Apple unveils new iPad Pros with nearly edge-to-edge screens

I love my iPads, but given how I use them (largely in bed or lazily on the couch when the kids are hogging the boob tube), I can see the need to swipe to get to home being a major pain in my arse. It wasn't such a problem on the X...but then I've got pretty big hands for a short Irishman. Makes it easier to juggle all these potatoes.

Nice. But... Well, I've got a 10 inch iPad Pro that me (and my children) use all the time. I even splurged on the pen as it's a lot of fun.

I doubt it'll need upgrading for years.

Maybe Apple are banking on people skipping 2 or even 3 or 4 iterations before upgrading.

It's still a fine machine and does me very nicely. I expect there'll be some game software that requires more grunt but as long as my various synths, Garage Band and some drawing SW work I'm not going to need to upgrade.

Personally, I find slim bezels on tablets annoying. They are harder to hold without tapping or swiping by mistake.

I believe the original iPad had been designed with wide bezels for that reason.
Hopefully they've got some sort of software mitigation for that in place. I've noticed something similar on my current 10.5" iPad Pro. I'll occasionally touch an edge of the LCD while reading in iBooks or Kindle and the page WON'T turn.

Yeah, even if the palm rejection is good, I still don't like having part of my hand cover the display. Although, I suppose there are software implementations that can get around this.

I already rarely use the home button on my iPad Pro 9.5. Pretty much just only to unlock.

The slim bezels are a big question mark, but the rest looks great.

I just hope that apple takes a chill pill and relaxes the draconian lock-down in IOS.

Example, I need to connect my iPad to a computer with itunes, just to copy my openvpn conf file from my own server.

Cmon, its 2018, time to move on apple.

Either way, i will be upgrading my iPad Air 2 to the 11".

Edit: Apple white knights, you also need to chill, apple is not perfect, neither are you or I.

If you use any sort of file syncing application (iCloud drive, Dropbox, Resilio Sync, etc) you don't need to connect the device.I don't think I have ever used a cable to transfer my OVPN files.

We need to free ourselves from the tyranny of the bezel.

I thought the iPad was already a "premium" product....?

According to live running commentary, "THIS IPAD is the ipad that they've always wanted to build."

I wonder how many times they've said that in the past.

Remember when "retina displays" were at the limits of what your eye could perceive?

Someone needs to turn these phrases onto a sort of MacWorld Expo Bingo. Or maybe a drinking game.

Is there an app for that?

Sexy. I'll be upgrading from my Air 2 to one of these. Need to see it in the shop to know which size to get.

I'm hoping that next year's iPhone might have one of those screen integrated fingerprint sensors; I'm running a 6S Plus for a phone but I'm not keen on FaceId for a phone. I don't mind looking at an iPad to unlock it but I'd prefer to be able to unlock a phone more easily. Different use cases.

Other things to remember:

Remember when "tablets with keyboards" were stupid because you couldn't put them on your lap?

Remember 5 minutes ago when the new Mac Mini was the perfect solution for "creatives"?

The lady from Adobe looked a little nervous during the Photoshop demo, but damn, the performance on the iPad Pro is impressive.

Is Apple talking about the RAM quantity and performance? I imagine a lot of Adobe software is sensitive to that.

EDIT: I assume if the USB-C port were Thunderbolt, Apple would say so. So presumably it's just stock USB 3 of some gen, likely with a grab bag of Alt Modes such as DisplayPort...

Thunderbolt would probably be difficult to implement in a non-PC system. Apart from Intel's licensing, I don't think iDevices even use PCIe internally...?
