The phone may use AI in lieu of app stores, the sources said, similar to the Light Phone, which the Transfomer development team is taking “inspiration” from, Reuters said, citing two of its sources.

The only possible "inspiration" is that both of these things are phones; Light Phone has no app store because it's got nothing but the basics baked in, not because it's leveraging AI. This is like saying Kawasaki Ninja "took inspiration" from a Cannondale bicycle.

Some random Amazon executive who had a brain fart?
Some random Amazon executive who, after being told WE MUST PUT AI IN EVERYTHING AND WE MUST BE A LEADER IN AI AND AI IS THE FUTURE for the 10,000th time muttered "I don't know, AI-powered phone?" and went back to cursing his miserable existence in this stupid tech moment. And everybody up the ladder was happy that someone finally had an AI idea they could take credit for. And so it was born.

Post content hidden for low score. Show…
Amazon’s team also wants the phone to make it easy to shop via Amazon and partners like Grubhub and to stream content from Prime Video and Prime Music.
This is a solved problem on literally every other smartphone out there. Apps.

The phone may use AI in lieu of app stores, the sources said
I use apps for banking, travel, shopping, and so on. How is that going to work? I know all of these things have websites I could use but the apps work much better on a phone. If their answer is to just let the AI do everything the apps were doing, well... no.

It’s unclear why Amazon thinks now is a good time to get back into phones. Even potentially low prices may not be enough to convince people to buy.
This phone could be free and it would still be a hard pass.

So how many more cogs are going to get canned after this pos fails?

If it ever sees the light of day that is. Hopefully never.
I hope they actually produce this phone. I hope they spend a metric f##k ton of money developing it, marketing it, getting it on retail shelves and in carrier stores. Then I hope it fails spectacularly. Maybe, just maybe then they'll realize the masses don't want AI shoved into everything and we will actively avoid it when given the option.

This is an incredibly stupid idea.

I mostly use my phone as a phone, but I still need a few apps like Door to unlock the e-locks in my apartment building, Lyft since I don't drive, Microsoft Authenticator and Google Authenticator for MFA.

Having no apps might be sort of OK for a $50 Fire tablet used to watch videos but it is not going to work for a phone.

If I was a betting man, I'd bet this phone would be free or extremely subsidized and heavily locked down to primarily drive users to Amazon properties that generates subscription, ad, and other revenue. Very much an "own nothing and be happy" device that appeals to the growing broke-as-shit-addicted-consumer demographic.

This is the way. I'm all for AI failures. This is a dumb idea, I wish them an expensive and elaborate failure rather than a swift and easy cancellation.

That's not what the Reuters article said. They cited the Light Phone for being "minimalist," they never said it uses AI.

Reuters:
One inspiration for the new phone has been the Light Phone, two of the people said, a $700 minimalist smartphone with a camera, map, calendar and not much else, such as an app store or web browser.
