Musk calls Twitter verification system “bullsh—,” announces $8 monthly charge

The one thing we now know Musk didn't do over the past six months was develop a business plan for making Twitter profitable.
Maybe this is some kind of long short sell-game? He loves those doesn't he!

With what? The shares aren't publicly traded anymore.

Yes it was sarcasm, I know that's hard for you Americans to pick up on though. I *thought* that would be obvious for the very reason you give, but if you think about it he has essentially short sold Twitter - to himself. I guess intellectual dark humour just doesn't fly here.
Has it occurred to you that maybe you just aren't funny?

Because it's occurred to everyone else.
So edgy, it has occured to me that autism brains think differently
Aww, it's okay, Child Roland. It doesn't really matter that you're not funny. What's important is that you're bigoted trash.

It would be shame if a group of former twitter engineers created a competing site with less fascism.
I asked about this in another thread. The question is, how hard would it be? I believe Twitter has some patents, not sure how important.

Let's just say "Twitter Clone" is an extremely common educational project and there are thousands of different twitter clones made by programming students and likely at the very least 5 more created everyday. The software isn't the barrier, it's the "mind-share"/network effects. Even if a student's clone has complete feature-parity with Twitter, that clone is essentially worthless if users' friends/community/interests don't also use said clone.

supergenius inspiring lots of confidence with his latest "ideas" ...
Spam a famous person's DMs for just a dollar!
Oh, and no identify verification at all for folks ready to pony up $8 a month.

So, how long do you suppose it'll be before people flood Musk's DM inbox with stupid messages? And how long before various celebrities run screaming from the platform?

Musk is about as super genius as Mohammad Bin Salman....

I may have missed it (I did go through all 17 pages, but I can occasionally miss stuff nonetheless), but one of the biggest and dumbest parts about all of this is that people can change their name and username. Even before it became clear that there will be zero vetting of anyone to get the badge, there was the reality that "Bob Baker" could verify themselves using a stolen ID, and as soon as they were verified, change their handle and their name.

Bob Baker one day, Twitter Safety (California) the next. That's going to happen, and it's going to fucking suck.

You mean Bluesky? Considering each server will have its own rules and moderation, I don’t see how it will have less fascism. If anything it’ll have more. Though of course other servers don’t have to federate with the blatantly fascist servers.

How is that different than Mastodon?
It’s not. Much. We don’t know much about the specifics of Bluesky yet but it is in essence another Mastodon.

Musk revealed all anyone needed to know about his twitter purchase when he tweeted that Pelosi conspiracy theory in a reply to Hillary Clinton of all people.

Don't forget that Jason "put me in coach" Calacanis has his fingers all over this shitshow too. He was prominent in that text message release from the trial telling Musk he could slash the headcount based on a superficial comparison with other tech cos.

The only way I see Twitter not being the dumpster fire that it already was pre Musk is by moving to a community moderation model with some sort of channel based system for collecting content that can house the nutballs in clearly marked cess pits. Basically reddit with a less shit interface. But it will never happen because the morons who live on it love their amplified town hall as is.

And forget the bots, without moderation I don't know how you handle politicians, celebs, and other notables who want to use Twitter as their medium of choice to broadcast lies and hate with an algorithm that amplifies their noise and the inevitable outrage it provokes. I feel unwell every time I look at the trending pages.

Don't forget he had a post saying something like "Vote for Republicans to balance out the Democrat president" that was appended to the bottom of various tweets (in web view, anyway). Blatant attempted manipulation of twitter's users.
