Friend is flying in from Austin, landing at LAX, we are getting a car and leaving Friday morning. I'm very familiar with the routes into S.F. and am HOPING I can make it to Big Sur before the fog and night scare us half to death getting out...but other than that. We have the entire weekend to drive. Anything I should do? Places to see? People to kill? Here are a few things that I know I want to do.

1) Russian River brewery in Santa Rosa. This is non-negotiable. I need my Consecration.
2) Astoria, OR. Shot for shot remake of the Goonies.
3) Big Sur. Probably the prettiest drive in the continental U.S. Want to spend at least a little time in Julia Pfieffer state park.

And thats it. I've been to SF plenty of times so not sure if there is anything there that I need to do or see. Friend is vegetarian, but is okay with eggs and cheese, so have the food recommendations ready.

Crater lake is awesome. The fishing there is apparently amazing. The hike down is easy. The hike back up is a bit more, but the main thing to remember is to use shoes you can wash later.

The fine silt like trail dust clings to your shoes.

I thought the boat tour was 40 minutes? Nope, 2 hours. Worth it.

The ticket kiosk at the store at the front of the park may be down still. The ticket kiosk at the hotel works, but the expectation is to buy tickets for the next day, not same day trips. You can try for it, but no guarantee.

Also, while the boat was sold out according to the kiosk, there was tons of space left when we went.

So if you miss the tickets, it's still worth a hike down and checking/paying at the actual dock if they let you buy last minute tickets there.

Are you planning on cutting inland after Big Sur, or are you planning on staying on the 1 or 101 up the coast? If you do plan on taking the scenic route, there's a fish and chips place in Port Orford, Oregon, called The Crazy Norwegian. It's small, but it was tasty. The drive is also incredible, but it will take longer than just shooting up I-5.

Just shooting up the I-5, going from LA to Oregon is still going to be a solid 10-12 hours minimum.

Yeah, I'm guessing they're going to stop somewhere. Otherwise stopping in those other places will make this the longest day ever.

Mount St Helens is worth a look. The Johnson Ridge Observatory is easily accessible of I5 in southern Washington.
The various Redwoods state parks in northern California are great if you like really tall trees. These are along the 101.
The Oregon coast is supposed to be really good. I have only seen a bit of through very heavy rain so I didn't see much.

Not sure which weekend you were driving up, but if you can take the extra hours head over to Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Park, which is off of I-5 a ways.

If you're driving back down, I recommend RT-395 down the backside of the Sierra's, at least from Reno (so take I-80 over Donner's Pass from I-5). Very pretty drive if you're heading down during the day.

Also, there's the Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum.
If you stop in tillamook, get the deep fried cheese curds in the diner.

If you stop at the Evergreen air and space museum. . . I'm not too far away, in the middle of Silicon Forest. (I hate that name)

Good, now remember to spread that around as much as possible when you get back to California. It's cold and damp and you think you may have seen a bear on I5 by Safeco Field.

Big Sur area is kind of still on fire, so not the best time to be driving up the coast.

I don't actually know if the road is still closed, but even Silicon Valley was all filled with smoke today.

RE: Vegetarian food

Dharma's in Capitola (near Santa Cruz)

Delicious Crepes Bistro in Santa Clara.

Garden Fresh in Mountain View.

The Butcher's Son in Berkeley.

There's great Indian food all over the Bay Area, and many are all vegetarian. One of my personal favorites is a little hole in the wall where they might have to go and find a translator to take your order. https://www.yelp.com/biz/lovely-sweets- ... unnyvale-2. Also like Ananda Bhavan in Sunnyvale.

Almost Live was awesome. Like The Ballard Driving Academy.

So I'm back. One way back to LAX was super cheap, got a flight for like, $43 the week before the trip. Hooray for online price alerts!

The west coast is beautiful. I drove around up from Los Angeles after having breakfast in Venice up the 101 through Big Sur, down into SF, then to Santa Rosa, CA for Russian River and then across to the coast, back across again to the 101 to the 5 up through Lake Shasta...

Yep. Just the whole entire part of this country is beautiful. Fuck the rest of it, I'm not leaving the west coast anytime soon...

Food was okay. Its kinda tough to travel with a Vegetarian that is leaning towards vegan. Fucker outright didn't trust most Asian food places (fish sauces, stocks they would use, msg..etc etc) so a lot of eggs and cheese were eaten. Kind of a bummer, but I worked with him. I got to eat some mussels on Bainbridge island while watching a table of hot old women get progressively drunker on wine.

Downtown Portalnd (we stayed at the Vintage hotel) was awesome. For the short time we walked around and talked to people, it had a much better vibe and feeling than Seattle. Got a haircut, ate at the Deschutes public house (yum) and just tried to walk around and get lost. Then off to Canon Beach down the 26 from downtown Portland. Got some weed hard candies for the drive up, had the best coffee of the trip in a small ass coffee house in Canon Beach. Ate a hard candy, didnt' feel anything, ate half of another and fuck was I high. My buddy who was driving that leg of the trip was laughing at me because the weed took hold and it seemed like i was driving through time. I had to calm myself down and enjoy the high rather than fight it.

Downtown Seattle needs more things to do. Thats all I have to say about that.

And Seattle, your strippers are VERY aggressive. I've never had my peepers pulled out in the middle of your club while two beautiful black women attempt to convince me what I need is a threesome. Sorry ladies: budget did not call for threesomes this trip. Maybe next time.

Overall, good trip. the Chihuly exhibit at the Space Needle was awesome. Much better than the actual space needle.
