So has anyone actually bought anything from the epic games store or did we get just the freebies?

I've noticed that I did not buy a single thing on there and any games on the Epic launcher have all been bought elsewhere

Not even the lure of free games has pushed me over the activation energy required to create an account on a new service. My backlog is already huge, and I feed it too often as it is without adding freebies in there.

I just can't be bothered to get the freebies... I even have an Epic Games account thanks to dabbling in Unreal Engine some years back. There's more inertia now with a Steam Deck, because I don't feel like going through the setup for other storefronts.

I do still claim and buy games on GOG to play on my PC or laptop, though.

I bought an Ubisoft game on EGS once on deep discount and likely loss to Epic because I knew it would active on UPlay anyway. Aside from that Alan Wake II is the only thing I've ever caved on. I claim the freebies in case there's any advantage to the devs, but haven't done much with the library. Most of it I end up with on other platforms anyway.

Random thought: What video games had movie adaptations which in turn had video game adaptations? As in, new video games either based on the movie or where the movie is canon in the video game universe?

The Street Fighter video game had a (awful) movie, and the movie had an (even worse) video game. And Lego built an empire on making video game adaptations of movies which then became movie adaptations of video games.

What other game-film-game movements happened? Did any of the Marvel video games use MCU actors' likenesses? Or were they all based on Marvel comic book lines?

Yeah. EGS I have never bothered with. Had Steam, and occasional GOG already, so that's what I'm sticking with
That's pretty much where I'm at; I had EGS installed very briefly and then got rid of it.

My preference used to be GOG, but the siren song of the Steam Workshop has pulled me back that direction of late. If a game has Workshop support, I'll usually buy it from Valve.

I recently tried the GOG Galaxy launcher, and man, that thing is just lousy. I had been downloading offline installers, and I think that's what I'm going back to. I mean, the stupid program usually doesn't even start on the first attempt. It usually takes two tries to even launch it.

Was "Prince of Persia: Forgotten Sands" tied into the "PoP: Sands of time" movie? They both came out the same year, even though the movie was nominally based on the 2003 game.

I definitely remember a coordinated marketing push. But I don't think the two really had anything to do with each other, story-wise.

Matt McMuscles' series "What Happened?" had a good episode about this train-wreck of a game, as well as a medium-dive review of the game itself in his series "The Worst Fighting Game." I highly recommend them if you want to learn more and have a good laugh at the same time!

Galaxy used to auto start up pretty well, then Windows 12 24H2 happened. Now it's been crappy, and the entire troubleshooting process is do an uninstall, reinstall, and pray to the nameless ones.

I think I bought only two games on Epic. One was Rebel Galaxy Outlaw and the other was the complete edition of The Walking Dead.

At the time I did not realize they would eventually come to other stores.

For a long time I skipped the freebies from EGS just because I did not want to deal with another store. But lately I have been grabbing the occasional free title.

I prefer to buy on GOG, or second on Steam. So in a few cases I am waiting for the move to GOG. In other cases I have picked up the freebies on GOG that I already own elsewhere. Because why not?

I haven't had that particular problem yet, but Galaxy is a little bit shit of a client. It's worse if you try to take advantage of the promise of it being a universal launcher for all your games, and you've got to go digging around the rest of the internet to get games from those little-known platforms like EA, Ubisoft, or Steam to work properly.

Yeah, I'm really unimpressed with it. The UI is lousy, it's slow, and it's not reliable about launching. After this long, it should be in much better shape than it is.

With GOG's reported money troubles, I just don't think they're managed very well. Their website works fine, but there's really no excuse for the launcher to be as bad as it is. It looks good, and that's about all I can say in its favor.

GOG always seems to forget the Ubisoft connection for me.

It doesn't play well with Game Pass either as it can't tell what you own vs what's available or dropped from game pass, and what's only available on console. They also think the latest Forza Motorsport (2023) is the OG Xbox game, and I can't figure out how to switch it. Not deal breakers, just annoyances.

I've probably claimed 90% of the Epic freebies, and only bought a couple of actual titles. The telltale Expanse, I think AssCreed Valhalla and Star Wars Squadrons too. Oh, maybe Death Stranding if that wasn't a freebie.

Hmm, my only Epic purchases? Alan Wake 2. Hades, because I was in on day one of early access.

...
...

I think one or two others that were massively on sale? Immortals of Aveum was one of those, I think. What a waste of time that game was.

But no, it's all freebies outside of a very limited selection where I didn't feel like waiting for any exclusivity deal to expire.

Because I play Fortnite (don't judge - I purchased it for myself and my wife when it was back in Alpha. It's a completely different game now.), I get some benefits on Epic, and I've bought perhaps a dozen games. Some of them, like Railgrade, were interesting and fun. Some, like Paranoia, got refunded (although that one was auto-refunded when Nacon was forced to yank it from the stores due to their license actually expiring before they released the game).

Right now, I've got a little over $10 in store credit, so I'm willing to throw it at things that I might otherwise not buy.

The only game I bought on Epic was John Wick Hex which I've never downloaded or played. 🤦
I tried it on my friend's Playstation, it's an interesting game conceptually. The choice to do turn-based strategy means you don't need crazy twitch FPS reflexes to pull off maneuvers, but at the end of each level it shows a "real time" rendition of your run and the animations make it look very stilted and janky. Still a fun game that lends itself to replaying, but an odd decision for adapting an IP mainly centered around high-octane gunfights.

I'm still yet to purchase any games on EGS, though I did install it because my friends wanted me to play Fall Guys and I hadn't bought it on Steam before Epic bought it out. I've collected a couple freebie games, but I have yet to actually install or play any of them.

You know what GOG design choice I really don't understand? When I am looking to see if they sell a game, I search for it, and up comes a result. It takes me to a page that's like, "Yup, that there's a game that sure do exist!" No link to buy it because they don't sell it. It would be a lot more useful if they acted like Steam and just didn't return search results for that title.

(Checks the launcher) I've bought 3 games out of the 149 in my library: Saints Row 3 remaster back when it was an exclusive, Assassin's Creed Odyssey (was on sale + I think an extra $20 coupon), WH40K Rogue Trader (was 30% off).

As long as you remember to run the launcher as administrator so it doesn't make you re-login the launcher is as easy to use as Steam. I prefer Steam but if something is free or at a much better discount then the Epic store is OK.

I have a half-dozen items I've bought on Epic. I bought Satisfactory when it was first released, and was an Epic exclusive. I do not regret it at all.

When they first started doing game giveaways, I picked up everything, but after a few months, I decided that my catalog does not need bloat of games I won't ever play, so I'm more selective these days.

I'm being selective - and still pick up almost everything.:) I think the interesting question is, how many free games have people actually played on Epic? Personally, I prioritize Steam purchases, and Game Pass - so even as I have many Epic freebies I'm interested in, I have played maybe 2% of them.

Time for another AGDQ - kicks off today with the pre-show at 1030 CST and the first game at 11. I’ll have it on in the background for most of the week but I always look forward to these, even if it isn’t as exciting/novel as it used to be.

I still mostly just catch the VOD’s at my leisure on Youtube. But it’s still my favorite gaming thing that happens twice a year.

I got to watch an Ori & the Blind Forest randomizer. Brilliant. Any similarity between what I saw and the way I play is mere coincidence.

Tonight's Wind Waker run was fun-- the progress that's been made on breaking that game in the last couple of years is really impressive. As is seeing someone pull it off live (and only about 15 minutes off world record pace at that).

I love when speedrunners get help from random people who aren't even speedrunners. (That whole Tingle Tuner thing.)
