Since it's missing in the article: it's actually thinner, less wide, and taller than the Galaxy Note.
Note 1: 83 x 146.9 x 9.7 mm, 178 g
Note 2: 80.5 x 151.1 x 9.4 mm, 180 g

I'll pass. I don't think the screen size difference will be noticeable, and would prefer to keep the 102,400 pixels that the Note 2 loses. Maybe that 2.4 mm width change will allow it to fit in all my side-of-leg pockets, though, which my Note doesn't do...

Overall this is a 'meh' for a phone that I was previously really excited about.

On the plus side:
- very nice battery @ 3,100 Mah
- quad core processor is a plus
- kudos for shipping with Jellybean
- that grey version looks sharp

On the minus side:
- resolution going down even though th screen size went up
- US version might miss out on the quad-core love again
- still a pentile display
- touch wiz

There are rumors HTC is coming out with a 5" 1920x1080 phone. That could be a lot more appealing if the processor and battery are up to snuff. Ill also keep my eyes open for the iPhone 5 release now.

Samsung could have had a home run with a 1080p display, a slightly larger battery, guaranteed quad-core for the US, and going to SAMOLED+ or IPS for the screen. Oh well, now the competition gets a turn to make the perfect phone.

Edit: DYAC

Oh yeah, thanks NulloModo, that was the other reason I'll keep my Note over the Note 2. PenTile just gets worse the bigger it gets (without resolution increase). So I'm guessing the Note 2 has a significantly more obvious PenTile squiggles. Even 1280x800 SAMOLED+ would have been a welcome improvement.

I'm not surprised they didn't increase the resolution, when they missed that on the 10.1" Note as well. Samsung is obviously playing the DPI game a little too slowly.

Hmm. This thing, a second SIM with the same number to put in the e-ink Motorola F3 that is gathering dust on a shelf here and that I could use then to actually make phone calls with and to take with me when I need nothing but a phone in my pocket... might make a great team.

By the way, I think Samsung has done something entirely original with the deeply rounded corners here and especially in the S3. I didn't like the look at all at first sight (and I still think it looks somewhat ugly), but it certainly helps a lot to make the thing less of a nuisance in tight pockets.

This looks very nice... butI am sort of allergic to OLEDs after almost a year of using a galaxy S2. Pentile makes it worse, ofcourse.

But the colour accuracy and contrast issues in even Samsung's best Super AMOLED Plus (no pentile), and noticeable burn-in (CRT style) after less than a year mean I am permanently OFF OLEDs.

And the thing has trouble rendering a decent white. And I adjusted ir for white and set it to "Movie Mode" and everything when I got it... but now besides the notceable burn-in patterns I can also see a subtle degradation of white levels again. Also... Movie Mode improved but did not fix the colour and quantization issues. Even third party apps like Screen Adjustor can't fix it.

I think the HTC One X screen and the iPad-3 screen are my ideal.

OLED was overhyped and just not ready.

You can use it to break into cars instead of using that thin crowbar thing.

This kind of thing is the most damning evidence against Samsung aping apple.
Unfortunately unlike the sgs3 relative to its predecessor, and this is arguably a downgrade from the original note.
It really really didn't take long for Samsung's success to make them lazy, and that lack of a tendency to laziness is Apple's real strength.
BTW, I'm not an apple fan, but just a disappointed consumer.

How did you arrive at that conclusion? It has entirely different dimension and use case than iPhone.

'Evidence against aping' means that this is proof they didn't copy. I think you both agree on that.

Must have misread it. The context of the entire post just sounded like the tuxRoller was thinking Note was a copy of something from Apple.

According to Ars there are two countries in the world: US and International.

Ars is US based and is therefore going to be US centric. International events that could have repercussions in the US or that provide insight into matters concerning the US obviously also get coverage. If you're looking for detailed coverage of device availability in another country your best bet would be to check a site based on and dedicated to covering technology issues in that country.

Ah, I wasn't clear, I suppose. By aping I meant that Apple decided to take the year off by releasing the marginally different (according to fans, and though I think adding another core and a much faster gpu is an nice upgrade) devices from the previous year and Samsung seemed to follow suit.

No, you're both right:)
My sentence was worded ambiguously. I also wasn't being completely serious. Apple fans seemed to think the previous iphone should've been a more serious update. Similarly Samsung did, and imho, a rather half hearted update of its line this year. The note is an especially good, or rather bad, example of this.

SoC? Please explain your acronyms, Ars - even regular readers don't know all of the ones you seem to toss out.
It's a pretty standard acronym in the phone world (about as common as CPU for processor). Next time it'll be faster to highlight SoC, do 'google search' on it, and the answer is in the third result: System on a Chip. Since the term is probably no more helpful than the acronym, you could then click on the wiki article and read all about it.

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but most phones seem to be switching to a 16:9 aspect ratio. First the Note II, then the rumored display of the iPhone 5.

Any specific reason behind this sudden change?

Maybe they think it feels better in hand? I have no idea.

Personally, it's not a change I like.

I don't really want a tablet that's 16:9 either.

I damn sure don't want a monitor that's 16:9!

I'm aware of the concept of System on a Chip, but wasn't aware of the acronym. I am also aware that any decent education teaches you to spell it out in full the first time you use it - even when only your professor is going to be reading your paper. Not doing so is just lazy.
