spoiler as I think trailers are already too long.

It's what I've always seen as the James Bond problem. "This is the best spy in the world..." who always gets discovered and caught immediately. Sure, he can then fight his way out every time, but that's just being a good soldier/killer, not a great spy.
Well, that's just it. James Bond isn't a spy. He's a secret agent. Being a spy is boring and typically involves years of being boring so they can get ahold of information and get it back to their controllers. Once the spies have sent the information back and then need to be gotten out of wherever they are stuck in, or somebody needs to act on the information they sent, then in goes a Secret Agent. Those would be special forces types that work well by themselves. They go in to get a job done, not to spy.

Also, the reason he's so good is he gets the job done. There are a lot of times he doesn't get captured right away, and the villain only catches on to what he's doing late in the game, so to speak, but even if he gets caught, he still manages to get out and fix the problem.

And, actually, technically he's an assassin. Hence Licence to Kill. They send him in, usually, to kill someone, be that an enemy agent, a crime boss, or just someone that MI6 have decided needs killing. Sometimes, he does other things as well, but they don't send him in if they don't expect some people to wind up dead.

And, hey. I'm not defending James Bond, or Ian Fleming. Bond is a borderline psychopath, drug addicted, alcoholic, misogynistic killer. And Fleming wasn't much better. But there are some fun films, and a few good books, but an awful lot of slightly off-putting and/or downright creepy behaviour in them.

As a sidenote, the one that really annoys me in how they're misunderstood, especially by the people who did that movie, is Maxwell Smart. In the world of the TV show, Smart is the best Secret Agent in the world. He's an idiot, certainly, but the one thing he is good at is being a secret agent. That's why they keep sending him on the important missions. You could make an argument that 99 is a better agent, but Max is still near the top.

Of course, the world of the TV show is absurd in itself. It's a comedy. Then again, the world of Bond is kind of absurd, just not in the same way.

I have to admit, I had no idea Secret Agent was different from being a spy.

I read that in the tone of "Pretty Fly (for a White Guy)."

And now I am embarrassed for having referenced, and thusly revealing my knowledge of, terrible 90s pop rock.

Every few years there's a "terrible 90's pop rock is making a comeback" story. One of these days it will come true and we will be momentarily cool again... maybe even for the duration of an entire TikTok clip.

Coincidentally, idk if ars has covered it saw this promo for the movie Y2K today (presumably tech & late 90's related... though the video gives no hints other than "very late 90's")

Don't use my comment to try to prove whatever point you're trying to make.

I go to plenty of movies without having any insight into it ahead of time. I go to movies based on things like "this title sounds interesting" or "this is starting right now and I've got free time" or "I've seen [actor/director/composer/bit-player]'s stuff before; let's see how this one is".

The vast majority of the time, I won't choose to not see something based solely on reviews; I'll decide for myself if the experience was worthwhile or not. Sometimes that means I see bad films, and sometimes that also means I also enjoy a "bad" movie, or suffer through a "good" movie.

However: Sony's little misadventures with live-action non-Spider-Man films set in that universe have lost the benefit of the doubt for me, and I am a big fan of Spider-Man and many of the associated characters. They're simply not good films as far as I've seen. So I'll wait to hear what kind of consensus it gets before I decide if I want to lay down some of my cash to see it.

Actually in general Intelligence parlance Bond is not an agent

’Intelligence agency employees who work in the field do not call themselves agents; an agent is someone hired or recruited by an intelligence agency to do its bidding. The person to whom the agent reports—the actual agency employee—is known as an operative.’

not totally up on the full minutia of Bond lore but pretty sure he doesn’t work freelance
