Liam Neeson is justice’s “new daddy” in Naked Gun trailer

Verdict:
More Sledgehammer than Frank Drebbin.

Frank wasn't casually (or gleefully)violent. That was Sledgehammer. Also Neeson, by all respect doesn't have the comedic presence of Nielsen(did they cast him because of the name similarity? They should claim that they did. That would be funny.) Worth a look, but Naked Gun it isn't.

Before Airplane Nielsen was primarily known for dramatic roles. The occasional lead role but mostly supporting roles and villains. I think there's an element of taking an actor known for action and serious roles and make him be stupid.

Liam Neeson is an unabashed racist. I’ll pass.

He's been very apologetic about it, but I've got to say the Cold Pursuit thing made me very wary of him. Shame, because some of his other views I'm on board with; I hope, as he says, he moved past this toxicity, and I kind of have to hope people can learn and change.

I was also going to mention A Touch of Cloth; I'm wary that I saw Spaceballs recently and didn't find it funny any more. But then the same was true of Beetlejuice - I think the second one is a better film, just not as good as I thought the first one was when it came out. (Airplane is still funny, but there's a share of jokes that haven't aged well.) I actually did enjoy A Million Ways To Die In The West (probably more than The Orville, which I feel falls in the gap between tribute and parody - but then Galaxy Quest is a lot to live up to).

This trailer doesn't do much for me, concerns about the star or no. Possibly I'm just too depressed about the state of the world for this to crack a smile. Maybe the Honest Trailers for it will be funnier.

I would pay good money to see that in the theater, self parody or not.

Hmmm, yes, a deep, darkly comic, politically-accurate Sci-Fi series...

Nah, they'll never reboot DS9. Can you imagine making a show today with a Black single father captain/Messiah, female alien terrorist as his first officer, a transgender science officer, an Irishman and his Imperial English best friend, not to mention an actual reclaiming of Shylock?

The preview looks promising. I wonder, though, if the derivative nature of it and indeed so many movies now (marvel/ Disney live action/ safe remakes) is similar to how AI tends to be derivative rather than original. It’s not awful but it’s not covering but ground really.

I feel like there's some 20th-century exceptionalism to this idea. A lot of those "original" works are themselves derivatives of prior works. So when they rebooted The Lion King, it was a CGI reboot of an animated version of Hamlet.

If anything, I feel like maybe one problem with modern society is that we stopped reimagining The Bard and other works in favor of shiny fast action sequences strung together with a few one-line conversations.

"Cigarette?"
"Yes, I know"

The humour in Police Squad/Naked Gun was largely based around language. I doubt this will be but that doesn't mean we can't enjoy it.

I saw this on the weekend when I went to Ballerina with my adult children for Fathers day.
It when completely over their heads. Dauter 23 completely missed the OJ reference.
Unless old people are the target demo (and I don't think al lot odf us are going to the theatre these days) I think this will be a bust.

The Naked Gun reboot

If it hasn't got Leslie Nielsen in it, I'm struggling to accept this as being a Naked Gun movie, whatever they call it.

Edit: Ok, so after watching the trailer, I'm very cautiously optimistic, and man enough to admit that this could be worth keeping an eye on, as long as we didn't see all the best jokes in the trailer.

Haven't seen that, but I would also recommend Charlie Brooker's Touch of Cloth, which is a bit obscure because it was on Sky in the UK and I'm not sure many people saw it. Another police procedural, lots of visual humour, high density of gags, mostly played straight, leans even more into the absurd. Considerably more "adult" though. The first one in particularly is really funny, somewhat diminishing returns by the third one.

Just adding another recommendation for A Touch Of Cloth. John Hannah plays the main character, and as mentioned it is played straight which makes it work. There are a few things in it that may not translate too well outside of the UK, but it is well worth a watch.

I also agree with earlier comments about Angie Tribeca. Must hunt down both of these to watch again.

To provide a different point of view to this, I watched the first episode of Touch of Cloth and wasn't impressed. They literally recycled old Police Squad jokes with British actors delivering the lines, which felt very forced and not very funny. And the "adult" elements were just cringe, IMO (the Naked Gun movies were full of adult humour, but made it work much better ... remember the concrete dildo??). I'm glad you liked it, but it just didn't work for me at all.

Edit: Yeah, thanks for the downvotes. I think I made it clear this was just my opinion. We can't all like the same things.

If you haven't done so already, drop everything you're doing and go find the original Police Squad series. The Naked Gun franchise was but a distant echo compared to Police Squad.
Agreed. The minuscule budget forced the team to focus on zingers and sight gags. Six half-hours of brilliance.

Spaceballs 2 has the problem of competing with people's nostalgic memories of Spaceballs, rather than Spaceballs itself. I like Spaceballs quite a lot, but it was just a big dumb parody movie at heart. I worry that Spaceballs 2 can be just as good but will feel worse because of the power of nostalgia.

This movie probably has a similar challenge. That said, if you're just expecting some laughs, it looks like it can deliver that.
Spaceballs is a Mel Brooks big dumb parody movie. It has some truly brilliant moments. Same with the likes of Airplane and Naked Gun. I'll show my kids those well before I'll even remember the names of any comedy flicks from the past couple of years.

I laughed several times during the preview. They did a lot of taking statements literally which is classic Naked Gun / Police Squad humor, like "take a chair." I think Pamela Anderson might be an inspired choice for the female lead; she's always struck me as somewhat aware of how silly her shows were.

In January I caught NPR's interview with Pamela Anderson. I came away impressed.

With both Seth and Liam involved, I have to think this has a lot of potential. I enjoy their work, albeit in very different genres.
I was sort of aware that Seth was a good singer, but I had no idea that he's been nominated multiple times for Grammys. The NPR interview with him about releasing his latest album of Sinatra songs was interesting.

the reveal of the hallway of dad memorials and the final bit with the scout disguise made me chuckle.
And then the cut to the portrait of Nordberg, and the "Nahhh" - perfection.

Honestly, I don't know if this will be any good at all, but regardless, it was almost worth it for that one moment alone...

Don't forget the origin of Police Squad & Naked Gun was M-Squad with Lee Marvin. Some of the plots are lifted directly from M-Squad episodes. Personally I consider M-Squad the best police show ever done and have every episode on digital files. The DVD's are well worth searching out.

Jerry Zucker was in a high school rock band called The Chevelles with Jon Paris, longtime bass and harmonica player for Johnny Winter.

Counterpoint: A Million Ways to Die in the West is probably the worst movie I've seen this decade. I wanted to watch something dumb and silly that day and still didn't crack a smile. Maybe if Seth loves the source material enough (like TNG), it will be good.

Edit: Okay, the moustache song was good. But that was it!
That captures my reaction to Men in Tights, in the vein of great comic filmmakers who sometimes miss. The only smile I cracked during the whole thing was "Unlike some Robin Hoods, I can speak with an English accent!"

Perhaps I'm positively disposed because I just finished watching all six (sigh) episodes of Police Squad! for the first time, but this looks quite promising.

I appreciate the way they're not pretending that Liam Neeson is Leslie Nielson. Sure, they're following the basic beats of the original material, but the repeated nods to Neeson's current "grubby badass" era make it seem fresh.

Look, I could use a good spoof movie. The ones we are getting now aren't living up to the early days like Top Secret, Airplane, and Naked Gun... one sec...
Okay, I've just returned from IMDB and apparently rather than spoofs in general, I may have just been a fan of David and Jerry Zucker.

How in this year of our lord 2025 anyone thinks you can satire cops for laughs is beyond me. Sometimes your source material become impossible to parody because whatever over the top antics you intend to portray have become SOP. Brooklyn 99 ran into that during BLM and it's only gotten much worse in the last 6 months.
