At least they're playing it smart, judging by the server status. Had they made the whole thing one giant download on release day and the servers instantly overloaded, TV movies would have been made about the carnage that ensued in the wake of the spastic "got to have it the second before the actual second it is released, enabled by some sort of time-dimensional shift" zombies.

Looking at the content server's use, one can see a significant increase in bandwidth usage at about the time it was released, so I guess they're getting hammered. Funny thing is, I wasn't even planning on preloading it just started Steam to play some CS:Source and there it was.

50% done after 1.5 hours... kinda slow too (averaging about 300kb/s.)

From what I've read so far (and it makes sense seeing how the current CS/CZ/HL work) once you have the entire HL2 preloaded, you would simply enter you retail CD key into Steam and HL2 would be ready to play -no need to shuffle the x-amount of CDs that may ship with HL2.

This gives me an idea: why not, as a backup option, simply burn the HL2 file(s) onto a DVD/CD and use that, instead of reinstalling the whole game? If you look at your Steam directory, you'll notice that all the games you have installed are a single, large file in a proprietary format, which only Steam can access.

Sure beats reinstalling/downloading all that content again.

It's totally feasible and I don't see why it wouldn't work unless there's some sort of file association/registry work that happens so that if you did do that, and then tried to 'reinstall' it by just moving it back it wouldn't work. Or maybe an anti-piracy deal that does something like that (I have no clue how it would work though).

Sure, they have to pay for bandwidth, but I'd like to see the price reflecting the aforementioned things that they WON'T have to figure into the equation.

BTW..got mine preloaded last night after I hit the sack.

IIRC, Condition Zero was ten bucks cheaper if you got it through Steam than off shelves when it was released... but that wasn't as highly anticipated as HL2, so who knows....

Much better than going to the store to get it. And I'd also imagine they could do it at 12:01am on release day.

It's just another way to get the game, that's all.

I'll probably buy the game via Steam, as I'm sure the ONLY difference between the Steam version and the retail one is the retail packaging and media.

I personally don't keep the packaging for more than 30 days (and no, I am NOT handing over my geek card!) and it's much easier to deal with a single, large file (as is the case w/ Steam) than having to swap CDs to (re)install the game.

Plus, it's MUCH easier to back up this single file (in a format proprietary to Steam/Valve) than to backup multiple disks to DVD+R.

I'm waffling. Not having the physical media makes me kinda nervous, but I never even looked at the Half-Life manual (maybe while waiting for it to install) and I haven't touched the CD since Steam came out, so I may give Steam a try.

The CD-Key is going on a piece of paper in my fire safe though, you bet your ass. -- View image here: http://episteme.meincmagazine.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif --
