Rando gaming thought of the moment:

Man, I can’t wait for Ace Combat 8.

I don’t know how many times I have to keep saying this - they don’t anthropomorphize the jets.
They fall in love with the steel and jet fuel and the and bulletproof polymer they use on the canopy. People trying to make it out to be jet-girls / jet-boys are making it less weird than what it actually is!

And besides, that’s just Ace Combat 7.
AC5 & 6 had different vibes entirely. Still anime as hell, but different vibes. I fully expect 8 to be Sports Anime w/Fighter jets or some such nonsense.

You would think slow burn horror fishing game would never be a combo worth plying

I mean, I would never think that. I hate fishing in real life, and I have hated every fishing minigame in every game that has forced me to play one. I don't think I will be playing Dredge.

But, the population generally? People love those dang fishing minigames. I would expect it to be a really great thing for people who aren't me.

My brother and I put some time into it last night. As huge fans of Bungie's previous titles, we both found it to be a little disappointing.

The game runs well on my PC (4080 Super, 5800x3D), but the art style isn't my cup of tea and the UI (particularly the menus) has a sort of friction to it that I found to be grating, if that makes sense.

As far as gameplay is concerned, the movement is slower and more deliberate than Bungie's more recent titles, and you have a stamina bar that is rapidly depleted when sprinting. The shooting feels good. The game has heroes/classes that have unique abilities (handheld shields, invisibility, etc.) on fairly long cooldown timers.

The PVE enemies are relatively interesting the first few times you engage with them (or avoid them), but I have yet to fight anything that mirrors the quality of the encounters of the Halo and Destiny franchises. The loot seems to be mostly worthless junk with technobabble descriptions that are automatically sold when you successfully extract. Weapons, ammo, consumables, and shields seem to be pretty scarce.

PVP encounters can be frustrating due to the game's low TTK, so an enemy team getting the drop on you means almost certain death, at least at this point in the game's life cycle. Future gear and builds may change this, but that remains to be seen.

The game also has some skill trees/upgrades that I haven't had time to really interact with yet.

The game has factions and optional contracts/quests that seem to be telling an overarching narrative, but the game is mostly aimless wandering while scavenging for the aforementioned loot.

Perhaps I'm just not a fan of the extraction genre, but I have a hard time envisioning this game achieving the longevity of some of Bungie's previous titles. I hope I'm wrong.
I've played the game for several more hours and I just want to say that my initial judgement may have been too harsh. I've now had the chance to dive more fully into the factions, contracts, and upgrade trees, and I'm enjoying the game. There's a good chance I purchase this one, but I still worry that most players will bounce off of the game.

I've been playing RESSSSSSSSSSSSIDEEEEEEEEEEEENT EEEEEEEEEEVIL REQUIEM and while the game balances both 7 and 2/3/4 Remake's gameplay well with separate narratives, this game is so fucking ridiculous at times I feel like its an Eric Andre skit.

COMPLETE GLOBAL SATURATION! COMPLETE GLOBAL SATURATION! COMPLETE GLOBAL SATURATION!

This isn't even the most ridiculous moment. I fucking love it.

That being said there are moments where I'm wondering how Grace didn't flunk out of Quantico with the sheer lack of common sense on display.

Ah. Then I take it you have yet to come across Tank Dating Simulator. My oldest son bought that as a joke, and I didn't say anything when I saw it in his Steam library, but I did roll my eyes to myself that that's even a thing.

That’s still anthropomorphizing the tanks. It’s a fairly common trope, has been for a long time. It’s also part of how parts of Japanese culture fetishizes the WW2 Axis powers, but I digress.

Imagine that same game. Now remove all the girls and their dialogue, so all that is left is the protagonist flirting with a silent piece of metal.

Now, to be perfectly frank? None of that happens in Ace Combat 7. None of it. Ace Combat 7 is largely about prison labor and how fucked up it is… at least at first.
I’m just so far down this joke whirlpool that I have to make it now, even when it’s patently not true.

Do those games have a custom launcher or something? Because they haven't even broken into six digit all-time peak.
Tarkov may have been that big at some point, and it used its own launcher until recently, but it's been bleeding players for a while due to cheating, slow updates, and other drama so numbers right now probably aren't great. Tarkov is kind of the PubG of extraction shooters, it was first and got the momentum going but given the option most people who like the genre would rather play anything else. Granted, Trarkov had a really long period with no competition and they basically squandered it instead of locking down their position.

I posted a little while ago about picking up Dead in Antares. I'm about 30 hours in now, and I have to say that I'm starting to lose interest; and unfortunately I didn't finish before WoW Midnight consumes my life again.

It's not a bad game. It's an incremental improvement over the previous titles, but after the initial vibe of settling back into a comfy routine... it feels a little too comfortable. The gameplay and overall exploration is almost identical, which just leaves the characters and story; which just isn't quite feeling deep enough to hold my interest.

It also falls into the late-game micromanagement trap, where you've stabilised enough that the threat of failure is (mostly) gone, but you still have to micro the daily schedule because things can snowball badly if you let things slip.

I think it's going in the "Well yes, I did enjoy it and would recommend this, but not unreservedly" group.

Ok, that makes more sense. I've been wondering when the romance starts.

FYI, I'm finding Ace Combat 7 frustrating, but I'm still playing. We'll see how long that lasts.

I turned the accessibility options and difficulty to full God mode, essentially, for the last couple of missions. I decided that insta-fragging the enemy was a perfectly acceptable way to complete that game after many hours in the trenches.

I finally had about 7 hours in the Marathon Sever Slam before it closed.

The environments are too bright and I had trouble figuring out which objects I could interact. The limited weapons were OK and were pleasing to use like in Destiny 2. The UESC enemies were rather tough. It felt like playing Ultimate difficulty Destiny 2. They made good use of shields and took cover well. All players are rather squishy and PVP engagements get over pretty quickly and I managed to kill other players only 2 times while dying numerous times. I only used equipment from the free kits. It was easy to get ammo and occasionally weapons.

I have played a lot of Destiny 2 in the last 2 years. I stay as f2p player for majority of the year and buy the full year content near the end of the expansion cycle if I liked how the game played at that moment. Currently I am still f2p. Unless Bungie delivers a miracle in June, I will remain a f2p Destiny 2 player.

The 7 hours I spent on Marathon are not enough for me to get a feel of how the game will fare long time. So for now I am just going to observe and will look at buying it on sale if the game still exists at the end of the year.

So, super odd combination of stuff. When I look at this, I get two voices in my head.

One is "Not a Pound For Air To Ground" who's got roughly an hour of video on everything good and bad about this plane, because of course he does. That's an interceptor, and he "does" interceptors. Heh.

He'd CRY. Putting the wings at damn near 90 degrees AoA? YOU STOPPED. Why did you STOP? You're an INTERCEPTOR!

I'm not an expert by any means, but, umm, MiG-31? The shape of the twin tail makes me think -31, and the -25 is so brick build slab sided you can't even pretend to make curves out of it. And I can't really think of anything else that feels like that vertical twin tail section and is Russian. Sukhois have protuberances betwixt the engines.

What idiot put the fuel tanks on the outboard pylons and the missiles inboard, well, anime artists vs reality I guess :p

The other voice is Tabs, the DCS guy. He's got some Hardbass lined up, but there's no engine intakes, so she's falling out of the sky, and Earth's K/D ratio increments by one and he doesn't even get to play the music.

I think I actually see the engine nozzles in the "backpack" coming off her waist, but the intakes are jammed into her back.

And then Tabs avoids some trees and puts 3 seconds of gun into her while she fights the compressor stall.

Maybe I'm playing the wrong game, but when I see that, I think "Brrrrtttt".

Reminded why I kept quitting Terraria.

It kind of loses its... anything interesting when you get to the end of things. It's fun for the most part still but there's a whole lot of chore to do to get anything. And whole sections of the game seem to just sweep by quickly for no apparent reason. Cobalt only exists so you can mine Orichalcum so you can mine Titanium. There's barely any variance in the armor or gear to make a reason to really play them. I spent four hours yesterday farming Warrior's Emblems which just would not drop from the Wall of Flesh.

It's fun, sure... but I'm just not having fun anymore. It's remarkably weighty, but extremely shallow.

You don't gotta be like that. I mean, we're all calm here, right? Sure, you dropped into the middle of a conversation and then flew off the handle without putting in the smidgeon of effort it would have taken to understand what's going on, but I don't think anyone's too bent out of shape about it.

I lost track of everything except the part where I always stall out in Terraria at the mechanical bosses now, too.

Every few months I get hit with Exanima recs on youtube. It's vaporware that you can play... I was rooting for it because it seemed like it bridged the divide between Ultima 7 and Ultima Underworld (with a touch of Die by the Sword). It's one of those things that could have been epic had some AAA studio worked on it instead of Highguard or whatever failed this month. With enough resources stuffing a world like that with detail, it'd have really been something to experience instead of a source of occasional micro-memes.

After getting to Act 2 in NG+ Expedition 33 and realizing I'm bored again I decided.. Fuck it, let's buy Menace and see how that plays.

I should also note that I am currently sick with some sort of plague that is absolutely ruining my ability to think clearly or remember much of anything, so..

.. I guess wish me luck at playing an unforgiving (from what I understand) turn-based tactics game?

:D

(Actually I'm going to bed to sleep for hopefully 8 hours before I get up early for work which somehow always picks up when I'm sick)

Question.
If you were bored with it by the time you finished the normal game, what on earth made you think playing the same game over again would make it better?

That feels an awful lot like a sunk cost fallacy.

Speaking of Ultima, Majuular has a U8 retrospective up:

View: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W4h1GIw32UU

Favorite bits:

"The avatar was just a little bit keen on flipping that lever in the trolley problem"

"the metal pentagram token was the first box include that actually had efff-all to do with Ultima or even the game it was in."

The "what was happening in the industry in 199x" bit ran on and on for my tastes.

I have a lot of fondness for the first two or three days I spent with U8. The setup was great, raiding balconies with clever jumps was cool, and I dug the atmosphere and vibe. Then there was everything else. I'm on board with it being both a bad game and a bad ultima.

Ultima 9 was only the second time I had jumped off of my favorite series back in the day -- I had skipped Super Castlevania despite being a huge Belmont nut because I knew $70 for a game I'd probably beat in one sitting wasn't a good deal given my high school finances. Turned out being a good decision. Letting someone years later borrow, forever, my SOTN disc, however, was not.

Because I got bored, but then I came back and wasn't.

A lot of stuff can get boring if you do it for too long, but if you take a break and come back it's fun again..

As well, I wasn't bored by the time I finished the game; I was having fun, and that's why I wanted to give NG+ a go. I got bored shortly after Act 2 in my first playthrough too (although for different reasons).

I remember Sui Generis being a pretty fantastic idea, it still is. It seems that the devs are still updating Exanima via an experimental build, but they've got the attention span of a gerbil inhaling pixie sticks through both nostrils at once and going back for seconds. 11 years of this being in development is, well, a bit much. I might dip into it anyway, because it's still such an interesting thing mechanically.

Sony to PC: "Screw you guys, I'm going home!"

View: https://bsky.app/profile/jasonschreier.bsky.social/post/3mgafq7tiw22q

There's a gift link to the full story in Jason's post.

Short version is that their single player in-house games will be staying exclusive going forward. Ghost of Yotei and Saros will not be seeing PC releases.

In addition to muddled messaging (Sony's PC ports had inconsistent release dates), they're wary of their games ending up on a next gen Xbox that can "play PC games". This ignores the licensing deals for console titles that precludes them being run through emulators, though perhaps Microsoft has a way to skirt that issue and still allow access to Steam? Anywho, they don't want a PC port of a first party title running on an Xbox "console".

Third party titles published by Sony (Death Stranding 2 as an example) can still be multi-platform.

Jason added that part of the reason for this shift is that Sony sees a 30% cut of every digital sale on their platform. The console gets you in the door, then they get 30% of anything you buy on the digital storefront. They want to keep that revenue.
