Something something, a broken clock.

A follow up article detailing any likely purchasers of Chrome and what that might entail in the event that this remedy is enforced would be much appreciated!

There can't be too many buyers interested or with pockets deep enough to afford the initial sales price, much less continued development (a thankless task if there ever was one). And some of the biggest players (like Microsoft) would seem ineligible simply because of concerns with prior monopolistic behavior.

I know I'd love to hear more on the subject, but I don't know if Google AI Search will bring me the answers I seek.

Let's pretend appeals and shenanigans won't draw this out ad infinitum and get right to speculation!

Suitors:
Microsoft: Competitor--not an option
Apple: Competitor--not an option
Facebook: Fire pan to fire--not an option
X: Fuck me, please no.

Spinning off into a wholly independent and new company would be my preferred choice.

Given that the market for paid web browsers is basically nonexistent and that Chrome exists as a piece of spyware to pass along its users' personal information to Google (and that does a bit of web browsing on the side), it's hard to imagine how Chrome would exist as a separate entity. Would it be bought up by some other search entity that needs a lot of user info? Would Chrome just pass along that info to the highest bidder? Or what?

You'd be surprised, Lina Khan at the FTC has been very active at tackling monopolies ever since she was put in place by Biden, and this has not been significantly affected despite the rest of the stuff happening over in the gov.

It’s gonna be Experian, Acxiom, or a large insurance company if the divestment ever happens. There is lots of money in data collection, especially now that we’re sliding back to a pre-ACA health insurance market.

Imagine how many claims Blue Cross could proactively deny if they knew what symptoms you were searching for!?

Edit to spell Acxiom correctly

A lot of big businesses use NodeJS and ElectronJS. Maybe there could be funding to maintain Chromium under the umbrella of the OpenJS Foundation. I would not mind that.
I listened to a talk on this over the weekend. My honest thought was, why can't it be developed like we develop Linux.

Even though Google's lawyers are loudly protesting, this solution is still missing the biggest monopolistic problem with Alphabet Inc, which is the combination of its search engine (Google) and its advertising services (AdMob/AdSense/DoubleClick/Ads). For sure, Alphabet dumped over $20 billion/yr into making Google Search the default on devices everywhere, but there would be no need to do that if it didn't secure Google's seat on the throne of advertising.

Methinks that Pichai et al. will publicly protest these feebler trust-busting attempts, so long as they distract from the truly powerful cash cow that keeps Google dominant: the unholy marriage of owning both the ad marketplace and the roads prospective buyers take to the marketplace, leaving sellers with no choice but to use Google.

Edit: Other Google ad tech products are Google Ad Manager and Google Marketing Platform. Thanks to @Ushio for clarifying that it was Search, not Chrome, for which Google paid to be the default almost everywhere (e.g. Safari). Also thanks to @rwhitwam for noting that the result to the second Google antitrust case is anticipated soon, and it is expected to go poorly for Google. One can only wish for the best -- that would be some good news to read in trying times!

I know they don't have the money but, I'd love to see Mozilla pick it up and expand their user base. If Mozilla kept up it's current behavior when it comes to user data, it'd be a great place for it. I know them acquiring Chrome is extremely unlikely due to them be a competitor and the cost, but one can hope.
Mozilla just lost half its budget because of their deal with Google ending. They can't possibly buy Chrome.

lol, if i had a nickel for every time I see someone on here call Trump's admin a broken clock... I wouldn't be rich, but I'd have a lot of fucking nickels.
Normally I'd advise someone to spend those nickels on a subscription, but I'm hoping that you just go away overnight, like a miracle.

Why do you even show up? Why not contribute, or at least try to contribute, or just get the fuck out? Do you have something to say about the DoJ, or Google, or anything at all besides parroting some lines you've banked in you your head? Is this you owning the libs?

It's a fools errand to try to make sense of Trumpers, but you keep showing up so I might as well ask.

I think the only reason Trump is going along is because he thinks he or his cronies can pick that carcasses and profit off it. He or GOP doesn't give two fucks about consumer safety or competition.
For sure the DOJ will say Chrome has to be sold directly to Musk and he'll name it XBrowser.

Why woudn't Google just part out Chrome into a non profit controlled mostly by Google-friendly board, including Microsoft. Make the board regulations be that you have to had worked on Chrome code or project management for the last 10 years. Pretty much only would have employees from Google and Microsoft. Charge people to be a part of the advisory, including Google. Then they can still 'control' its direction - keep removing extension capabilities, keep pushing quic. Selling it is stupid because while nice, they don't need whatever 500-2 billion it would gather, they gain far more by divesting it into a non profit.
