The way they talk about the zoom levels of the "fusion" cameras is (probably intentionally) confusing. It sounds like the telephoto lens is a 4x optical zoom, and up to 8x "digital" zoom by just cutting out the middle 12MP of the camera?
Was looking to upgrade this year, and after sticking with the Pro level for a while, they've really made the non-Pro tempting.

I'm questioning if it's even worth it to upgrade from my 14 Pro Max to this year's version. Nicer cameras is nice, but at the same time there's nothing I see as a killer feature considering Apple Intelligence still won't be out at release date. Major "if" that it's even useful once it's released. Am I really about to pay out the nose just to get off lightning?

Honestly not super excited about this refresh. There doesn't seem to be a killer feature here. Camera bumps or mountains are a really ugly way to add thickness to the phones. I want a phone that will sit flat without a case. Apparently adding more battery is not the way to get that done.
I did notice a lack of AI features discussed, so I have that going for me.

Camera Mesa is more evocative. Any idea whether they snuck LIDAR ability into the stock 17?
Gotta say this is as close to "nailed it" as Apple could have realistically gotten for the non-pro model. 120Hz and 256GB min storage for $799? Adieu XR, you were a champ

So on my Pro Max the optical zoom is 5x via the "periscope" lens and presumably that is still what is inside and they are just adding a but more crop at high enough resolution not to care? The average person couldn't care less (since I see people way, way digital zooming (like 20x). But with enough pixels to crop from, it doesn't really matter, like on my dSLR this weekend I shot an airshow and my 600mm was being cranky so dropped to the trusty 400mm and honestly cropping in you'd never know, because it's also 42MP and even a tiny chunk of that is still extremely detailed. But at 48MP they are approaching (probably past) the optical resolution of the lens...

I'm glad that we had all the leaks we did to prepare us for how fucking ugly the new Pro was going to be. Yes, its going in a case. No, I don't really care. I'm in it for the updated cameras and the fact that it's not four years old.
But damn. I don't just mean the orange one, either. The blue is okay but meh, the silver is utterly lifeless, and they didn't offer the rumored deep black color.

30 hours of video playback is pretty insane. I remember when even three hours was a challenge for the typical smartphone.
Turns out the hard part of AI isn't getting sufficient AI horsepower on a device. It's finding it something useful to do outside of improved image processing and photography and better voice recognition.

I imagine the best selling phones will be the non Pro and the Pro Max, the Pro seems expensive for little more than a camera upgrade over the standard model.

Gutsy of Apple to follow their gawdawful (my personal experience) FineWoven cases with what looks (by my eye) a very similar successor - Tech Woven.
