Its time a general ICE thread.

Today ICE shot and killed 37-year-old poet Renee Nicole Good.
The mother-of-three was named by her mother Donna Ganger, who spoke to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune on Wednesday afternoon. 'She was probably terrified,' Ganger said.

The grieving mom denied reports Good would have been 'part of anything like' the protests against ICE that were taking place at the location where she was killed.

'That's so stupid,' she said. 'Renee was one of the kindest people I've ever known.

'She was extremely compassionate. She's taken care of people all her life. She was loving, forgiving and affectionate. She was an amazing human being.'

Good was a poet and mother of three children who grew up in Colorado Springs. She was married to a comedian named Timothy Macklin who died in 2023 and now lives in Minneapolis with her partner, whose named has not been shared.

The description of the shooting from AP
Videos taken by bystanders with different vantage points and posted to social media show an officer approaching an SUV stopped across the middle of the road, demanding the driver open the door and grabbing the handle. The SUV begins to pull forward and a different ICE officer standing in front of the vehicle pulls his weapon and immediately fires at least two shots into the SUV at close range, jumping back as the vehicle moves toward him.
Videos from multiple angles show the woman was no threat. She was not a target by ICE.

The mayor has responded with
To ICE, get the fuck out of Minneapolis.

The shooting takes place just 1 mile from where george floyd was killed.

Same as it ever was, hate for the other.
There is a centuries long strain going through the American right wing, dating all the way back through the Civil Rights movement, the Progressive Era, the Civil War and Slavery that some types of people aren't real Americans.

Starting with Reagan and Gingrich and accelerating after 9/11 this metastasized through the both news and entertainment media and became fully in conservative circles. And eventually into the mainstream.

It isn't just racial, sexual or religious minorities, but it is people who live in or near cities.

You see it all the time in the news media. When they go to take the pulse of "real" America, its always going to some rural or exurban enclave. They're rarely going to someone living in a major city, or even an inner ring 'burb.

People in cities are always "the other". It doesn't matter that it was the proverbial "pretty blonde white woman", she lived in a city and was therefore The Other.

That's a trait that seems to occur in all societies, which is depressing. In Australia, we had a government elected not so long ago on a three-word slogan: stop the boats.

According to Wikipedia, ICE is the largest and most well-funded federal law enforcement agency in US history. The obvious question is 'are American taxpayers getting value for money?' It is certainly true that some undocumented immigrants carry out criminal acts, but is the rate higher or lower than of the populace as a whole? Would those funds and resources be better spent on general law enforcement, rather than targeting immigrants?

From my limited perspective, it seems like undocumented immigrants do a lot of the unpleasant work that American citizens don't want to do. Deporting those people for the "crime" of not having the correct paperwork seems counter-productive in the medium to long term.

wtf is wrong with our country, I despair.
This is what they've always fetishized. They're ideal world comes from westerns. Might makes right. Just go ahead and shoot the bad people immediately.

They offered $50k sign up bonuses to get people to join, gave them no training, and put them on the streets with guns. They have no knowledge of the law and no training on how to be law enforcement.

Minnesota is not a stand your ground law state. At some point, plain clothed ICE agents with no badges who refuse to identify themselves are going to get shot and people are rightfully going to claim self defense. How does anyone know an ICE agent from a kidnapper or mugger?

Has anyone else noticed that reports of ICE shootings have eyewitness accounts saying aid is either rendered after a long time or not at all? Today it was reported as 15 minutes. Is there a pattern here of making sure whoever is shot gets dead?

Rendering aid has been a problem even for regular police. Fairly sure the recent ICE hires are even less trained than regular police. It is very likely that they are not even trained to render aid.

Not ICE rendering aid, allowing anyone to render aid. Articles from today state they refused to let anyone near the vehicle including someone who identified as a doctor.

Its important to remind these people that multiple innocent people who followed ICE's orders were sent to a prison in a foreign country and then tortured for weeks or months.
Obeying ice does not provide you safety.

The bottom line is, not following instructions isn’t a capital crime, and even if it were, that’s for a judge and jury of her peers to determine.

Though, if I’m to be sympathetic to Rep. Hunt’s line of reasoning, then perhaps we’ll all be fortunate enough one day for him to find himself with a rebellious streak at an inopportune moment.

That ICE agent needs to be arrested immediately.

People occasionally pipe up to defend ICE here so I am just going to beat the drum I've been beating for a while and I don't plan to stop. And the only thing I think needs revision here at all is that I said "deport" when I could have said "execute on the street".

The whole point of ICE is now to do unlimited violence to anyone, anywhere, for any reason, or no reason.

I previously pointed out here that because due process is where you assert your rights as a citizen, it is impossible to deprive anyone anywhere of due process without depriving citizens of due process.

This is a perfect example of that. ICE simply refuses to acknowledge a valid US birth certificate that was confirmed by checks with the issuing hospital as well as a considerable body of other evidence.

Any support for the idea undocumented immigrants should have curtailed rights is advocating to curtail citizen rights. There is no daylight between the two positions, they are the same thing. Anyone saying any form of "it should be easier to get rid of them" is always, always, always, talking about citizens because making that distinction in a durable way without due process is impossible. Anyone making that argument knows this. The reason they phrase the argument that way is because they want to be able to eliminate citizens they don't like but understand that the only way to implement that is to lie about it until the system is in place and scaled up enough that they can discover they don't accept the birth certificate of anyone that objects. If you respond to this stance in any other way than that they are 5 minutes from deporting you, whoever you are, wherever you live, whatever your legal status, then you are taking their side, but that will not spare you because fascism always devours its own.

In the videos I’ve seen the only instructions given to the victim were to “get out of here”, which she was clearly attempting to comply with.

Specifically MPR, which has decent reporting (especially of Metro events), said that a doctor was nearby and requested to give aid and was denied opportunity. Then emergency responders had to walk the last block in because ice vehicles were blocking the street.

Which brings up another point from eye witnesses. Allegedly this all started because an ice vehicle was stuck in the snow, they were not doing an enforcement action at that time and place. People had to get around them and witnesses say that she was given conflicting directions to leave the area but also to get out of her car. Then one of them tried to enter her vehicle and freaked her out and she tried to get out of there (which is notably following directions if she was actually instructed to leave).

There have been videos of ice vehicles getting stuck in the snow. It seems like in pulling in 2000 agents in from all over the country they probably got some overconfident idiots who don't know how to drive in snow covered MN. I've not seen any reports that this is specifically the case here, but I'm suspecting this is exactly what caused the situation here where the poor lady died. The fucking insanity of it all.

She was apparently new to the area too, for all we know she didn't know either.

Its plausible.

Last week was regular dustings of snow so they didn't bother every day, it compacted to ice over the week.

This week is overnight freezing rain.

The roads are pretty terrible, but... normal for wintertime in Minneapolis.

Reddit has a couple of videos of ice agents stuck in Minneapolis. They were mocking the agents for their ineptitude until this. Eye witnesses said an ice vehicle was stuck at/during this incident. The only point I intended to hedge on was whether it was someone from an area that wouldn't have the driving skills to deal with it (due to pulling in so many agents) that got stuck, or someone who should have known better.

Murderers.

This event is top news at the Guardian and reading it make my blood boil, specifically how they describe the woman, Renee Good, they just murdered and the surrounding events that lead to this catastrophe:

“In a post on X, the homeland security department (DHS) said the person was a “domestic terrorist” who “weaponized her vehicle” and attempted “to run over our law enforcement officers in an attempt to kill them”.

The department claimed several ICE officers were hurt, but said that they were expected to make “full recoveries”.

“An ICE officer, fearing for his life, the lives of his fellow law enforcement and the safety of the public, fired defensive shots. He used his training and saved his own life and that of his fellow officers,” the DHS post said.“

Americans, you truly have a sick society and it’s pretty clear who keeps the hate and poison flowing. I fear it might eventually come to terms between them vs you in a much faster pace than what I anticipated.

What a tragedy. RIP Renee.

The only domestic terrorists here are the Republican Party, Trump & his government, and their “Law” Enforcement. They should all be tried for treason, insurrection, abuse of power.

But who am I kidding? They’ll probably use this video to instruct new recruits on how to handle situations: “shoot first, let God sort it out…”.

ACAB. And these pseudo Call of Duty cosplayers called “ICE” are the worst.

The violence, the sheer depravity, is, unfortunately, the whole point.

ICE is literally set up the same way as the SchutzStaffel, i.e. the nazi special police. They're doing basically the same things, at a slightly smaller (but not that much smaller) scale. Treat them as such.

And when the inevitable Nuremburg 2 trial comes, these will be the people that will see justice and need to emigrate to random third world countries to get away from the stigma and be able to build any life at all. I have family that emigrated to Australia, and took 2 more generations before anybody acknowledged them again.

Not just murderers, terrorists. After all, the entire point behind this ICE crackdown is to make sure immigrants, whether here on a visa or not, as well as Hispanic Americans live in terror because Trump and his goons think that's why good politics. Which, of course, contains the definition of terrorism. So, is America getting it's money's worth, well, if you think terrorism is good politics, then I suppose ICE is doing it's job.

The terrifying thing about this incident is how bifurcated reality has become in an age of social media and AI. There are competing videos out there, and I have no doubt that we will see a Federal agency pass off a doctored video as the truth before this is over.

With traditional media stalwarts slowly capitulating to government pressure (CBS, WaPo) or under attack we may end up in a situation where either there is no referee for reality left standing with critical mass or no way for reality to reach the public as Americans retreat to their social media bubbles for affirming content.

Even just the comments section of the same videos, you can see the split between "it was an execution" and "she tried to attack an officer of the law with her vehicle and got what was coming to her"

It's because most people aren't sitting down and watching the video to draw conclusions. They likely were prejudiced by their news source of choice or more likely social media. On top of that political affiliations are now team ball in the social media age, where we pick our team and communicate congruence to the tribe (autocorrected to "suicidal" media - appropriate).

And on top of that you have a lifetime of conditioning to assign blame in "law enforcement" actions by default to the authority party or the powerless party.

But having the ability to trivially fake video content makes this 100x worse by giving people perfect proof that they are right and that anyone who disagrees is a malicious actor.

Also according to videos, multiple ICE officers gave different orders. Some to stop, some to go back, and some to get out of the car.

They rely on that confusion. It's part of their MO - confuse so they can justify killing. They just want to murder a person, they don't care about anything else.
