Russia seems to have lost contact with its first lunar probe in half a century

Yeah! Woo! Perfect!

Another successful Russian moon mission XD

Good to see the Orcs continuing to fail. Good to see the Kremlin continue to fail. Maybe some of the vatniks will start realizing their view of Russia is a lie. That Putin has destroyed them. They STILL can't put anything on the moon reliably!

No one cares about the whataboutisms vatniks. The FACT is that the nation's Russia claims are "primitive" are the ones routinely putting landers and even SUVs on other planets entirely. Russia has the best track record for making new craters. The FACTS are against your view of the world. The FACT is that this war has been a total vindication of the US weapon stockpiles and "paranoia". When the US starts wanting to invade Mexico or Canada because "its our right" I'll start worrying.

Besides. There is a near infinite list of reasons the Kremlin and its supporters (still 70%+ of the population, so zero sympathy) deserve far more ire than any other nation on the planet. At least Xi believes in a future even if he's genocidal. Russia thinks the entire world should be destroyed if they can't control it.

Down with the Kremlin. Slava Ukraini!

We're a few pages in, so maybe it needs to be said again: Friendly reminder that Roscosmos is actively recruiting for the Ukrainian invasion, and Cosmonauts proudly unfurled the flag of the occupation government in the Donbas when they flew a crew up to the ISS. Russia is committing a genocidal war and their space program is absolutely a part of that conflict.

Even two years ago, NASA would likely have been working feverishly to help them reestablish contact. Sad that the Russian government put us in a place where even basic space cooperation is hard again.
Not sad at all and decades overdue because cooperation was a desperately naive mistake by socially clueless humans however technically skilled.

The idea science can live in some magical bell jar isolated from external reality is cute but no one should believe it however much they may want things to be otherwise. Wanting what cannot be therefore should not be attempted because to do so creates vulns where none existed is contemptible. Depending on the enemy for scientific cooperation is like buying their petroleum and natural gas. They win, you lose, end of story so never do it, never want to do it and scourge anyone advocating doing it because that sort of mistake should not be permitted.

Russia is an enemy society, not a society that accidentally produced one ephemeral enemy administration. Those doubting this may examine eastern European history from Finland south. Russian leadership are products of the culture that elevates them while obliterating its intelligentsia by bullet, gulag, exile and Novichok. Russian leadership haven't killed or raped anyone in Ukraine (so far as we know there are no current Berias). That is the work of the Russian people who compose their armed forces.

All Russian space tech enhances their armed forces so Russian failures are in the interest of civilization and the more resources Putin squanders on nostalgic vanity projects the better. Every ruble wasted on their space program is unavailable for genocide of Ukraine, internal suppression and external subversion and proxy wars like support of the delightful Assad regime in Damascus or Wagner and other operations in Africa.

Every enemy aerospace program failure is good news. To contend otherwise is support for genocide because they are of a piece. The purpose of the moon shot is Putinist prestige. May every such attempt (including manned missions which contain enemy military personnel) fail in the most mediagenic and costly manner.

One more piece of evidence we never had manned missions past the van Allen belt, noone would survive this, and the whole moon landings were done with Kubrick on a filmset ...
The truth at last! Nobody can "land" on the moon because we only see the bottom of it, the top of its flat disc being permanently attached to the solid crystal firmament above that rotates around the sky!

That figure for heat of fusion is too low by more than a factor of 1000.

The heat of vaporization of Al is 293.4 kJ/mol, or 10.8 MJ/kg.
I happened to grab this link as the first one I found. Others do suggest it's closer to 5x the specific kinetic energy.
So no vaporization. The aluminum is still going to turn to liquid and be atomized over hundreds of meters.

Edit: newp, I just misread the table at the bottom wrong. So that's on me. But liquid aluminum is all I was expecting regardless.

And you'd be wrong - the Moon is clearly a hologram, as dictated by the basic laws of optical perspective.
Why and how, you'd ask? Don't. :)

One more piece of evidence
we never had manned missions past the van Allen belt, noone would survive this, and the whole moon landings were done with Kubrick on a filmset, 2 germans carried the lies, von Braun the chief rocket scientist and Kurt Debus he was first director of Nasa/Kennedy Space Center(until 1974), both germans from Peenemünde rocket test center, both were in the Waffen SS.
And you believe still in manned moon missions?

Careful there with uncovering "The Truth", Kathi!

Ars already knows you are from Deutschland, you having helpfully provided that info yourself in your profile.

If you continue to post more posts uncovering the global conspiracy, Ars will use the signalling laser on their orbital HQ to inform their assigned contact in BMI's KBSt, who will promptly read all your posts and alert the Abteilung IS of the Bundesministerium des Innern.

Next you know, there is a black helicopter silently hovering in your backyard and GSG 9 stormtroopers cuff you and take you into a secret rectal probing and interrogation facility in the top‑secret underground green oasis on Spitzbergen (what did you really think the Svalbard Global Seed Vault really was, you dummy? Storage for plant seeds? lol).

Maybe you think that as possibly a Reichsbürger sovereign citizen, government black helicopters have no jurisdiction over you. Well, the lizard people behind it all certainly do! And they will gladly probe prove that to you over and over.

Take that as a friendly advice.

You don't really want to go there, and don't ask me how I kno...#$%#$%#$%!@#... dddzzzzwwww... INITIALISING... ERROR 0x666 – ALEPH‑LEVEL SECRET INFORMATION BREACH DETECTED... If only God would transport all the privately owned guns in the US (stopping the gop/trump slow moving right wing insurrection and general criminality) to the average Russian citizens (enabling their vastly justified overthrow of putin and his oligarchs). Think how much BETTER the world would be.
I don’t think arming a bunch of fuckwit orcs would do any good…

it was never supposed to be isolated from geopolitics, just the opposite really, the purpose of cooperation was to try and exert soft power influence through the process, first to keep their engineers employed to keep them from going to rogue states (indications that Russia has helped NK with their missile program should tell you that's no longer working out) and second to help convince them that the current rules based world order can be beneficial to them...

unfortunately that's not working out

Headline in Pravda: "Russia makes largest man-made lunar crater!"

In the story they'll talk about how they wanted to leave a mark on the moon that will last for millions of years to prove Russian superiority over the other nations and this was the intention all along.

Never underestimate the ability to spin disaster into "this is fine".

If you said "Nobody can go past the Van Allen Belts because the radiation exposure would be X", I could check your claim against the data collected on the actual radiation environment in and beyond the belts.

But you said "Nobody can get past the Van Allen Belts because nazis". I don't have to do any checking at all to reject your claim because you've provided nothing to back it up and instead played the Nazi card.

Stop playing the nazi card. Learn how to make an argument.

And learn how to source and evaluate data whilst you're at it, for your own safety if nothing else. If you keep it up with the conspiracy theory BS you'll eventually land in an ER with a crash team working in a probably vain attempt to save your life because you thought replacing all your blood with horse medicine would make you immune to covid or something.

Danke – loved learning your Dünnschiss (?) euphemism, which I didn't know myself – shows that German can be a very inventive and highly poetic language, contrary to the stereotypical view of it ;‑)

Back in 1959, the Soviets racked up another win in the Space Race on September 13th when their Luna 2 impactor probe became the first spacecraft to reach the Moon (or any celestial body, period).

If they'd just waited a few more weeks, I guess they could've chalked up this lithobraking incident as a tribute?

Keep failing Roscosmos. We love to see it!

"Russia" does not cover the whole former Soviet territory. "Russia" only makes up about 15% of the former Soviet territory. So ... do they have the ability in Siberia to talk to items on the moon?
Using Wikipedia numbers ...
Soviet Union = 22.4E6 km²
Russia = 17.1E6 km²

17.1/22.4 = 76.3%
