I was pretty sure they already had this and yea - they do.
The FBI runs a License Plate Reader program to facilitate LPR information sharing with and between its law enforcement partners. Specifically, through the National Crime Information Center (NCIC), the FBI maintains a hot list of vehicle data against which law enforcement agencies can compare their LPR data. The NCIC is operated by the FBI's Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Division and serves as a clearinghouse of "records contributed by and accessible to criminal justice agencies nationwide. Its purpose is to enhance officer and public safety, and it has been called the lifeline of law enforcement."

Maybe in your hand (and lots of others), but not mine. I carry a dumb phone, when I carry one at all.

yeah; I have a smartphone but 90% of the time it is in my desk or glove compartment.

If they want to watch me pedalling at the gym listening to audiobooks, I can give them the dates and time; they are the same most weeks.

Yeah, but a good 95%+ of the people you encounter have cameras in their hand, so it's a moot point.

It's like back when I was paranoid about having a car that could be remotely hacked. Yeah, I drive a stick shift. Yeah, my car doesn't have self-steering. If something seems to be going pear shaped, I smack the gearshift into neutral or hit the clutch. Good for me.

If the government wants to Michael Hastings me, they'll just hack some Stellantis or General Motors rolling cybersecurity liability automobile and swerve it into my lane at the last moment. Meanwhile, I like being able to take telephoto pet and wildlife pics, so, an iPhone it is.

🤷‍♂️

I don't know about anyone else, but I'm growing a little weary of living in the future. Dreamed of Star Trek, ended up with...something else.
It's often forgotten that the Star Trek on TV was the result of a tumultuous 21st century filled with war, tyranny and general societal collapse that was only salvaged because someone managed to make contact with the Vulcans. Up until the point, the world was on the verge of apocalypse.

So unfortunately for the Trekkies, things are pretty much playing to the timeline. Hopefully someone out there in the void finds us and is benevolent.

We managed to skip the Eugenics wars, at least. Star Trek future followed some real horrors. We're not out of hope yet...

What I want is a hologram system which I can attach to my car.

Then, whenever I'm in the mood, it will make my car appear to the rest of the world as an M1 tank, a farm tractor, a surfboard riding a tsunami, or whatever else I'm in the mood for at the moment—and my car proper simply disappears as a "car" and becomes to the rest of the world whatever hologram I am projecting.

Thus, no concern for LPRs or other "gubmint" spyware.

Well, I can't dream, can't I??

It's cameras in your hand, watching you at all times, carried voluntarily.

And? Google et. al. just want to shovel lame-ass advertising in your face. Yeah, it sucks. But the FBI? They want to throw you in jail for saying bad things about Trump. Or for even not-so-nice things about Trump. Or for voting for someone other than Trump. Or living in a blue state.

Kind of a big difference there bucko.

I'm obviously not lookin forward to what our man K$sh has in mind; but the really ominous thing about this RFP is that what is being asked and what is being offered is basically an outright statement that it already exists.

If you had to do any significant buildout $36 million dollars for 70% coverage would be absurdist comedy. That number only makes sense if it's basically onboarding and portal customization and maybe turning 'opt-in' to 'opt-out' in a few locations to reach 70%.
