PlayStation Classic review: A far-from-classic experience

Dedicated memory cards per game? So no quips from Psycho Mantis then? Well that's unfortunate. (Maybe the developers were smart enough to pre-load the MGS save slot w/ some other saves?)

So what's w/ the little hidden port on the reverse side of the console?

[edit]Apparently earlier versions of the console had an I/O port behind the cover. Never knew.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:play ... -Backs.jpg

That still begs the question, why is the cover port there on the Classic? Is there anything behind it, or is it all cosmetic?

Holy crap. I knew they'd done Tekken 3 from the PAL version (from this tweet: https://twitter.com/MarkMan23/status/10 ... 4795429895) but didn't realize they were screwing over nearly half of the entire collection that way.

Let me amend my first sentence: Wholly crap. As in this thing is wholly crap. I'll stick to...anything else, honestly. Even a Raspberry Pi does a better job emulating the PlayStation. Plus you can use dual-analog controllers that way.

I admit it likely was never a particularly good game, but I LOVED Destruction Derby when I was a kid. I wasted many hours playing it and it's sequel. I doubt that it'll be quite as captivating in 2018, especially when things like BeamNG.Drive exist, but I still pre-ordered one of these to play DD (and Intelligent Qube!)

What is with the silly short cords on these mini system controllers? I had to hodgepodge cords together to make my NES mini remotely playable from a comfortable distance.

i got some of those blutooth 8bitdo controllers.

this thing looks awful. that generation of graphics imo aged even worse than the 8 bit stuff of nes/master system. just bad. an n64 classic would fare the same.

Looks like Sony smelled that classic console money, but didn't put forth any effort to get it.

What's sad is they didn't need to put in any real effort. If they'd just stuffed a PlayStation TV in a retro shell and preloaded it with a bunch of games, it would have been an excellent system -- and could have improved on the Nintendo model by allowing additional games to be purchased. Instead we have...this.

I feel like there are plenty of N64 games that will fare better than a lot of these games. Mainly just the art style. They were not going for hyper realistic graphics but a more cartoon style. That alone will save it from aging it as fast.

Agreed, the PS1 games look pretty rough without filters, the N64 games still look good

Here is my thing. If nostalgia is your thing at least be smart about it. Buy a used/old PS2/PS3, pop in PS1 disc. Done. Or buy used/old Vita, Jailbreak dump all your PS1 roms on it, done. Or buy and used/old PSP, pandorize it, download your PS1 roms, games done.

I was playing FF9 on my PSP before Sony officially released an emulator for that thing. On my Vita I have all legit versions of my favorite PS1 games, those same games work on my PS3. On my PS2 I still have all my PS1 game discs, pop them in and I'm pretty much all set.

I wouldn't be surprised if Sony releases an emulator for the PS4 for PS1 games at some point.

This thing is a waste of time and money, especially if Sony wasn't going to give it the due respect it deserves.

Wow, and to think they only thing I was disappointed in was the game selection. I guess Sony surprised me with not only a bad selection, but bad performance, bad region choice for the games themselves, and bad extra features like even Nintendo has done.

This would have been a pass from me at $50, let alone double.

You can fit the entire history of video games up to the playstation/dreamcast era on a flash drive and Ouya had support for a number of bluetooth controllers
I've had Infrared controllers that respond better and have better range than the Ouya controllers, though.

Personally I'd get a PSP or PS3 if you wanted these games. The PSP will have a nice advantage of a great pixel-density screen that's damn close to the original PS1's resolution, and it looks great.

I never understood the fascination with these garbage "Classic" consoles, when all you need is an Ouya or Raspberry PI

You can fit the entire history of video games up to the playstation/dreamcast era on a flash drive and Ouya had support for a number of bluetooth controllers

It fascinates me how every single "hurr durr just get a Raspberry Pi" idiot completely misses the point.

The ironic thing is that the Raspberry Pi isn’t even a very good machine to emulate with. If you’re going to completely miss the point and roll your own instead, I’d go whole hog and use hardware that can emulate up to at least GameCube and PSP. The Pi chokes on some PS1/N64 games, and there’s no way you could run anything beyond that.

The point is to not waste $100 on hot garbage that's preying on people's nostalgia, when there are better alternatives. Even ignoring the raspberry PI, ouya is a better console right out of the box or as others have said, PS2, PS3, PSP, Vita are also cheaper alternatives and supported by Sony

Yes, Yes let's just focus on Pi and ignore I mentioned Ouya, which has Playstation and Dreamcast emulators and worked quite well

Just throwing out both as examples of better options

Ouya is the same price. Actually, no, it’s not. I’d have to buy a second controller. Actually, no, I’d have to buy two controllers because the out of the box controller is a “piece of hot garbage”.

Frankly, if all that Sony was going for was the nostalgia money, they could have just had an mp3 of the opening PS1 chime and played it on repeat for the same effort. :p

But seriously, the main draw of most of these games at the time was 'top of the line graphics'. It's no longer top of the line graphics, so there really isn't any draw (other than nostalgia) to get them (and is there really enough nostalgia for most of these games? Maybe FFVII, Tekken 3, but most of these aren't even the 'best' in their PS1 series i.e. Coolboarders 2 instead of 3?). Games that you'd get for 'plot' should hold up, but otherwise, as soon as something new comes out, it's no longer 'top of the line'.

And for the price of $100? Here's the breakdown of what I saw from a quick Amazon search*:

PS1 console (the awesome mini one): less than $40
Memory Card: $5

That leaves you with $55 dollars for games. (And you can even splurge and get a backwards compatible slim PS2 for about $20 more. Keeps your options open). With the exception of Jumping Flash being around $35 and a few of the games being around $15 (I'm looking at you FFVII!), you could practically get the entire library above in physical disc mode (but frankly, who would choose THAT library? There are dozens of games I could name for you, for clear under $10, that are miles ahead of this list). And if you're only getting it for 'Final Fantasy VII or Metal Gear Solid', you could actually get both and still come out thirty bucks ahead.

*(Granted, these would be used. Doesn't make it any less effective though)

So in short, probably not going to be getting this, in case that wasn't clear :)

NES classic is smaller than the original...
PS1 classic is smaller than the original...

I'm just waiting for wee Wii.
Hell, I'd get a big kick if they applied that to the handhelds as well.

The Gameboy Micro Micro. Or Gameboy Nano?

Can't help but think of this...

While that's relevant to PS2 discs, PS1 discs run on any PS3, even the latest "Super Slim."

"If a PS2 classic is forthcoming, we can only hope Sony will put a little more effort into both areas."

Or to put any effort into the software instead of using open source software.
Historically, open source emulators have been more accurate and faster than proprietary ones. I would rather them use good open source emulators (with proper attribution) than do a half-assed job writing their own, which is what has usually happened in the past.
