Worth every penny.

If that was the only thing we got out of the ISS, I'd be pretty happy.

We got way more though, so yay for humanity!

Also, I'd really like to know from him how the lack of gravity affected his ability to sing and play guitar.

i'd guess it had no effect on his singing, since the atmosphere/pressure there is similar to earth. but he probably had to learn how to hold the guitar again. i noticed patches on the back of the guitar body - likely velcro to hold it to his shirt/uniform since a neck strap won't work without gravity.

He doesn't necessarily own the copyright to his songs.

He has a video on the topic: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLRunqi1mDM

He says that playing the guitar is slightly different because there's no weight on your arm.

Just because he thanks David Bowie, it doesn't mean that DB was part of it, or even approves.

However, "David Bowie Official" Twitter feed linked to it, and as it seems to be controlled by the recording company (no personal tweets, only release announcements), I would guess they wont interfere.

But more ridiculous things has happened, so you never know.

This guy is, in my opinion, the best public face for the space program we've seen in 30 years. He engages the public in a completely genuine way. I imagine kids love him, as he's the kind of guy who'd be given a weekly kids educational show on the CBC in the '80s.

Plus, he went to high school in my hometown. :) (Our local cable company put a live feed from the space shuttle on an unused channel when he went up in it in the '90s.)

Indeed, please include this in the main article. I came to the comments just to point it out. It was the moment that my man-crush on Commander Hadfield began. It is the most inspiring space song I've heard in such a long time!

He's an astronaut with a YouTube channel and can play music. He probably knows more than you think.

BTW, did you even see the video? He changed the lyrics.

Going to chime in with my Canada-Pride as well. Hadfield will be able to do just about anything he wants when he gets back down. I only hope he uses his power for good, not evil.

We've got a... strange group of people who are generally regarded as great Canadians, or heroes or what have you; Tommy Douglas, Terry Fox, Nellie Mclung, Billy Bishop, Gretzky, Brock. Some military, some sports, but mostly people who contributed to the country in some profound way. It'll be interesting if he continues the way he has and turns himself into some kind of lasting legacy like those folks, or if he'll disappear into obscurity when he gets back down. He may not even want to continue in the public sphere when he's on earth.

If he moves to the states, well, don't try coming to Canada for a bit, we'll all be locked in our rooms moping over the breakup.

Good lord, if Bowie -DIDNT'T- approve it, I think musicians, geeks and scientists the world over would rise up to scorn him so hard he would wish he was sitting in a tin can far above the world for the rest of his life!

Also;
I don't think he knows what that song is _really_ about.

And that would be why he re-wrote many of the lyrics....

It's a Canadian thing. About 90% of all RCMP male officers and 50% of military officers you will encounter if you ever come up here will have one.

In fact, Chris Hadfield looks frighteningly like my father in some of the angles of his pictures, and in this amazingly awesome video as well. ;-)

Watching the video just kinda making me nerves the whole time looking at those wiring dangling around and hoping he won't be stumbled over them while he was performing. Don't say accident won't happen. It happens. When I work on my full tower case I tend to tie up every single piece of wire nice and neat, but I guess that these are scientists they are not into this type of stuff as to an average Joe like myself. I guess they are more of paying full attention on the big stuff and not this wiring. BTW If there is room for a pool table I am in.

I was sitting by the cable car terminal in San Francisco picking my nose for 5 and a half hour not knowing some guys doing a space walk 200 miles up high. Sighs.. Could we be more productive to our society?

Said the exact same thing to my wife earlier when showing her the clip. Cmdr Hadfield deserves a medal for it (and a David Bowie invite :)

I already have huge respect to everybody involved in all space programs, but this is the icing on the cake.

Simply amazing

:)

Edit : just watched the washcloth video, and loved it. The guy is fantastic!

He could probably get an educational TV show. He's certain to be a speaker at every major public event for the next year or so - I think he's already doing the Calgary Stampede.

Or, as a friend posted on facebook, he could declare himself orbital dictator of Canada for life and nobody would really have any problems either.

I can't see him becoming a politician. He seems to be quite above that sort of thing.

Without wishing to make this discussion political - and I am not saying Lord Pachelbel is wrong in his/her opinion - I cannot help but wonder how much money the various Governments of the world spend *each year* killing fellow human beings (i.e. military budgets), and how this compares to the *total* cost of the ISS?

Just a thought, to try and put things into context.
