And this was pretty much the result. We are just waiting for the cascade that will burn away all the remaining costs and income, bringing them up to breakeven.
Just wait until the bots start paying via CC fraud. Followed by chargebacks and the penalty fees.
Like Stalin put a lot of effort into agriculture.Slashing and burning takes effort!
With that in mind, you can't deny Musk has been putting a whole lot of effort into Twitter.
If the contract is at an end...is it really 'cutting them off'? Its business, choose better. Musk should understand its just business, no?My experience with the big cloud companies is they go to great pains to avoid even the appearance of damaging a customer. I get the sense it isn't completely altruistic, but an attempt to avoid regulation. No matter the reason, both companies really really don't want to cut off a customer, even a shitty one.
Yep. That's what most of the fraudsters tried to do when I worked at Google: pay for their scam ads with stolen credit cards. Fortunately, we had a very good payment fraud / "risk" team that was very good at catching them before we let them spend a dime. The future is here: spam accounts pay for verification with stolen CC. As long as the benefits outweigh the costs, it will be keep happening.
Truly non-euclidean Jenga.Super 4.20-dimensional ultra-genius chess, this is. If costs are cut to zero, it will cost NOTHING to run the company. Pure, undiluted profit!
You can ride in a verified Taxi for $8 in gas.I cut my Taxi business costs by 4x by not filling up the gas tanks!
It's not that uncommon. A friend of mine was an attorney specializing in construction contractors suing each other over unpaid bills. He made enough money to retire early.Man, I wish I could cut costs by just not paying any of my bills.
You bet they are:One of the big doom events is in August, when EU laws about what content must be moderated come into force. I expect that they are watching Twitter, preparing to make an example of it.
I keep seeing the same ad for a grill basket over and over.I'm not completely clear as to how Twitter is paying any bills, as I have not seen a single ad on Twitter in weeks. Even going there with a browser with no extensions loaded yields no advertising. I'm not sure what to make of that.
Exactly this. All the scammers on twitter have blue checks now anyway because it promotes their tweets to the top of replies. Bots are worse than ever.
You're giving way to much credibility to the things that come out of Musk's mouth. It is hard to imagine a world where Twitter is no longer. Would it be the largest failed social media company in history? If it actually happened, and Musk was truly out every dollar of the $44B plus whatever lawsuits etc, I wonder if his turned focus to Tesla and SpaceX would actually make all that money back, faster than it would have it Twitter stayed up? Those two companies are arguably providing a greater long-term good than Twitter so far.
He is on record saying acquiring Twitter was not about making money, so he knows it will be a loss an extended period of time. Perhaps a permanent one. It will be an interesting 6-12 months under Yaccarino. We'll see.
I still see plenty, but they are definitely lower quality or new brands. I block way more than I used to. Even if they are placing them, they have to be charging less.I'm not completely clear as to how Twitter is paying any bills, as I have not seen a single ad on Twitter in weeks. Even going there with a browser with no extensions loaded yields no advertising. I'm not sure what to make of that.
So does that make Musk a pedo guy?According to Platformer, Twitter relies on Google Cloud to host services "related to fighting spam, removing child sexual abuse material, and protecting accounts, among other things."
You're right, we should laugh at people who think printing your own money is smart! What are they gonna do, buy a printing press? Pft. They'd probably do something even dumber, like make it a digital currency powered by destroying the earth.Or, you could just do what the government does when it runs out of money to pay its bills:
Print more money!
Yep. That's what most of the fraudsters tried to do when I worked at Google: pay for their scam ads with stolen credit cards. Fortunately, we had a very good payment fraud / "risk" team that was very good at catching them before we let them spend a dime.
I really doubt that Twitter even has a fraud prevention team anymore. I shudder to think about the number of credit card chargebacks they're going to be dealing with.![]()
I'm sure block lists take up a lot less space and resources than long form tweets and long form video.Oh, and one more thing, Musk recently tweeted about possibly removing the block function in Twitter because large block lists costs more server resources and he's asked users to delete their block lists. If he follows through, now all that hate speech won't be able to be blocked by legitimate users.
Musk seems to think that everyone going there is paying for the privilege themselves with a subscription.I'm not completely clear as to how Twitter is paying any bills, as I have not seen a single ad on Twitter in weeks. Even going there with a browser with no extensions loaded yields no advertising. I'm not sure what to make of that.
Yeah, it's bullshit. Musk originally broached the subject because someone whined to him about being blocked (probably one if his adoring MAGA asshat followers). The real issue with removing the block function is that is one of the tools a Twitter user has to stop harassment, stalking, etc.I'm sure block lists take up a lot less space and resources than long form tweets and long form video.
My experience is on the inbound side, but not really as far as I understand. It's either automatic, or if Musk refused, they could literally turn off the ability for Musk to accept CC charges.I'm not terribly familiar with payment processing systems; is it safe to assume that chargebacks are not something that Elon can toss on the "Do not pay" pile?
I was actually thinking more like Leona Helmsley but close enough I guess.- Donald J. Trump (eugh)
I use Twitter for sports coverage mostly - and frankly that experience hasn't changed much. But comments on anything else is pretty much a non-stop onslaught of blue-check MAGA ethno-fascists, rendering comments meaningless, with no reason to interact. At the same time all of this is happening, Musk is contemplating limits on the ability to block users. Presumably because blue checks are getting frequently blocked for posting drivel that appears first in replies.
Exactly this.
Ever since the $8 "verification" fee was add, a blue check has become equivalent to the old "firstname bunchofnumbers" IDs.
Well, they are in a hotel...You're thinking too small. Look at all those freeloading employees using their cubicles for FREE. Screw that marxist bullshit; it's high time they paid rent on that space. And shouldn't they be paying annual dues for the privilege of working there?
Merchant fees are usually withheld from the payouts so it is pretty hard to avoid paying them. Merchant providers / payment processors are very good at limiting their risk and ensuring they don’t get stuck with the bill. They have experience with far better scam artist and fraudsters than Musk.I'm not terribly familiar with payment processing systems; is it safe to assume that chargebacks are not something that Elon can toss on the "Do not pay" pile?
Who among us, I ask you, has not gotten blasted on drugs and announced to the world that a market-shaking deal has been made when it actually hasn't?Just like fulfilling promises, honoring signed contracts, not defaming strangers, refraining from making demonstrably false public material statements about companies you run...
Seeing that the claim is that large block lists increase server costs my guess is a crappy implementation that sucks processor power. Which wouldn't be too strange if something that is intended for use for (lets do an ass pull) up to a 1000 entries per Twitter user gets scaled up to millions.I'm sure block lists take up a lot less space and resources than long form tweets and long form video.
As a bonus, you won't have to pay taxes, either.I wish that I was so rich that I could simply choose not to pay my bills.
If the pedos are paying for Twitter Blue so they can find/download child porn, the police are going to be delighted. That'll make it trivial to do a mass bust with minimal investigative work. Especially compared to taking down a darknet site.Is anyone keeping track? Musk may be running the biggest kiddy porn marketplace on the internet, and its out on the open, not on the dark web. Could this be his path to make Twitter profitable?
Like the old joke:"With Twitter ad sales reportedly still plunging, the need for cost-cutting seemingly remains, and trust and safety has historically been an area where Musk has made steep cuts."
I blew one wing off and we're still going down, surely if I blow the other wing off to make us lighter we'll avoid hitting the ground?
