I seriously doubt Fort Bliss (or White Sands Missile Range, for that matter) are the cause of this. They've both co-existed peacefully with El Paso International for decades. It's not like military maneuvers are unusual at either installation. The abrupt notice from federal officials, offered without explanation, spurred large amounts of speculation on social media about the nature of the closing. Possible explanations include military operations near Fort Bliss, which has its headquarters nearby and facilities in nearby southeast New Mexico. It is also possible there is a national security threat or border operations in nearby Mexico.
I'd put money on unrecorded ICE deportation flights en masse so that they can bulk deport detainees to unsavory places without witnesses. The abrupt notice from federal officials, offered without explanation, spurred large amounts of speculation on social media about the nature of the closing.
Yeah, it's all speculation for now. Facts are hard to come by. And unfortunately it is not like this administration has built up a large reservoir of trust through honest and straightforward dealings with the public and media. An El Paso city council member on Reddit says the local military wasn't informed.
The Federal Aviation Administration lifted the temporary closure of airspace over El Paso on Wednesday morning, abruptly reversing course after grounding flights hours earlier for what officials said would be 10 days.
“There is no threat to commercial aviation,” the agency said on social media. “All flights will resume as normal.”
Officials offered conflicting explanations for the brief shutdown, which was in place for less than eight hours. Sean Duffy, the Secretary of Transportation, said Mexican cartel drones breached U.S. airspace, prompting the temporary closure of airspace over El Paso.
Another person familiar with the situation had described the cause of the shutdown as a test of anti-drone technology. It is unclear if the closure was directly related to the presence of drones or how the technology was deployed.

Representative Veronica Escobar said that while the El Paso restriction had been lifted, the restriction for southern New Mexico airspace remained in place. Asked if she knew the reason for the continued restriction, she said, “I do.” But she declined to elaborate.

Representative Veronica Escobar, an El Paso Democrat, said in a news conference that the explanation citing Mexican drones crossing the border as the reason for the closure was “not the information that we in Congress have been told.” She said that there was no current or past threat to the area. “There’s no threat. There was not a threat, which is why the F.A.A. lifted this restriction so quickly,” she said. “The information coming from the administration does not add up.”
Most witnesses would be on the ground, not in the air. Plus, grounding everything except deportation flights would make them far more conspicuous.I'd put money on unrecorded ICE deportation flights en masse so that they can bulk deport detainees to unsavory places without witnesses.
I've participated in multi-week air defense exercises at Ft Bliss and the airport did not close. Something else is up, and it's not good.WTF.

The "national defense airspace" thing has Hegseth's stink all over it, though.
The restriction is only for 18,000 feet and under. It appears that at least some traffic is still being allowed in the area according to live ADS-B data. Several flight paths directly over ELP.

Or major ICE activity in the area. Closing the airport means fewer means of evading them.I'd put money on unrecorded ICE deportation flights en masse so that they can bulk deport detainees to unsavory places without witnesses.
Planes may be grounded, but air traffic control and people working at the airport and living nearby can still observe what it going on.I'd put money on unrecorded ICE deportation flights en masse so that they can bulk deport detainees to unsavory places without witnesses.
Worse - Speedy Gonzales. What would constitute an emergency? Did Roadrunner invade from the south? Meep meep!![]()
I wouldn't doubt this. One of the things that's been clear with recent court cases is DHS/ICE is basically sandbagging court orders by playing whack-a-mole. Getting abducted people out of the state as quick as they can to make it hard for them to appear in federal court or be released. Bearing in mind, the only people who get federal court orders are documented and have legal papers.I'd put money on unrecorded ICE deportation flights en masse so that they can bulk deport detainees to unsavory places without witnesses.
If it was Hegseth, it would be WAR AIRSPACE. This is no time for defense. The "national defense airspace" thing has Hegseth's stink all over it, though.
Or law enforcement. Or military. There isn't even a carve out for medical flights, which I believe are typical.

But speculation is just that. Somewhat concerning though, given the 'assume the worst' position is tending to be accurate with this regime.
Rare seems to be understating it. After 9/11 airports were only closed for 3 days. I can't find a single record of airspace being closed anywhere over the US for more than that. We're in "unprecedented" territory. It is rare for airspace over a major airport to be closed for any extended period of time.
Fair point.Unless you are flying in a smaller plane, you need to go past DHS personnel to board a plane in the US. Weird trying to escape ICE by walking into their brothers.
