Um. Uh oh. So... Was playing a game... And heard a POP from down by my leg kinda right where my gaming desktop is. And then I smelled... Something. But things kept running. So I hurridly saved, exited, shut down.

So... Things are pretty hot in there, when I open up the side. But never saw any magic smoke. So... Gonna let it cool down, have some dinner, read a book, and then pull off some components, look around, maybe a cap blew.

The motherboard is an OG x370... So with some luck, a mobo cap went, and I can get a decent AM4 board to replace it for this weekend and be back up and running soonish. Or maybe it was a PSU cap, although it's bottom mounted PSU.

Oh, lookie what I found when I went to pull/open the PSU!

Well that sure looks like a cap...now where could it be from.... <download mobo picture and starts looking>

There's where it belongs!

RIP Biostar x370GT5 v5.0, age of death: 8 years 362 days from date of ordering. It provided reliable, solid service. It will be missed.

Thank everything that it wasn't my 7900XT or something like that. WAAY more expensive than I'd like to replace that with something decent performing.

EDIT: Started a thread (https://meincmagazine.com/civis/threads/need-a-new-am4-motherboard-recommendations.1512165/) but why not here too, anyone have a recommendation for a new AM4 mobo?

I got a script for Nurtec ODT for migraines. I had one yesterday and it was the first time I took it. OMFG, that shit works! I've been on triptans before for migraines and they effectively stopped working. I would have to take 2 or 3 pills to make the pain go away, and I still had scrambled egg brains for the rest of the day. With Nurtec, the pain was gone in about 3-4 hours and my brain was able to function. It completely salvages my day.

My wife had a similar experience with Ubrelvy. Night and day experience for her. Glad it's helping!

The doctor said he would call in a new set of scripts so they were all on the same refill cycle, which is nice. I figured the pharmacy wouldn't fill most of them until next month; after all, I had put in a refill request for four of the five last weekend.

Nope. They filled them.

Now I have 2.5 bottles of the statin, and two of most of the rest. One of the water pill.

Just a little weird now.

Drug names, or "brands" on Amazon?
At this point, same thing. Especially with prescriptions that don't abide by "U always comes after Q".

To answer your question (not sure if you were joking or not): They're name-brand migraine drugs.

I always told my wife I had a missed opportunity to get paid to come up with the nonsensical prescription drug names.

At one time I heard that a lot of the names used for prescription drugs were made up by a couple of women living in Chicago. I do not know the veracity of that, possibly an urban legend.

As opposed to the Amazon company names, which are apparently generated by letting a cat walk across a keyboard.

Well,...Amazon doesn't have to pay the cat a living wage, and doesn't need to pay for an H-1B.
The way Amazon's going, they'll figure it's too expensive to keep the cat - food and litter is pricey! - and so they'll spend billions on creating a feline LLM that can create cat-generated names after years of training the model on actual cats on actual keyboards.

TIL I learned something about the Mark 14 Torpedo:

  • It tended to run "circular", failing to straighten its run once set on its prescribed gyro-angle setting, and instead, to run in a large circle, thus returning to strike the firing ship
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_14_torpedo

Yeah, I would say that is a bit of design flaw!

My internet was down so naturally I called Astound to see if they had any additional discounts on their shitty service. They discounted another $10 on top of the existing loyalty discount I already had.

Well well well, Mr. CEO. Looks like that new yacht will have to wait a little longer!

Cats on the keyboard
In the server room
Apps going down
While the boss goes boom
When you comin' home dad?
I don't know when
This damn server's hung again
It's hung again

"Oh, I bounced the server just the other day
Changed the router and the gateway,
And there are apps to patch, vendors to pay
Prod server crashed on the holiday
New kid's searching for some code, and before I knew
The server's gone and hung again, yeah, server's gone and hung again..."

𝅘𝅥𝅮 Well, you can tell by the way I write my code
My program runs, in user mode
Apps all crash and blame starts to fly, I've been kicked around
Get the stink eye
And now it's all right, it's okay
And I may get that patch someday
And we can go and test in to prod
Uptime metrics are a facade.

Whether you're a brother or whether you're a mother
You're keepin' things live, keepin' things live
Know the apps're breakin' and everybodys shakin'
And we're keepin' things live, keepin' things live
Ah, ha, ha, ha, keepin' things live, keepin' things live
Ah, ha, ha, ha, keepin' things live
Ah when you
want... 𝅘𝅥𝅮

Apologies to the Bee Gees...

Welp, just found out my up the stairs/upstairs neighbor apparently passed away a few weeks ago. He was older but still fairly mobile when he moved in a year or what not ago, but definitely his mobility took a big hit since last summer. Sad, but fundamentally I guess I'm not that surprised. Guess I'll be getting a new neighbor sometime soon then.

My building is generally occupied by people who haven't had the best of luck in life, and in some cases are nearing the end of that unlucky life. We've had five of them die in the 10-1/2 years I've been here, of a total usual capacity of 8.
Yikes. You should take it as your personal mission to bring the building's average back to normal.
