Sort of sad when we are at the point when I see a headline involving a head of a federal administration leaving their agency, my first thought is were they incompetent or too competent at their job.

And the answer is...yes?

Makary had reportedly been resisting the sign-offs out of concern that the kid-friendly flavors could again entice youth use and addiction
Public health experts, meanwhile, criticized Makary for changes to the FDA’s vaccine reviews under his watch, which aligned with Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy’s anti-vaccine agenda.

I've never smoked a cigarette in my life. I've never vaped tobacco in my life. But we used to smoke hookah shisha back in my college days. It was fruity, fun, delicious, and social. And I refused to ever buy a hookah myself because I knew exactly how insidious that was. I view the vapes in a similar light, only they're cheaper/easier to get and use. I completely understand people wanting to have this as an option, I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't have some fun smoking hookah right now. But seriously? No. Flavored tobacco just shouldn't be available. Analog or digital they're still just death sticks.

I'm a little rusty on my Warhammer 40K lore - how many steps removed is "Dr. President" on the path to "God Emperor"?
Pretty far. At best you're looking at someone fairly high up in the Administratum, or maybe a planetary governor. That's an easy crowd to get lost in.

Jokes aside it's wild that this guy appears to have what passes in this administration for a vestigial spine, comparatively. Not enough to be a genuine public health advocate, but the bar is so low that even offering token delays in rubber-stamping industry-favored policy is... well it's not something anyone should get praise for in better times.

Overall tobacco use levels might not change all that much (the flavor bans seem to have produced a decrease in vaping but an increase in cigarette use), but popcorn lung diagnoses might.
Kinda hard to get popcorn lung without oils, which aren't present in nicotine vapes. In fact, this is only a problem for black market cannabis vapes that aren't regulated, further evidence that legalization isn't only a good idea, it's life saving.

Tobacco flavored tobacco should be available!

Hard as it is to swallow, it sounds like Makary somehow was under the impression that being the head of a federal regulatory agency in this administration should involve some measure of, you know, regulating. Did he really not understand that his job was to act as a mouthpiece for Trump talking points and a rubber stamp for the agenda of whatever corporate lobby he talked to that morning?

Minor typo fixed at the end...

"The Wall Street Journal reported that Trump had called Makary over a weekend to scold him for not moving fast enough to authorize flavored vapes, particularly menthol, mango, and blueberry flavors from the Los Angeles manufacturer Gla[n]s."

(AKA "kid-targeting dickheads")

If you search Freakonomics and Marty Makary you can find the last podcast he did where he twisted himself like a Pretzel trying to justify kooky ideas from RFK and Trump to stay as head of the FDA. So so sad. Makary was someone I looked up to until he sold his soul for the job fooling himself into thinking he could do a real job while pleasing his idiotic masters. So so sad.

Smoking/vaping anything is stupid. But vapes are less offensive to be around. If people must be allowed to allowed to use these drugs in public (and frankly I don't see why they must be), I'd rather have to put up with people sucking flavored USBs than the persistent, infuriating reek of combusting tobacco or weed.

I am unequivocally in favor of the phased-in complete cigarette ban like the UK is doing and would like to see it expanded to vapes as well, and implemented here.

I frankly do not give a flying fuck if people want to do drugs, In theory, but I should not have to breathe pollution because of it. Similarly, I don't care if people want to have headphones that can go to 180 dB within their ear, but I don't wanna have to fucking hear it.

Smokers, litterers (smokers often, if not always, fall in this category, too), people who blast music, people with loud exhaust on their cars, people who use speakerphone in public, all just slightly different forms of shithead with main character syndrome.

The only tobacco product in vapes is nicotine. Nicotine doesn't cause death.
Um. Nicotine is highly toxic. Like 1 mg/kg toxic to humans. It's hard to get that dose by vaping or smoking, but to say it doesn't cause death is just not accurate. Labs use some serious protective gear when working with the pure stuff, FYI.

People using speakerphone in public need to be bumped higher up that list. I think I'd rather sit next to a smoker.

“We took their bribe. If we don’t deliver people will start to think we can’t be trusted.”

I suspect your comment is related to this piece in the article:

Trump had called Makary over a weekend to scold him for not moving fast enough to authorize flavored vapes, particularly menthol, mango, and blueberry flavors from the Los Angeles manufacturer Glas. The FDA authorized those flavored products days later and issued a new policy that would make it easier to market flavored vapes.

Has anyone seen the "Will Kill People for Money" coffee cup amid the glitter cluttering the Oval Office?
