Metroid Dread brings Nintendo’s classic back as a 2D sequel on October 8

Probably the best news a Metroid fan could hope for. Everyone wants to see more Prime 4 but being real you know it's years away. A good 2D entry doesn't take as long to develop, and can actually be delivered to fans in a timely manner. When Prime 4 comes it will be worth it but after waiting for Half Life Alyx I'm glad to see Nintendo sees the value in a budget entry to soften the wait. After playing some Oddworld Soulstorm, it proves 2D games are still fun. Soulstorm even looked better than many 3D games I've played, though the bugs and unforgiving checkpoints did make it feel like a slog at times. I assume this game won't have those issues.

Very happy to be getting another Metroid, and here's hoping it's not one of the rare failures. I was skeptical about 3d Metroid and was happy to be proven wrong.

However, does anyone else feel like the visual style is kind of blah? First off, there's the weird red, white and blue (and also glowing green) Samus. Now, Samus has had approximately one gajillion different suits at this point, so there's probably one it looks like. But to me, it's just... no thanks. Perhaps the amount of white that clashes with the rest? The white sticks out more than the white in the light suit, even.

Also, the EMMIs look very Portal-ish to me.

I'll still play it if it's good, but right now I'm giving it a bit of side-eye.

Edit: Watching the trailer makes me realize what the suit looks like: a costume. Like something a superhero would be wearing. And not Iron Man, either. Power Girl springs to mind, but there's probably one of the legions of characters that are even closer.

Edit: Perhaps it's also how bloom-crazy they've went that's making it feel un-Metroid. Not a lot of the typical shadowy darkness that I associate with the series.

The EMMI design seems in line with the ship computer Adam from Metroid Fusion/4. And the new look seems like it probably follows the X infection Samus got from the same game.

The rumor was true! This has made my day!

I bought a GBA because of Metroid: Fusion

I bought a New 2DS because of Metroid: Samus Returns

I'll be buying a Switch Lite because of Metroid: Dread

Way to go Nintendo! Give the Metroid fans what they want! This made E3 for me!

Can't wait for October!

The Metroid series is alive and kicking!

Prime 4 is coming to Switch likely in late 2022 or early 2023 as well.

Two Metroid games on one console? What is this, the Gamecube era?!

I didn't think this would ever happen. Apparently the developers had the concept for this game roughly 15 years ago, but didn't move forward with it because they weren't confident they could implement it properly. Good! Hopefully we'll see their true vision.

I'm glad they're leaning into the horror elements of Metroid. It's not a horror game, but in my opinion, the horror elements are what made Metroid 3 transcend. All of its elements are solid, and it's a great action-adventure title. But I think it was the many moments that gave me chills as a kid that made such a lasting impression.

Maybe it's just because I've been playing it recently but the game this most resembles is Strider (the 2014 remake). The graphics and game play are eerily similar. Which is a good thing, Strider is fun, and I can see buying a Switch just for Metroid Dread and Metroid Prime. (Also since Strider has some strong Metroidvania influences it's really a case of cross pollination, I don't mean to ding the honor of the Metroid series:)

It definitely doesn't look like I would have personally hoped.

Metroid to me is moody, atmospheric, but also bright and saturated. That's part of the alien look, and what makes it not generic.

This ... feels more dark than moody. Like, actually dark, lots of the areas in the trailer are just kind of muddy and indistinct. And the white smooth tech look on her armor and the enemies doesn't really fit either. It's a new game, it's okay to be different, but I'm not immediately vibing with the artistic choices of a beloved series I guess.

It honestly looks like a different game that has some Samus skin applied to me. Hopefully that becomes less true once the whole game unfolds.

I'll be the lone voice of dissent. MercurySteam's last Metroid game was a dumpster fire outside an abortion clinic. They took their single new mechanic, the melee stun, and shoehorned it into absolutely everything. It felt like when a 5 year old learns a new knock-knock joke, and insists on interrupting everyone else over and over to tell the same joke.

I love Metroid, and I couldn't bring myself to finish M2SR.

I had my issues with Samus Returns but overall I enjoyed it. The melee mechanic was overused, especially in the early levels, but I thought the game hit a more enjoyable balance as I got further in and Samus's projectile abilities became more powerful - the melee attack started feeling more like one tool in a big tool box and less like the only tool. Besides that, I felt like the biggest problems with Samus Returns were just artifacts of the game it was remaking: the linear zone-by-zone layout of the world, and the repetitive metroid boss fights.

Fundamentally though, I thought the game was a fun modernization of the 2D Metroid format. It's certainly a better game than something like Other M.

Samus Returns' had its faults. I didn't like how it was combat heavy. Needed more exploration uninhibited by what seemed like constant combat.

I did like some of the new mechanics it introduced to the series. The biggest? Full 360 aiming.

I haven't seen the video. Does Metroid Dread have 360 degree aiming?

I agree with some of the sentiments being brought up.
The new visual style is.....kinda weird for the series. Robots? Interesting....

Once I get over the initial shock of a new 2D Metroid, I'll determine how I like it. Need to see more of this game...

Metroid Dread is finally real!!

Samus Returns was good, but being stuck on the 3DS in 2017 while everyone was hungry for Switch content was a real bummer, especially considering the fact that they had to compromise it to 30 FPS to make it work.

Looking forward to seeing what Mercurystream will pull off on the Switch.

This is great news.

MercurySteam was also involved in the only decent Castlevania game to be released in the past decade, Castlevania Subtitle Lords of Shadow SubSubtitle Mirror of Fate.

Oh, they were the developers for LoS: MoF? Suddenly my optimism has been replaced by cautious optimism.

The Wii era? Other M and Metroid Prime 3, perhaps.

Why? Both Lord of the shadows games were pretty good, of course taking the stealth parts of the second game out of the equation.

Everything that was normally look metallic now looks more like painted plastic. That's a big part of why her suit looks weird to me. It's also present in EMMI, especially the white shell areas. That's why it reminds me of the portal robots.

And yes, I think you've nailed it when you talk about the alien look. And hey, maybe it's not supposed to be alien. But I don't feel like what they substituted for that is as special. Most of the screenshots just look like a generic factory that moviemakers rent out to make their movie look futuristic.

Overall, it looks like a slightly more advanced 3DS game to me. I actually looked at the screenshots first, then scrolled back up to see if it was a 3DS game. It has that look of a game that is 2D but the sprites and backgrounds were rendered in 3D before conversion. Everything is just sort of flat.

Hey, there were two for the Wii as well. Other M was...interesting, but MP3 was pretty great.

I have never played a 3d Metroid, however I loved super Metroid and beat that game at least 10 times, including at least twice over the last decade.

I have a switch and would give a 2d Metroid game a chance.
Mind if I ask why you didn't give the 3D games a chance?

Like a lot of fans, I was surprised when I played Metroid Prime and Metroid Fusion and thought the former was a much better Metroid game than the latter. The controls are maybe a little dated, going back to it, but it's still a fantastic game.

Course, if FPS's give you motion sickness or there's some other reason you can't play it, then fair enough. But it's not just a great game, it's a great Metroid game.

My humble opinion:
I loved Metroid 2 on the gameboy. Super metroid was even nicer. But the whole 3D stuff never got me interested. It feels like it's not the same game at all... just because it's based on the same story doesn't mean anything to me, comparing 2d metroid to 3d metroid might as well be comparing it to metroid: the board game. I discovered a whole bunch of indie games that feel more enjoyable than whatever Nintendo brought to the table.

I recently got Carrion. It scratched my metroidvania itch. There are tons of other great indie games that I find more enjoyable than metroid, both in gameplay and graphics. Metroid Dread is looking sad and drab now even if they're trying to get back to 2d.

Fusion was a great game IMO, but it had some flaws. The computer giving you unskippable cutscenes that take you out of the action multiple times in each area was annoying, and the game did WAY too much handholding early on.

Personally though, I thought Zero Mission had much better gameplay, while also being as open and exploration-focused as the original. Very underrated IMO.

If you haven't played them, I'd recommend you find a friend with a GameCube and Metroid Prime and give it a shot. I was skeptical ahead of release, but they absolutely nailed the Metroid feel of exploring a dangerous alien world and finding tools to help you survive, and eventually, utterly dominate your enemies.
