Overall, I thought Sony did the best - they matched Microsoft and Nintendo with thier own motion sensing device. But to me, the difference was Sony announcing/showing games I have the most interest in.<BR><BR>Nintendo I think did the worst. Not as bad as last year, but not much better either. <BR><BR>Microsoft Natal was the big surprise, in terms of what they managed to show. But I am skeptical until they show games being played on it. The pre-made vid makes me leary that this is a paper launch. At least Sony had a live demo of their wand.

I want ModNation Racing! This game just looks like ultra fun. Creating cars, racers, and tracks all to share over the PSN. What a super cool idea. This is a game that my kid and I can enjoy together. I just know she is going to go nuts making her car and racer. This is a five star game no doubt.

Seemed like a really meh E3 to me. I thought there was a slim but real chance someone would pull a shocker and announce their next-gen console was coming in 2010 (or in Nintendo's case, maybe a real DS successor instead of a repackaging ala the DSLite and DSi).

Nintendo: *yawn*, again<BR><BR>Sony: I have to appreciate their cajones for announcing a $250 PSP and no word of a PS3 price cut/slim. Talk about full steam into the storm. The games didn't really appeal to me much, but I got the impression it was a good showing for their audience.<BR><BR>Microsoft: What a shameful pile of excess targeted at 12 year old boys. After firing most of the people at Microsoft that actually make games, even. I would be surprised if the money spent on the presentation wasn't enough to keep those studios running another year.<BR><BR>Everyone: I was alive in the 80s. I played those horribly simple atari games. Playing them again with my hands or feet, or by winking into a camera is not attractive at all. I don't care how many polygons or mumplemaps you use. Chase casual and nongamers at your own peril. If you neglect the core of your market, it will collapse.

Can I just vote for who did the worst? That would be Nintendo. A device which checks my pulse? And more of the same types of games we've already had? No thanks.<BR><BR>Both MS and Sony left most of the "I want" factor to third part developers. (Speaking of which, RB: Beatles isn't exclusive to MS, so why tag it "MS"? And I dunno for certain, but is GH: VH really a Sony exclusive?) As far as must-haves go, I think it would be Crackdown 2, Mass Effect 2, God of War 3, Uncharted 2, Ratchet & Clank, God of War 3, The Last Guardian, Assassin's Creed 2, anything Metal Gear and God of War 3 and probably others which I am forgetting. Oh... And God of War 3.

Microsoft: Somebody got the memo. The faceless masses like social networking and the idea of apps. Sure, it may not be "core" to the gaming masses, but it's a free expansion of your gaming console onto popular internet sites. Some say "oh, I'll never use that". I remember so many saying the same of facebook and twitter just a few years ago. Guess what, the trend is going the other way. <BR><BR>If Microsoft keeps adding these custom-designed applications, they'll make a very good name for themselves...or better yet, they could release tools to design apps for the 360 and allow users to add and remove them on their own. That alone would revolutionize consoles. I mean if you consider Xbox live games as stand-alone apps...aren't they really close already?<BR><BR>Plus, Natal. Looks like it could be more than just a game peripheral-- it could be a new way to control the entire experience. That, to me, is even cooler than the games themselves. A whole new way to interact with computers--in 3 dimensions. Cool. <BR><BR>Sony: Great games. Lots of amazing exclusives. Overall a phenomenal show. New PSP looks interesting. If you don't own a PSP now is the time to get one. Additional content and a bounty of big-name games coming your way (plus, more games tying in PSP/PS3 functionality). Solid, solid show. I mean the new project Ico alone makes me so excited. <BR><BR>Their hardware for motion-detecting looks nice...except that they aren't talking games. Without the idea of a full operating system integration, I (grudgingly) don't think it will have the same impact as Natal. It seems leaps and bounds above the Nintendo implementation, but almost EVERY Nintendo game is played on the Wii-mote. Not sure how many games Sony is planning. Are they adding backwards-compatability with it? Will future games be forced to have an option to use it. There are a lot of unanswered questions, and while the ability to wield two wands looks cool, I just don't see it as being as cool as full 3d body rendering. <BR><BR>Nintendo...man. I was REALLY hoping for something to make me just go "MUST.BUY. TWO." Most interesting bits of news was the new Metroid. Once again, Nintendo seemed to focused on their sales numbers to really worry about what their original fans are saying. Hey, whatever. They're going to sell millions of pulse meters to octogenarians, why listen to the people who grew up with Zelda. Sadly, this was...boring. Not horrible. Not spectacular. Just...a lot of buildup with no payoff.

I really, REALLY don't see the big hubbub about Natal. People, it's NOT going to work like the video.<BR><BR>Voice detection will go something like this:<BR><BR>(Some question)<BR>Seinfeld!<BR>Ooooh, sorry, "She smelled" was not the answer, the correct answer was "Seinfeld".<BR><BR>Now think about how bad it will be in a room full of people. Drunk people, even worse.<BR><BR>Now for the visual, they've done a hell of a lot, and the technology is pretty much there to back it up. But you know it's going to suffer the casual effect: tons of shit games to take advantage of it, and maybe a few good ones. It'll also pretty much become a novelty, where you show off to your friends that you can play a movie by waving your hands around. So basically it'll become a $200 piece of junk sitting in front of the TV while you play Modern Warfare 2 with a controller.

Yes, Natal is probably not going to work like it will in the demo movies. That doesn't mean it still doesn't have the possibility to result in some fun games. Just look at the Wii. The Wii also over-promised before launch. They threw out images of sword fighting and all sort of neat shooters. The reality ended up being waggle-fests and minigames. They only just now gained the sword fighting ability with the new addon. And up to now all the good 3rd party shooters have been on-rails.<BR><BR>So yes, Microsoft is probably going to disappoint the people that are really really excited about this. Still, it doesn't mean you can just discount it completely. Microsoft actually has a physical piece of hardware they're demoing with so unlike a lot of their concept movies this one has a shot of actually being released in some form in the future. I hate to say it but at least Microsoft seems to be trying to innovate here and not just blatantly copy someone else *coughsonysixaxismotioncontrollercough*

This technology wss demo'd at E3 a year ago and pretty much worked as advertised before Microsoft bought it so I would guess it still works just as well (or better.)<BR><BR>Anyway, I think the poll omitted some things.<BR><BR>Full current-gen game downloads, Last.fm integration, Netflix browsing and Instant Streaming 1080p movies were the best announcements as far as I'm concerned.<BR><BR>(And before you start crying "That'll never work!" I'd give it to microsoft easily with that amazing motion capture demo. But when is the last time they ever delivered on one of their promises ? They always eventually deliver something somewhat kind of what they originally promised, but its never what they promise initially.

After all the rubbish posted on Monday about how great MS's presentation was - it was with dubious speculation that I watched the live stream of SONY's press conference on Tuesday 2nd June at 7:00 (UK time). <BR><BR>Nintendo's press conference was little short of catastrophic - with nothing really innovative to show and hardly any new software - it was little wonder that the CEO didn't even bother to get on the stage. An utter disappointment for Wii owners. The only saving factor was that it was short.<BR><BR>MS had promised the world and delivered...well nothing really. Tony Hawk's new 'innovative board technology' had already been used by Wii - Shawn rider and snowboarding, to be more precise. It also didn't appear to be 100% safe and absolutlely no-use to anyone with a disability. Their tech demo of the new 'innovative camera' wasn't innovative at all - we have had it from year one - its called the PSEYE. Their presentation also showed that it wasn't very accurate either. Their software lineup was either already known stuff, or hastily added game annoucements of games that are still a very long way from completition (Crackdown2), you get the feeling they found out what Sony had to offer, and needed to add some extra punch, "lets annouce a crackdown2 and knock together a logo").<BR><BR>As for software...Well Kojima's decision to place a metal gear game with MS was a bit of a kick in the face - until we all realized that it was cross platform and also, that it wasn't MGS5, merely some crappy spinoff that Konjima has already seemingly washed his hands of!!<BR><BR>So in retrospect - M$ fired a few shots - but they were mostly blanks. Nintendo's gun still had the safety on.<BR><BR> <BR>So the worry was, that Sony was just going to hit us with exclusives we already knew about and little else. Boy, were we wrong. What actually happened probably turned the tide of the console war irreversibly in SONY's favour.<BR><BR><BR>Steering clear of firmware and other areas that are most likely going to happen anyway.. SONY hit us with a great look at Uncharted2's gameplay. Live gameplay footage was then used throughout the presentation to actually show us what we were getting on a huge screen, that only the PS3 could actually properly support. Yes it was showing off, but hell why not?- the other consoles couldn't do it.<BR><BR>Uncharted2's gameplay alone was enough to make even the most hardened Xbox360 fan's eyes go green with envy - it was gorgeous and I wanted to play it then and there. <BR><BR>But it was far from over - what followed then was a mini-gun barage of live rounds:<BR><BR>1) MAG - with a live demonstration of 256 players playing live at once - SOCOM gone truly next gen...<BR><BR>2) PSPGo a gorgeous re-design of the PSP....<BR><BR>3) PSP's new catalogue - including a full Gran Turismo (presented by the creator of GT - with over 800(!) cars) and the huge revelation of an exclusive Metal Gear Solid: Peacemaker by Hideo himself (its going to be interesting to see what else is revealed at konami's presentation) - which the MAN himself says is more than just a bitty aside - its one of the series - 10 yrs after MGSiii (and the PSP is gainingmore mometum in the micro-obsessed Japanese market) <BR><BR>4) An exclusive shared content mario kart-esq game by the same team who made 'Little Big Planet'....<BR><BR>5) The first proper look at Assasin's creed2 - multi-platform....<BR><BR>6) A HUGE revelation that ROCKSTAR (the biggest game developer) was going back to be exclusive to SONY with 'The Agent' - and remember - GTA was exclusive to SONY and it was GTAIII that defined Rockstar's and SONY's worldwide position last gen....<BR><BR> But it didn't end there and by this point MS executives were burying their heads, trying to look calm and collected as the sweat poured from their brow - because what had preceeded was enough to cope with...but Sony weren't content to kick M$ - they wanted to stamp on them....and they did:<BR><BR> <BR>1) A REAL (not faked like Microsofts) tech demo of Wii style controllers using the PSEYE with more accuracy and dynamism than either the Wii controllers or anything M$ were offering.. It's clear Sony offering is bar far a better fit with games, and is at a more advanced stage of development (because they could show it live without a script to have to work to).<BR><BR> 2) Final Fantasy had been waved in our faces from the first hour that Square Enix had said it would be Multiplatform. Xbots around the world announced that this was the end for SONY - they had lost possibly their biggest exclusive franchise. M$ executives were gloating. Money talked. Well yes, it does, for a while. We were shown a presentation of FFXIII - and for the first time got to see how truly great it is going to be. SONY fans were thankful for the pre-view, but still tasted a bit of salt. BUT then - FFXIV - exclusive to PS3 (as well as FFXIII versus). M$ executives began to choke on the ice cubes in their Ice teas. They started to pass each other damp towels... <BR><BR>3) The first PROPER look at GT5 - with new licences including WRO, le Mans and NASCAR and in-game footage that blew Forza out of the water....<BR><BR>4) And then a huge one - an in-depth look at the new game from the makers of ICO and Shadow of the Colussus - again with in-game footage - an utterly beatiful looking game...<BR><BR> 5) And the the icing on the cake - God Of War III...<BR><BR> <BR><BR>My faith in Sony is justified - they haven't let us down at all. At the end of the day I bought my console for games - and I am going to get games that are better than anything that has come b4 and almost all of them are ONLY available on PS3. This with the news that both Wipeout HD and MS

I was most impressed by micrososft's project Natal...BUT... there are a few possible problems.<BR><BR>MS is loudly trumpeting motion control without a controller at all. But I think some games would benefit most from a mixture of controller and camera based controls. I mean in a hardcore action or RPG game, how exactly are you going to move your in-world character, navigate or look around?<BR><BR>I think some combination of wii-motion-plus and Natal would work best. A pure controller-less camera based system will only be good for causal or niche games, as far as I can imagine.

Some might say that a combination of Sony's Eye Toy and new motion thing might be the best thing.. but as far as I know, Sony's eye-toy is much more primitive and laggy than MS's Natal (which uses two cams and IR "ladar" like system to make the visual processing really sing) and the motion controller might, from the way they have been talking about it, require the eye-toy and not actually have any motion sensing tech built in, which may or may not make it worse for detecting tilt and rotation, and it has that ridiculous huge orb on it. <BR><BR>But this is all speculation, maybe Sony's system will turn out to be the best.

Nintendo didn't present anything that would make me go buy a Wii, but I've never been much of a Nintendo fan. Their aesthetics just sit wrong with me (might be age-related?)<BR><BR>Microsoft has certainly lived up and probably exceeded expectations, but I'm still not convinced that a 360 would be a wise purchase (reliability issues, noise), and I'm concerned that the new peripherals and applications will lead to another round of hardware failures. I really don't wish it on anyone though!<BR><BR>Sony has managed to present at least some surprises after all those "leaks", and primarily in the software department. As I've got their system sitting in my lounge, that's what really counts for me. I'm looking forward to great games in the next 12 months - there are just too many for both my money and time budget.<BR><BR>Overall I think the industry has put on a great show, especially considering the strength of the 3rd party sector. Personally, I think that Sony is a little bit ahead of Microsoft in regards to exclusives and also distribution.<BR><BR>It's great to be a gamer, isn't it?

MS and Sony have one major issue, I don't think they can afford to have games come out that REQUIRE their new technologies, not many anyway. And Nintendo can't have games come out that REQUIRE the motion plus. The result will be that not many games really use the technology to really good effect.

@mgillespie<BR><BR>I admit that in some ways the Sony demo was more substantial. <BR><BR>I think MS's camera and visual processing tech is probably more advanced, but the Milo thing I will reserve judgement on.<BR><BR>EDIT: Natal uses binocular vision and IR Ladar (as far as I have read) for much more accurate and rapid 3D visual processing. It's really a step beyond EyeToy.<BR><BR>But MS's stated aim to not have any controller with the natal project alarms me. That might mean that there will not be any hardcore games using Natal. I think Natal Plus motion controllers like Sony's and MotionPlus would be the best route to change the way hardcore games are done.<BR><BR>and yeah...Nintendo is TOAST. They screwed the pooch when they didn't have MotionPlus like quality from the very beginning. And processing hardware just sucks too badly. But Wii will continue to be a good cheapo system for non gamers and little kids. And N will make a lot of money off of that.

Wii is a wasted opportunity. Real motion sensing and visual processing based gaming starts in the next generation, not this one. Unless MS or Sony can very rapidly get a very large installed base for Natal and the Sony solution.<BR><BR>As far as game announcements go..I do not think MS did shabbily at all. Forza etc are going to be very good.

So take what I say coming from a perspective of someone who loves pretty much any good news regardless of system. <BR><BR>Games: Honestly, Sony's lineup excited me more, too. But considering the mass-market appeal factor of games like Halo, the fact that they have two more coming out is pretty big news. I think Microsoft had enough exclusives to keep their fanbase happy, much like Sony did. You sort of have to put on fanboy goggles to try to see the world from their perspective. Fans of either one are going to be happy with the game lineup, and aren't necessarily going to miss the exclusives from the other console. I mean, saying that Microsoft fans are "choking" because of FF XIV is a pretty hilarious idea...<BR><BR>I watched 10 Sony fans scream and laugh at Microsoft...until they heard that XIV is an online game. Then they just cursed. An online FF game won't have any appeal to a guy who only plays Halo and Gears of War. I mean, I always plan on getting Metal Gear and FF games for my PS3 even if they come out for XBox...but FFXIV didn't pique my interest once I found out it was an "online adventure". Sounds like an MMO on a console...FF or not, that doesn't excite me at all. <BR><BR>Tech: Um...The motion capture part of Natal is VERY real. It was demo'd over a year ago working very well. So even if they changed nothing, it would be an impressive leap in technology. The whole Milo thing I'll agree seems pie in the sky, but Natal and Milo are not the same thing. <BR><BR>Secondly the PSP... yikes. I'll have to get one in my hands, but the design does NOT look comfortable. The games for the PSP look AWESOME this year, but since I can play them on my 3000 I'm just not sure I'll really need to drop $250 for a product that most reviewers have said feels a little bit uncomfortable. I don't have tiny hands. <BR><BR>There's nothing wrong with thinking Sony won, but from your words, it's pretty obvious that you're not thinking anywhere near objectively. I bought my systems for entertainment and I can't wait for all the great games coming out. It makes the investment worthwhile to me. That being said, if Sony had a stable of games like this from the get-go, it probably would have seen a heck of a lot more game time. As it stands, my XBox has the biggest game collection.<BR><BR>Personally, I can't wait for Uncharted 2, the new Halos, God of War III, the new Team Ico game, Alan Wake, Modern Warfare 2, Splinter Cell, Agent, and bunch of the other games. It's going to be a great year-- especially since I don't play favorites with my consoles. Well...sure, the Wii isn't getting much love right now...but since I bought the Wii as a gamer, I'm not exactly getting much love from them, either...

Not sure I care at all about new motion sensing gadgets.<BR><BR>Know which Wii tech has been successful? (Hint: It's not motion sensing!)<BR><BR>... The IR Pointer has been the Wii's saving grace. Sony's new solution can copy this but Natal (as shown) cannot. More than any other innovation I want to see wii-style pointer controls on the HD consoles. I cry playing RE5 with an analogue stick after just having finished RE4 on Wii. My hands bleed out the fingernails when I go to play Left 4 Dead on my friend's 360 after weeks of PC play. I think to myself... l4d 360 NEEDS a pointer! In my household the mouse > the couch in most cases. Wii-style pointer control would change that really damn fast.<BR><BR>Not that I'm giving up on motion controls. The Natal tech demos certainly are intriguing and for some genres it could be a great leap forward (exercise is a genre now right?). And who knows? Some great new developer of tomorrow could just wow the entire hardcore community and set body motion controls as the defacto standard. But not anytime soon.<BR><BR>Summary: Motion tech demos are fun to watch, but if Sony or Microsoft are trying to add hardware mid console life cycle PLEASE take the part that works well. I get that MS were the ones who showed footage of The Beatles, and being able to do so first was a huge advantage, but I still wouldn't lump cross-platform third-part games in with any one of the big 3 in particular.<BR><BR>Same goes for GH:VH I s'pose.

I don't think most people have actually seen the presentations, who has 5 and a half hours to spare? We are all just going on what we've read on our favourite websites, which are suitable biased one way or another.<br><br>The figures may be different if you case them out now, but I did some adding up which makes for interesting analysis - not of which company or products were best received, but of the fickle nature of internet fools like us (yes, I include me).<br><br>M - 65% said best showing, but only 41% when you add up the individual announcements - that's a 30% + drop<br>N - only 7% said best showing, but 24% for the individual announcements - nearly 350% higher<br>S - 28% versus 38% - just over 30% up<br><br>Naturally, this is as much a fault with the poll design as anything else, but it does tend to highlight our strange need to flag wave, or put down, based on our pre-existing perceptions, and not on the data available.<br><br>( And yes, I know these don;t all add up to %100 - blame to poll beta -- View image here: http://episteme.meincmagazine.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif -- )<br><br>So what does it tell us? It tells us that, for example, we put Nintendo down for not really innovating, just producing sequels etc - but that we really WANT the sequels - seems they know us better than ourselves? We laud Microsoft for innovating with expanding the Xbox experience into social networking, and new control concepts etc, but that really we know it's all window dressing, and we'd like more games, please. And as usual Sony get a kicking because the PS3 is the whipping boy, but that's a lot of good games on there that we want to play.<br><br>Well, that's my analysis...

Well, it looks like Natal really won Microsoft some points in the overall category. Between that and the new Live features, it really seemed to me like MS was the only one really innovating at the show.<BR><BR>Sony presented a good number of really beautiful and clever games. I'm eager to see a lot of these titles in full.<BR><BR>Nintendo had Metroid. 'nuff said?<BR><BR>I think the excitement of truly new tech and features won the gold for Microsoft while Sony's strong stable of upcoming, exciting exclusives handily took the silver. Nintendo did more or less what was expected but some of that was still high quality. If their entire presentation had been Metroid, people would have been equally stoked.

It was what the Wii should have been all along, and even the motion plus demos were not as impressive in my opinion. Natal may also be stillborn for hardcore games if MS sticks to its "no controller" guns.
