In Propublica's article on the study it says:
"Such agents sometimes hesitated to push rents higher. Roper said they were often peers of the people they were renting to. “We said there’s way too much empathy going on here,” he said. “This is one of the reasons we wanted to get pricing off-site.”"
I just wanted to say that if you find yourself thinking / saying / acting upon the idea that "there's way too much empathy going on here" then the answer to the question "Are we the baddies?" would be a unequivocal YES.
