This is a case where I think they sequel will surpass the original. For original movies, it's the other way around; the first introduction to a new world is, to me, more captivating than the revisit. With the Mario movie, now that most of the groundwork is laid, and we get to focus on things other than the fish-out-of-water angle. I'm naturally biased, as most of us here are, in that we've known the Mario world years, if not decades. I believe that if I was 8, and not 38, I'd absolutely LOVE the first one.

Unless they're really esoteric (like possible musical references), probably as many as there were Star-Lord references in the first: 0.
Now that you mention it, there is a Star-Lord reference in SMGM, isn't there?

It's common knowledge that Rosalina in the original work gives Mario a luma, which would make him the lord of a star.

... And I'll be that guy, the 90's super Mario Bros movie was a great movie, just a terrible super Mario Bros movie.

I was 10 when that movie came out. Having been raised on a diet of Short Circuit, Back to the Future, Goonies, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, it definitely landed with me. And it still holds up today.

Wish I could say the same about other pillars of my childhood. Flight of the Navigator, for example, is a truly terrible movie that nobody should watch.

Anyway, this movie looks really good. Could they have actually figured out how to tell interesting stories based on games that infamously have no stories?

I'm hoping this is the case as well (along with my Det. Pikachu sequel, where the hell is it???). Sonic 1 was a pretty generic buddy cop film with Sonic thrown in, but Sonic 2 and especially Sonic 3 started to dive head first into making it an actual Sonic storyline movie. Mario should be doing the same, even if that leaves some folks behind or makes it worse as a "film".

Also stop 80s nostalgia baiting with the music and just use the thousands of game tracks that already exist, no need for licensed music.

You take that back, scuzzbucket! /s

I loved that movie as a kid and showed it to my kids a few years ago. My daughter ended up loving it and watching it daily for a few months.

I used to wonder why in 1990 Nintendo sought for a live-action Super Mario movie over Legend of Zelda, considering the difference in storytelling and worldbuilding between the two properties. After reviewing the releases and units sold between the franchises in that point in time, it's clear Super Mario dominates by several times. Wishing for the success of this new movie, as well as the upcoming LoZ movie.

How many trailer reviews are we gonna do? Movie reviews are one thing.. but a trailer ? Feels like a real slow news day I guess.
Here's a clue for why something gets covered here, and it's not "hurr hurr slow news day".

Do we think the community is interested in knowing about it? And—secondarily but almost as important—do we think the community is interested in discussing it?

The second part is key, because sometimes there will be some bit of news that isn't all that important, or is widely covered elsewhere, but we still want to provide a discussion platform for the community. People might already know about it, but they want to talk about it here, and see what other people think.

If you are not interested in discussing the new Mario trailer that's fine. But nobody tricked you into clicking on a headline that clearly started with "Super Mario Galaxy Movie trailer".

I will not stand for this Flight of the Navigator slander. That's an absolute classic that every fan of movies from that era absolutely should watch.

I was obsessed with it when I was a kid. Tried to watch it as an adult, and didn't make it very far. The magic was gone, and all that was left was a bad movie. 🤷‍♂️

How many references to Captain Marvel do you think that they are going to add to the film?

I saw something yesterday about how Brie Larson admitted to being a huge fan of the Super Mario Galaxy game to the point where she got incredibly dedicated to beating it. So, I'd imagine that she's over the moon about getting to be in the movie!

We need a scientific study about the intense, near-24/7 whining thought about Brie Larson that must be required to comment this! Does it get exhausting? How many others like this are there?

Knowing that she was the star of Captain Marvel and that Captain Marvel is also a "protector of the cosmos" is whining about Brie Larson to you?

I just found it funny that it was a character with a similar job description. In the picture Rosalina even has a star similar to Captain Marvel. Yeah I know that it's something from the character unrelated. But I thought that it was a funny coincidence. That's not whining about her.
