Is there a (possibly long German) word where the outcome doesn't matter, because there's so much trauma, and the loop closes so far down the pike, that the damage still occurs, even though they're not ultimately successful?

Because these guys are outstanding at manufacturing trauma.

Pyrrhic victory? Even if you win, you still lose.
If we are victorious in one more battle with the Romans, we shall be utterly ruined.

We'll spend decades trying. Some of it simply can't be fixed.
Hopefully we'll spend decades trying. I'm not seeing enough evidence of course correction to believe that this bus is turning away from the headlong rush off a cliff.

Not entirely on topic... yet, it needs to be seen.

I prefer the term "Trumpian Victory". We're so far beyond "Pyrrhic" that we need a new word.
We need to expunge the word 'Trump' from history after he's dead. Every object and building with his name on needs to be reduced to ash.
Honestly, it sounds melodramatic but it's the only thing in the world that matters to him and it needs to go away forever.

From the US Senate Page: “No Democrats voted to confirm Robert F. Kennedy Jr. for Secretary of Health and Human Services. The confirmation vote, which took place in the Senate on February 13, 2025, fell strictly along party lines, with all 48 members of the Democratic caucus voting against his nomination.”

Remember this when voting, the GOP places party over Country.

I sure understand your sentiment, and I too would like to hit rewind and erase on this part of history...

But... We must try to remember history, lest we repeat the mistakes.

Without regard to preserving history, there would be no holocaust museum, no Hiroshima memorial, no Enola Gay in the Smithsonian...etc.

... No Jackie Robinson statue. And no Robert E Lee statue. Sure, Lee isn't currently a majority favorite. But don't tear down the statue, put a sign on it explaining the situation.

One lesson from recorded human history is that there's no empire that doesn't eventually collapse. Typically it doesn't happen in a single catastrophic event, but rather over decades or even centuries; the collapse becomes most obvious in retrospect, but people living through it notice the demise of state functions and abandonment of infrastructure, and when possible they adapt and keep going about their lives. When that's not possible... Well, they move somewhere else, or they die.

Another lesson from history is that no collapse is forever. (So far, at least.) Something new has always risen from the ashes. But as to whether the rebuilding takes 10 years, or a hundred, or three hundred... That always seems to depend on circumstances. And boy, do we have some circumstances right now.

You're right about museums but I don't agree that we need to keep statues and monuments.

Tear them all down. If you want to keep statues put them in a museum's "Hall of Bastards" but don't just leave them up with a plaque. Because people going to visit them won't read it and anyone effected by the person it celebrates will have to relive that every time they see it.

Trump can have a history book, but leaving his Trump branded products and buildings out in the wild as proof of his success are just not it. Especially considering the American Right's obsession with idolatry and symbolism.

Racists aren't reading the sign that says Bobby lee was just misunderstood and just reallllly loved Virginia.
Tear that crap down, melt it and bury deep.

Some part of me thinks that anti-vaxxers themselves don't want to be on this board. By being a bunch online anti-vaccination kooks, they have all the flexibility of spouting untested and unvetted shit and none of the responsibility. They can talk out of their asses, make money doing so, and have zero worry about this coming back to harm them.

Now they suddenly need to put their money where their mouth is - they're expected to provide some sort of reasoning for their fringe ideas, will be held responsible for them once this clown show wraps up (or maybe in a decade or so), and well.. now they're part of the proverbial problem.

It sucks when you don't have the boogeyman to rally against. About the best you can do is blame previous administrations - and I think Trump is finally starting to hit the limit of the usefulness of that excuse himself.

We'll spend decades undoing or fixing everything this administration did and destroyed.
Hopefully the trials and executions for those who committed open treason (Trump unilaterally declared war and Hegseth committed war crimes, after all) will begin the healing. Undoing the damage will take substantially longer.

Damnatio memoriae. I'm very torn over this, because the greatest possible FU to President Moron is to bury his name, but we also need to never ever forget the stupidity to which Americans can and will descend.

I find myself conflicted. I mean, I absolutely 100% agree about removing any and all traces, especially as the leaving-a-legacy thing is clearly so important.

At the same time - we need to remember what happened. There's an argument he should get a Rushmore or something, if only to make it harder for future generations to forget (and so they've got something to go urinate on)

Anyone who paid any attention to what RFKjr did in Samoa, and still voted to confirm him, deserves to work in medical ward as penance. It wouldn't be enough, but...
I suspect that, if they are that incompetent, all sane people would not want them anywhere near a medical ward. Especially one treating children.

Provided your optimistic assumption that the nation survives the current regime comes to fruition...(I am, sadly, less optimistic) (edit for grammar)

They can't be this stupid, can they?
Inflicting pain is their end goal, so not only destroying the government. Remember when DHS goons were separating children from parents and locking them up in cages. One goon even commented that the crying children were just short of a choir. Sociopathic assholes to the last member. And then there is ICE, openly killing US residents (9 so far). Yes they are THAT stupid, but they are also THAT malicious.

The word "trump" already has preexisting meanings in English. (From the Oxford English Dictionary and others):

Verbs:
  • To give forth a trumpet-like sound, specifically from your back side
  • To deceive, cheat
  • To take

Noun:
  • That sound coming from your back side.
  • A thing of small value

Let's forget any other ones though.
