All I want:

(5) Aperture back from the dead

That's it. Not a huge list.

I'd settle for just #5. Photos has improved over the years, but it's still not really good enough. I stick with it due to the convenience and integration, but I wish they just brought Aperture back.

+3 for the return of Aperture.

++ on Aperture.

The other one that baffles me is killing the full-fat HomePod; these are obvious Apple-market products, and while the minis are impressive for their size, why not continue to provide the full size option for people who A) have the money and B) want the sound?

Have a ++ back your-own-self. I have several rooms still crying out for a full-size, full-feature HomePod (or two.)

With my current TV, the CEC functionality apparently gets reset whenever the power goes out. The first time after a power outage, I have to turn the TV on and off manually at least once for the Apple TV to “see” it, and then after that point the Apple TV remote can control it.

This is my experience as well, though I only need turn the TV “on” for the first time after a power outage. The sound bar worked with this setup when I was using one, but I now use a stereo pair of Homepods.

I'm still bothered by the dumbness of AirPods and switching between devices. Apple assumes that you want to use your AirPods with all your devices. No, I do not want to use my AirPods with my AppleTV. I will also never use my AirPods with my MBA. I only use them with my iPhone.
If you only use them with one device turn the auto switch feature off.

Switch your AirPods to another device - Apple Support said:
Turn off automatic switching
If you don't want your AirPods to switch automatically, you can turn off automatic switching on your iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple TV.
On your iPhone or iPad
With your AirPods in your ears and connected to your iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > Bluetooth. Alternatively, you can go to Settings > [your AirPods].
Tap the More Info button next to your AirPods in the list of devices.
Tap Connect to This iPhone [or iPad].
Tap When Last Connected to This iPhone [or iPad].
To turn on this feature again, tap Automatically.

Those lenses are covered in sapphire glass aren't they? They are more likely to scratch other objects than to get scratched themselves. Sapphire is second to only diamond on the Mohs scale.
Sapphire glass is unlikely to scratch but it can shatter. I’d question a lens cover, but not a bump protector in the form of a raised ridge around the camera assembly. Though I don’t believe the latter would impact focus.

Anecdotally, I carry my iPhone in my left front pants pocket. While I generally try to keep that pocket free of “scratchy” objects, and sand/grit/abrasive media, I don’t obsess over it. The case, along with the pockets in my shop pants, show signs of my casual disregard, but I’ve never made a (lasting) mark on a lens cover.

See also the crystal of my SS S3 Watch. The watch never met a door jam/striker plate it wasn’t willing to cuddle up to. Still looks factory fresh.

Though I’m historically not a fan/user, I did get a (Spigen?) glass screen protector for my current 13 Pro. I was curious about their application jig which made the day-one, fresh from box installation, as promised, flawless. In use, the thin glass is effectively invisible and unnoticeable — even when used side-by-side with an unprotected phone.

I’ve replaced that screen protector once. I dropped the phone and it cracked. Of course, I can’t say whether or not the unprotected screen would have been damaged by the impact. Even so, given the lack of negatives and the peace of mind it provides when I reach into my phone pocket and pull out my keys…or a carbide scribe…I’ll likely repeat on my next phone — and my next iPad.

The sapphire lens protectors remain uncovered (and I damaged) though. Maintenance is usually a shirt wipe. Iso or ROR when called for.

Edit add: When I did remove the broken screen protector it left no trace of adhesive behind. I wiped the screen with a good quality optical cloth (mostly for good measure) and installed the replacement. No bubbles. No discoloration. No problem.

This doesn’t work for me anymore. Or at least it’s very random, it feels like it doesn’t work. Have I broken something or has Apple done something horrible to Safari?
Seems to be working as it always has for me. I should qualify that I’m running the latest iOS Beta so it’s possible it’s broken in the latest release — but I hadn’t noticed this to be true.

Notes seems to be indexed and searchable with Spotlight for me (both titles and full text) on Sonoma; not sure which of the options in Spotlight preferences controls it, though. (is it a document? is it other? is it something else?)
Didn't work for me here — but I appreciate the heads up and will continue my investigation.

Edit to add: I have every option for Spotlight Search checked.

Because Apple has been dumbing down their OS for years.
I read this a lot…but I’ve yet to be convinced of the truth of it. It can just as easily be claimed that they’ve been refining it. Same actions, different words.

At any rate, I think the UNIX core is safe for as long as we have Macintosh — but my crystal ball is no more accurate than yours.

Yeah, whenever I send an email to my wife, Apple Mail "helpfully" fills in by default this email address of a woman with the same first name who I only interacted with once, over a decade ago. I can't seem to make it stop.
(Not that you should have to but…) Have you removed the email address of "the other woman" from the Previous Recipients list?

  1. In the Mail app
    fcdf74cf8457ce188a2aaa7cf1293c83.png
on your Mac, choose Window > Previous Recipients.
  2. Find the address you want to delete. You can search for it or sort the list by clicking a column header.
If you want to check the address in the Contacts app, double-click the card icon in front of the address. If a card doesn’t exist yet and you want to keep the address in Contacts, select the address, then click Add to Contacts.
  3. Click Remove From List.

Incredible! I had no idea this existed!
😉 It’s been there for as long as I can remember. Certainly back to my swinging bachelor days. Important to know when you’ve serial-dated three Kathys…and don’t want to accidentially re-connect with the crazy one. Hope it puts this annoyance to bed.

I’m sitting at the breakfast bar, drinking coffee and using the iPad to go through some old photos. I’m looking for hidden gems and competition maybies. Images I overlooked on my first pass. I came across an image deserving of a clever title…and like an animal, unless I want to leave my cozy, caffeinated perch to fetch the Air, I’m forced to record the title as a Caption — because Photos for iOS/iPad OS doesn’t surface the Title field.

Apple, please address this oversight. Give us Photos feature parity between Mac and iOS. Titles. Keywords. Smart collections. (I understand that Aperture Redux is too much to hope for.)

It’s long past time.

Years ago, I had a menu bar app that only served to toggle function keys depending on the foregrounded app. I’m drawing a blank on the name, though.
I tried installing Fluor this morning, but it’s not showing up in my menu bar. Plow knocked down the mailbox so…I didn’t spend very long playing with it.

MacOS-Fn-Toggle
Toggle Mac Function Keys

The toggle action should also be Automatorable, and assigned to a Hot Key — but I haven’t played with it.

I also found a commercial App that claims to do this (and, like Fluor allows the toggle to be assigned based on the current app) but I thought $25 was steep for such a simple ask.

I wouldn’t wear my Watch (or watch) while washing dishes. Soap reduces the surface tension of water and makes it easier for it to creep past seals. (I’d wash my hands with a watch on because, under normal conditions I’m not going to get the wrist area truly wet.)

What should I avoid while wearing my Apple Watch?
Water resistance isn't a permanent condition and can diminish over time. Apple Watch can't be rechecked or resealed for water resistance. The following can affect the water resistance of your Apple Watch and should be avoided:
Dropping Apple Watch or subjecting it to other impacts
Exposing Apple Watch to soap or soapy water (for example, while showering or bathing)

As for dishwashers: I never wash cast iron period — unless I am going to re-season it anyway, in which case yes, I use the dishwasher. I gave up on “fancy” chef knives. With the exception of the AG Russel folding chefs knife I use for travel, I use the white plastic handled “commercial” knives from Sam’s club. I keep them razor sharp, but I do dishwash them. Life is too short. They’re replaced for kitchen duty every three-four years - the old knives reground and repurposed for use in my shop.

As a side note for any would-be riggers or knot typers: The “cheap” ceramic kitchen knives from a big box store do yeoman’s service cutting synthetic line for a tenth the price of a ceramic Riggers Knife.

Re: Cast iron, I usually use mine for cooking salmon, so if I don’t wash it in soap and water, I’d need to just pack up and find a new place to live.
I scrub the skillet with half a lemon, wipe it clean with an absorbent cloth, and apply a light coat of oil while warm. Though generally I grill salmon, so this mostly pertains to lessor fishes. I concur that a little soap and water won’t damage a proper seasoning much, but I am still loathe to do it.

Is this a Catalina bug?
I don’t believe so. At least, as with your last issue, it’s not ubiquitous. I haven’t had an issue printing both sides of a page to a Brother Laser Printer while using Catalina — though I can’t swear I’ve done so with a 40 page document. (It’s been a long while since I’ve needed to print a contract or proposal for review.) There is something of an informal Brother “fan club” within my local Mac/tech circle — a rare thing we all seem to agree on — and nobody has brought this issue to the table.

Edit to add: It’s not likely to be the cause (because as I recall the printer sends a message back through the computer) but confirm that you have the rear door on the Brother closed. When open (for straight feed of heavy stock), duplex printing is a physical impossibility for the printer.

I know it’s frustrating when people chime in with “works for me”. (I’ve been on the receiving end myself.) However, it’s also necessary to distinguish problems that are universal, or wide-spread, from those occurring rarely. Often because of local factors.

That said, while my HomePods aren’t without the occasionally glitch they do generally work as expected. The Minis stay connected to the (Orbi) WiFi. The O.G. stereo pair work as an independent music player, an AirPlay target and as the audio output from the AppleTV.

This doesn’t guarantee the problem isn’t with the Apple gear of course. But in both cases above I’d be looking for other causes as well.

WiFi and Bluetooth in control center, which “disconnect until tomorrow.” Why would I want that, rather than simply turning them off until I decide I want them on?
I can tell you why someone might want that… When the house network loses internet connectivity it’s great to “set it aside” for a day and pick up an alternative WiFi network. Same for an over-taxed, slow guest WiFi at a local pub — switch it off it for now (without discarding the password, or removing it as an auto login) and pick up the ubiquitous Xfinity. Most importantly, it does this in a way that’s elder safe and understandable.

The behavior you want is made available in Settings. I ask that Control Center be left alone to work as intended.

I believe that Airplane Mode shut down the GPS Radio. (And also that this has always been the case.)

  • Turning on Airplane Mode turns off all radios except for Bluetooth—you can’t make calls, but you can listen to music, play games, watch videos, and use other apps that don’t require network or phone connections. If you turn off Bluetooth while you're in Airplane Mode, your device will remember that and will turn off Bluetooth the next time that you turn on AirPlane Mode.

(Of course, we can now enable WiFi too.)

There is some online debate (but nothing I found from a definitive source) that posits that because GPS is receive only it is left active. Even if true, as I understand it, Location Services uses cellular triangulation to get the GPS into the ballpark. Your phone aquires a location almost immediately. Pure GPS takes some time to locate its position from a cold start in a location distant from its last “fix”. Way back when, I had to stop a Land-Rover moving at 30mph to aquire satellites. It took 10-20 minutes for Garmin to do so. I’m sure things have improved somewhat. But a cold start moving at 600mph… ¯\(ツ)/¯.
