RAGE is creatively and mechanically bankrupt, but it sure is pretty

RAGE has a huge marketing budget and a beautiful engine, but it has nothing else going for it. The mixture of linear shooting and wasted open-world sequences creates an unsatisfying and often frustrating game.

Wow, what a scathing review Ben. I knew it wasn't going to get the same review as say Gears of War 3, but DAMN! Oh well, I'll check it out myself and see. While I'm certainly convinced you didn't like it, from what you've said I see no reason why I shouldn't.

At the end you say "Weak shooting" what do you mean? Could you elaborate? This is the one thing I expected id to get right. =/

And that is all? I was under the impression that these guys just put something together for the tech demo, and then they would add a great story and characters, but they seem to have forgotten that...

Wait, what do you mean with decrypting? And above all, why doesn't my dictionary recognizes "Decrypting" as a word?

Thanks for the review, saved me some cash as well. Though as soon as I saw the 9.5 EGM gave it I knew it had to be crappy. Obviously a purchased number, much like the 9.5 they gave Dead Island, at best a 7 game...

Thanks again :)

Why don't the PR people realize that having so many sites lying to us all the time is not good for future sales, or visits to the review site? Their corruption is absurdly obvious these days....

Based on prior iD releases, I was expecting as much... but the fact that they were acquired by Bethesda gave me a glimmer of hope that some of B's story telling skills would trickle down to Rage. But alas, hope sucks.

Just like Doom3... great engine, great tech demo, meh game. At least Doom3 was moddable so people could duct tape a light to the gun... since it wasn't supposed to have any character development... it didn't matter...

But a game billed as a cross between Borderlands and Fallout 3... sounded like a game that had character development and some plot... meh.

Oh well, at least Fallout 4 will have a nice shiny new Rage engine for its graphics. ;)

I completely get why you don't like it, Ben, but I'm a little disappointed at just how quick the review went. You don't touch on a lot of what folks like myself are interested in: The gunplay, weapons, enemies, animations, the various environments, the sound design, the overall package... Most folks knowledgeable about id's pedigree aren't going to be buying this for the story, surely?

I realize that you dislike the game and wanted to give us that message very quickly, particularly for those of us who are hyped for a new id game, but I can't help but feel as if you brushed over this one without really giving it much of a chance. To be frank, you're not giving your readers much to go on other than, "I didn't really like this game at all." It seems really disappointingly misleading.

I only wanted to bring this up because I have a healthy respect for your review style, even if I may disagree with you from time to time, but this was sort of awkward to see after watching Giant Bomb's quick look, which showed the game in an extremely positive light. Going from that to this rather brash brushover is jarring, to say the least.

I'd love to hear more of your thoughts or further explanation about the review if you don't mind!

B-b-b-b-but IGN gave it an 8.5 in their pre-release review! Such discrepancy between two ethical publications should be unpossible, right?!

/Sarcasm

Thanks for the review Ben. Glad I waited.

Electronic Gaming Monthly praised the game, giving it a score of 9.5/10. They stated that the game features impressive visuals, brutal and satisfying combat, fluid animations and advanced enemy A.I.

These two and this one:

At the end you say "Weak shooting" what do you mean? Could you elaborate? This is the one thing I expected id to get right. =/

Should I buy it? I guess I will.

Edit: messed with markup

Reasonable statement is extremely reasonable.

Once I get my new clothes, the mayor says I have to rent garage space and talk to the sheriff. So I do those things, but the sheriff tells me I can't have the supplies that need to be delivered unless my buggy has guns. To get guns, I need to talk to the guy at the race track. After talking to the guy at the race track, I'm told I need to speak to another guy to set up races for the slips to get the guns—when I find that guy, he tells me to speak to his guy so he can schedule the race...

So, I take it once you find the monsters you talk them to death? :flail:

Last two Id games have felt like tech demos IMHO. Glad I didn't buy although to be honest, with Battlefield 3 coming out, don't think I would be buying any new games in October/November.

I thought that too, until it became apparent DICE would punt squad mgmt. to EA and call it a day with a CoD clone.

I guess I'll just have to wait for Skyrim

I suspect there's fun to be had. A lot of those same criticisms could be levelled at Borderlands (which I loved): fetch quests, repopulating areas you've already played for a side mission, recycled enemies...

I'm going to keep an open mind.
Except Borderlands was fucking hilarious.

It has Squad management. It's just done via the Battlelog website instead of in-game.

Story? Huh? What story? I wasn't in for a story...

Let me repeat that, in case someone skipped the important part:
Most folks knowledgeable about id's pedigree aren't going to be buying this for the story, surely?

True, that. What story did the folks that enjoyed Doom, Doom II, Quake, Quake (-][, ]|[-Arena, -Wars), hell, even Wolfenshtein were looking for? Well, I can pretty much sum it up in 3 words: "Shoot the baddies". The bigger the gun, the better. As in, BFG-10K + Quad damage + vantage point = mass killings...

Those that were expecting Rage to be a RPG where... flat out wrong, or at least setting themselves for a disappointment. As for Rage being Borderlands / Fallout... ehrrr... who *invented* the post-apocalyptic shooter range again? Anyone? Yes... them.

Ben, I can totally understand your dislike, and why this isn't for you. I don't even enjoy straight shooters as much as I did in my 20s. But still, if you don't review this game on what it's trying to be good at, I hope you will forgive me for according little weight to your review...

If this game is supposed to be about shooting stuff... why are there characters in the game? Why is there dialog and a story in a game where they aren't supposed to matter?

See, that's my problem with this idea. I have no problem with a game designer that says "story doesn't matter" and then puts no actual story content in the game. What I have a problem with is a game designer who says, "story doesn't matter" then puts a story in their game!

If this game wasn't supposed to have a story, why not have it work like Quake or Doom? You're dropped in an area. Everyone there is waiting to kill you. Get to the other side.

No dialog. No character interactions that don't involve shooting something. No nonsense.

Putting a bad and tedious story in a game is worse that putting no story in it at all. Nobody complains about Tetris or Geometry Wars not having a story, because they clearly aren't supposed to. They also do not attempt to shoehorn a crappy story into their games.

Bad things in a game are bad, whether you wanted them there or not.
