What was unprecedented was how quickly the search engine collapsed under the weight of SEO manipulation which renders the engine pretty useless....Google for being the best in search would be "unprecedented."
I'm in the same boat. I get that they're a monopoly but all my alternatives suck.Google's search business should be spun off like the Microsoft of old.
I just wish other search engines were as good as Google - I've tried switching multiple times - only to switch back
FWIW, I find duckduckgo very good, and use it almost 100% (only if a search comes up with nothing useful, do I use google, mostly to still get nothing useful).Google's search business should be spun off like the Microsoft of old.

The US government had argued that Google used these exclusive deals to block out competitors like Bing or DuckDuckGo
ETA: this was a civil case through, and I’m unclear on the implications of being found liable (not guilty) under section 2.Every person who shall monopolize, or attempt to monopolize, or combine or conspire with any other person or persons, to monopolize any part of the trade or commerce among the severalStates, or with foreign nations, shall be deemed guilty of a felony, and, on conviction thereof, shall be punished by fine not exceeding $100,000,000 if a corporation, or, if any other person,$1,000,000, or by imprisonment not exceeding 10 years, or by both said punishments, in the discretion of the court.
Huh? Microsoft didn't get broken up. It was under a consent decree for awhile but never really experienced any serious punishment for its antitrust verdict.Google's search business should be spun off like the Microsoft of old.
Google shits $100M. They'll need to do better than that if they're going to punish them. And I don't mean jail time. I mean business breakup.Section 2 is felony monopoly

Is anybody with better insight into the US legal system able to comment on whether that's $100m max total, or $100m per attempt to monopolise?Section 2 is felony monopoly

If Google stops doing default-search contracts as a result of this judgment, I think that'd be worst for Mozilla. Though they've plenty of cash on hand so it shouldn't be existential.Bye bye apple deal, maybe this will save the money

For a fine yes....but after the ruling the actions need to change and it opens the door for damages lawsuits. That is going to be huge."fine not exceeding $100,000,000"
Unless that fine is applied daily it sounds like Google gets off cheap
I have moved to kagi and have found it almost as good as "old-google", well worth the money.
You should probably take a look at Kagi, then. They use Google's search index, but actually cleans it up to avoid all the SEO spam. I've heard a lot of good things about them, but I can't afford to pay for a search engine, so I haven't used them myself.I'd subscribe to a good ad free search engine Goog...
I use paid Proton Mail, Google Workspace, Office 365, and postale.io.Incidentally, are there any email services out there (paid too- I'm fine w/paid) that offer security, privacy, and quality of service?
I'm looking at protonmail, but am curious what other options may exist.
Running my own sounds like a big task- I guess that depends on what I think 'big' means?
Google-"Don't be evil"
Well it depends. What happens next? Fines?
