There is no upgrade pricing in the App store. So you pay full retail to upgrade. Which isn't too bad, because they're cheap and you get them for free when buying a new machine.

In the footer of https://www.apple.com/creativity-apps/ios/ it says:
"* GarageBand is free on the App Store for all iOS 7 compatible devices; additional GarageBand instruments and sounds are available with an in-app purchase. iPhoto, iMovie, Pages, Numbers, and Keynote are free on the App Store for qualifying iOS 7 compatible devices activated on or after September 1, 2013. See www.apple.com/ios/whats-new/ for iOS 7 compatible devices. Downloading apps requires an Apple ID."

I'm curious what those qualifying devices are.

So is it really free or the old Apple kinda sorta free?

By that I mean what they did with many applications back in the day, where you would get it free with your new computer (iPhoto, iMovie, etc.) but have to pay to get any significant new version.

Back in the day, due to my hardware upgrade cycle, I was running 4 yo versions of some of the applications. Mostly because I am crazy in thinking free should be free. Instead of free to start but not free a year from now.

Correct. I also got them free and I have a new iPhone 5... Ie. Not a 5c or 5s.

Pretty sure the copies of software that you got were still free, years or even decades after they were given to you for free.

My God, the sense of entitlement runs deep. You buy people a free beer and they grumble that it doesn't come with endless refills.

Honestly I found the presentation of all those apps underwhelming. It was rushed and the guy spent more time saying that there were many new features than showing any of them.

As for Numbers, there is one thing for which it's the best app I've ever seen: making character sheets for roleplaying games. Its ability to have several independent tables on the same page is a marvel for that. ;)

Oh please. Yes, they were initially free. Did I complain about that?

I merely stated that if you wanted to keep the software current, you either had to pay for a new version or spend thousands on a new computer. Either way, that is NOT free.

In what world do you live in where you expect software to have one release? Are you running Photoshop ver. 1? Still running Netscape 1.0?

FYI, iTunes is an example of how free is free. It comes free with hardware purchase and it stays free whenever there is a major update. Are people feeling entitled because they expect iTunes updates to be free? Please.

All I did was ask the simple question of whether it things will be free like iTunes or free just with a hardware purchase.

Its just Apple realizing that a lock in might as well be free, and that benefits us, I think. Plus, really, doesn't Android have Google Docs while Microsoft has Office (albeit home) for RT and WP?

I think this is great for everyone, and hope to see what MS and Google will do to one-up it. If you're going to commit to an ecosystem, might as well go with one that has the most perks you like! Well, so long as you have a way out if you decide to move on, and I think iWork can save to Office, no?

By that logic we should all have a new Windows Surface tablet that includes the entire Office suite, includes 200GB Skydrive, runs Flash, comes with free Skype calls, and generally enables all existing hardware like printers to simply plug and use.

IThats not what I meant, so I apologize if I wrote it poorly and thats what you got out of it.

Also, Skype, Office and Skydrive are on OSX and iOS (although Office does require an Office 365 sub), plus I can't think of any productivity apps that won't open Office. MS wants you on their software/service, and since Office makes more money than Windows? I don't think they care if you're using Windows or a Surface so long as you're using a licensed copy.

That's actually why I like MS right now - it doesn't matter what Im on. That said, Office 365 is overkill for many users, so free iWork makes a lot more sense. And, once you're hooked?

Lock-in might be too strong a term. Addicted, maybe? :)

Oddly enough I noticed that I could download GarageBand for free on my iPhone 4S, despite never having purchased it before. Perhaps they pulled it because it was only meant to be free with a new iOS device, like the other iLife apps.

GarageBand is free across the board, new machine or not. iWork is free if you bought a machine since October 1st 2013. Each part of iWorks cost $19.95 from the AppStore if you haven't bought a machine since October 1st.

All extra loops and voices etc used in GarageBand cost money and are in-app purchases.

My wife bought an MBA recently (since Oct. 1st) and I'm still trying to find out how to get the update for her. OSX is still installing and I hope it will be smart enough to do it automatically but I doubt it has the info to make that call. Previous versions of iWork will NOT upgrade to the new ones even after installing Mavericks.

During the Apple event I think they used the phras "completely rewritten". I wonder if this means there is a performance increase in Numbers like when you have too many cells. Everyone I know uses Excel on OSX instead of Numbers citing performance issues. My needs are a bit different (stats and very pretty graphs) so I use JMP and DataGraph, but my prior experiences with Numbers weren't that great.

Honestly, I think Apple needs to buy Omnigraffle Pro & incorporate it into Numbers as an additional feature. Then add in easier Applescripting.

Naming iPad Air - Apple always telecasts what it does before hand.

The mixing of programs between iOS and OSX.

MacBook Air with a A8 in a year and a half? Could be a game changer of price and expectations.

Personally, I think we'll see an iPad Pro (12"?) before we see a MacBook Air using ARM.

Old Comment: No, or at least this hasn't worked for me. I think the new updates may be end-of-life for disc-based iWork and iLife installs.

Correction: I was not able to update to the newest versions of the iWork apps (from my old '09 disc-based installs) until after I installed Mavericks. I was able to update to the latest versions of iPhoto and iMovie (also from an '09 disc-based install) before installing Mavericks.

If you have a disc install, it certainly recognizes it, but the new one is for pay for everyone AFAICT.

I'm annoyed though. There's a bug I reported years ago now with the typography panel that still hasn't been fixed. It's a bit sad when TextEdit has better text formatting than Pages, no? (try applying any feature from the typography panel)

Also, the contextual toolbar takes up a huge amount of space. The old inspector was nice and small and free floating and had more options (character spacing has been removed, for instance). Now it's mandatory stuck to the side of the window, except for the object arrangement section, which is a truly gigantic panel. What were they thinking?

I was having trouble with with 2011 Mac Mini and iWork I bought on DVD & the preinstalled iLife not updating.

Here's how I got it to update in through the app store.

Open App Store on your Mac if they don't show as an available update in the update tab and are not in your Purchases tab either, go to the Featured tab & click Account under Quick Links, enter your password when prompted, & click Reset all warning for buying and downloading at the bottom of this page, & click Done.

Check your updates tab & iWork & iLife updates should now appear, at least this is how I got it to work on my 2011 Mac Mini.

iWork is free with new Macs, but pay-ware for old macs.

If you already own iWork (the AppStore versions not the disc versions) this is a free update for those you already own.

If you own a disc based copy, I don't know. I'm pretty sure I paid to upgrade when the apps first went to the App Store.

In any event, once you own a copy of an App Store version iWork app (regardless of how you came by it), you can install it on every mac associated with your iTunes account, and it looks like free upgrades here on out.

In other words, its the same deal as iOS users are getting now.

Yep, I paid to upgrade Pages and iPhoto on my 2009-ish macbook to the app store versions last year and now the new versions show as free upgrades.
However, they both say 'requires Mavericks'. Can't upgrade to them if you're still running Mountain Lion.

This was simply not the case for me. I installed Mavericks, loaded up the Mac App Store, and all the new iLife and iWorks apps were available as free upgrades.

(Admittedly, I paid for the last versions. So maybe the rule is "only pay once". That is, if you got them free with a new Mac, you pay for the next upgrade. If you buy them, you never pay again. I'm not sure, but I definitely didn't have to pay for them today.)

To everyone wondering what to do with their disc based install for iWorks '09.
There seems to be a bug preventing an Update to the new Versions.

Here is what I did

1. Deleted the iWork 09 Bundle
2. Downloaded the iWork 09 Trial (available on the net)
3. Installed the trial
4. Open Mac App Store, and download the newest versions :)

Worked on my 2010 MBP, after updating to Mavericks.

The new Pages for Mac is awful. Most of the functionality has been ripped out (as compared to Pages 09), the interface is dumbed down, and the user is trapped in an awful unified window that wastes space and can't be broken out of.

The discussion boards on Apple and elsewhere are full of angry complaints and lists of removed features.
