Cautiously optimistic, I feel like they captured the general feel of the first book pretty well (as a friend of mine put it, "The world may be going down in flames, but I think maybe Apple TV is not going to murder my beloved Murderbot"). Also I'm totally stoked to actually watch Sanctuary Moon rather than read Murderbot's thoughts about it!

In my reading of the books, secunit is very androgynous, so it’s interesting they’ve chosen a more traditional masc character. I think Alexander Skarsgård is a great actor though.

I am curious how they will portray all the conversations between ship systems, station systems, and secunits, which form a large part of the stories.

Murderbot's favorite in-universe soap opera, The Rise and Fall of Sanctuary Moon.

I love these books, and it's kind of funny that the high point for me was actually seeing a little bit of Sanctuary Moon. MB constantly mentions it in passing, but never really describes it at all, so it could be anything. Hyper-cheesy looks like a great take.

Murderbot doesn't like emotion, but has quite a bit, and is unhappy about that. It would much rather if everything were quiet and orderly so it could park itself in storage and watch media. It's not happy at all about wanting to protect the helpless, and complains bitterly while taking extreme risks on behalf of others, well above and beyond what its actual security contract would require. It seems to be particularly jarred about liking people, like Dr. Mensah, and doesn't cope very well with having friends.

It's a great character, and the books are compulsively readable.

Murderbot, huh? I bet it'll be £5 to watch each 30-min episode.
In the US at least it's a fairly cheap subscription service and so far it is not even possible to "purchase" their TV shows digitally. ATV+ has very low subscriber numbers, perhaps because of misconceptions as you have. However, in terms of quality program I have to say most new shows worth watching can be found there. Anyway, I hope this show will be of similar quality as Severance and For all Mankind.

That was actually not a dig at ATV+ - it was a reference to the outrageous pricing of the novela or smaller sized ebooks for Murderbot.

It’s a joke about how the “books” (novellas) take about 30 minutes each to read and cost $7.99 each.

I love them, they’re great and entertaining, but they’re definitely very short and very expensive as far as “books” go.

I tried the reading the first book, but must admit that I couldn't get into it at all. (Not judging anyone who enjoyed it, just realized rather quickly that it wasn't my thing.)

Still, as I'm an Apple TV+ subscriber anyway, I'm probably going to give the series a chance. Maybe the material will click for me in a different medium.

I've never really thought about what Murderbot's face looks like, other than the fact that it's just generic. So generic action hero works for me, especially since I'm not aware of the actor otherwise - Tom Cruise would be a terrible choice because it would always be Tom Cruise.

I'm looking forward to Murderbot being constantly annoyed by humans and emotions.

Really should have went with a non-binary or female actor. The stubble on its chin is just weird for a genderless sapient organism genetically designed only to kill. It never had a puberty. Being a trans person who enjoyed the books specifically because of the gender-bending, I'm disappointed in Apple TV+'s casting. I'll likely give this a pass unless it gets absolutely rave reviews.

Having said that, Skarsgård is a great actor. Loved him in "Infinity Pool".

Actually bringing Murderbot's trash-TV hobby to life could/should be a lot of fun.
ikr‽ I sat here bouncing "OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG". Very excited.

But not nearly as excited as my almost 12-year-old kid :)

Skarsgård's slightly threatening presence somehow works very well for this character. Nice foil for the personality. (Or maybe it's just my associations: I first saw him in True Blood.)

That would be very in keeping with the Corporate Rim. But, SecUnits are programmed for security, which includes hacking. So SecUnit gets its media for free. SANCTUARY MOON FOREVER.

Same. I've been successfully avoiding an AppleTV sub for several years now, but it looks like they finally figured out the angle to spear me and reel me in. Dammit.

I'm fairly stoked, but this is definitely going to mess with my imagined versions. I wish they had used makeup and a bald cap to make MB less passingly human. (Plus, hair is a key modification MB and ART made to MB's external organic parts.) Hopefully Skarsgård is able to convey the inhumanity with his physical performance (no extraneous fidgeting; direct, robotic like movement; awkward, exaggerated facial expressions from being accustomed to not being seen). Love the armor though: totally would side with MB on wearing it all the time.

David Dastmalchian as Gurathin is great casting.

I have enjoyed the books. I'm not sure how well-suited the books are for a direct adaptation. Murderbot spends a great deal of time in his own head narrating/thinking. That usually doesn't translate well to the screen. Doing away with that would do away with the best parts of the book.

OTOH, the characters and general vibe could still be fun in a reinvented form. And Apple has generally done a good job with several shows.
