The game portion of Dimensions is being developed by Traveller's Tales, the people behind the popular line of Lego games that debuted with Lego Star Wars in 2005. Thus, we should probably expect gameplay that involves...
...bad camera angles and wonky jumps into 3-D planes that don't line up. FTFY.
Every.
Single.
Lego.
Game.

(I still play them, they're still so much fun!)

meh, i've bought a few dozen skylanders for my kids and not buying anything else. i've read a lot of complaints about Infinity and the nonsense they had with different versions of characters and portals and whatever. and $100 for the starter pack is too much

nice thing about skylanders is all the previous game characters work in all the newer games and the new portals work with the older games. and gamestop is starting to sell used figures at $2.99 in some cases

Hopefully this will last longer than the Lego MMO. I had a lot of fun with that, and it was a blast. Was so sad to see it closed down after only a year. This one will probably have more solid financial footing.

I can't see some sort of customization not being an option though, because customization is the primary fun of playing is actual Legos in the first place.

What would be fun? If those special NFC pieces save the custom configuration of a item on them, and then take it to a friend's house and play with it there. That could be pretty awesome.

This does sound fantastic, but what it really needs is to be able to do some sort of scan+import so you can build whole vehicles/bases and import them. That would be amazing, as the best part of lego was building cool things out of my imagination then playing with them.

Edit: Egads, what if Microsoft HoloLens could scan your lego setup and do a scaled import into Minecraft? *Mind blown*

To support this mixing of disparate characters and settings, the game's storyline focuses on a villain who is "tearing rifts between all the Lego worlds."
So the villain here wants to merge all of the Lego worlds, while the villain in the Lego Movie wanted to separate all the Lego worlds. Which is "right," then?

See Sick Bricks, which has beaten Lego to market with the Skylanders-meets-Lego concept:

http://www.sickbricks.com/

My son got a couple of Sick Bricks free during a visit to Toys R Us a month ago and he's been enjoying the game with the toys. That being said, we enjoy Lego and the Lego games (except Lego Batman 1, that wasn't enjoyable) so I can see this being a big hit by XMas.

Rez, a rails shooter/rhythm game, with the "trance vibrator" peripheral. I'm not making this up.

they haven't beaten lego to the consoles.

they beat them to the app market place.

If lego made an app that did this, they would trounce sick bricks quickly

No. The individual Branded IP based Lego video games are just to fun and popular to quit.
I would hope so, but this would be a quick way to consolidate everything.

I don’t havec any new consoles, so if I bought the xbox 360 starter kit and a few figs, and then one day I decide to buy a wii u or xbox one, I suppose I would have to buy another starter kit for the new console?

the starter kit yes, but the skylanders and the infinity figures you can move between consoles. 100% sure about the skylanders ones. Infinity they had versions 1 and 2 and you have to read up on that. and the xbox one and PS4 only have the last two skylanders games, not the earlier ones.

That my agency's web filter doesn't catch this page and label it as "Games" tells me that Sick Bricks hasn't been particularly successful.

Watch the TV series "Fringe" or the Jet LI movie "The One". When dealing with a multiverse, it's best to leave thing where they are.

They must hate parents. Well, love their money, but hate parents.

As a parent of 3 young children, I will tell them to go F themselves and yes, you may as well take my money now. Just...please, try to make me like it? Whisper some sweet nothings in my ear or something. I feel like it is the least they can do.

But no 3DS or PC version? I suppose it's just as well, the DS versions of the LEGO games aren't as good. I suppose I'll finally have to upgrade to a Wii-U.

had an app that does this,

LEGO FUSION Create & Race has been discontinued due to consumer satisfaction levels that were below LEGO standards.
EDIT: apparently its one of the 4 apps you would need to download, the other 3 are still ok.

So how do this NFC part work in this and other similar games? Do the chip have unique id per unit so it can only be registered to one account? Do they have rewritable memory to store game progress? Have they been cracked, i.e. are cheap clone chips possible?

Personally I just want the Lego parts and see possibility to buy the set and just sell the NFC piece.

"I just want to make sure that we are clear it's the fargate. "Goes far", get it?! And there is no way it came from that movie, or the syndicated series based on that movie."

From the makers of Findependence Day? We'll give it a mohawk and a wheelchair if you need help.

NFC chip with a read only and writabale portions. the R/O part is the ID of the character and the writable part has the level achieved and a few other pieces of info. i've bought used skylanders from gamestop and they were leveled up a little

doesn't register to an account or anything like that

So can you use a kit to build "anything" with it and then it gets "scanned" into the game? or do you just build the one setup, like a model, and then that get's scanned?

I would think a something that allows you to build what you want, and then to have that scanned into the game, would be interesting.

Maybe MS, and possible along with it's Hololens, could do something like that with Minecraft (since the opposite might be true, that is, build on the PC, then "play" with it's holographic version).
