FIFA, continuing in their fine tradition of being corrupt as hell, are giving Trump a "peace prize" for "all his hard work to end conflicts and bring people together in a spirit of peace". This is all after adding Ivanka to the board of one of their "charities" which I'm sure is also 100% above board.

I was about to post this as well. I honestly thought it was an Onion headline at first.

Regarding the discussions on voter turnout, I'd be a fan of the system they have in Australia where voting is mandatory or else you get fined. At least it removes any handwringing about the silent majority or what not. Let's prove just how racist/mysognistic/etc America is.
Counterpoint: the Liberals still frequently get to be in charge.

It also needs the preferential voting system we have, in which it's impossible for your vote to be wasted. Adding in the "every election is on a Saturday" and the various additional ways to vote and a democracy sausage would help as well!

I am one of the few that learned how to program RIGHT before AI became really big, like I think I graduated that year before ChatGPT was released so I missed the hype train. And even now, all I've seen it do is make pictures no one likes and give me a list of drink ingredients that sounded great, but was terrible in execution.

I also hate the code it writes for me. So I am not a believer in AI at all. So I don't want my tax dollars to shore up anything from that weirdo stooge Altman.

I would think that it's obvious that you only reach out to non-voters who are registered Democrats or can otherwise be determined to be Democratic-leaning, especially when I was countering the suggestion that you need Trump voters to switch in order to win.

I don't think the voters are as swingy as you think. Not these days, with as polarized as we are. There are some, but not many. It's much more down to people who didn't vote.
The rest of us can't read minds. Define your terms so the rest of us can understand what you are arguing.

And in news sure to put a grin on many a face, the Heritage Foundation (you know, the authors of Project 2025) is currently having itself a lovely little civil war sparked by Heritage Foundation President Kevin Roberts defending Tucker Carlson hosting racist shitbag Nick Fuentes on his podcast. Since nobody on the right can apparently express themselves coherently, the fighting includes a large amount of anti-semitism and right-wing virtue signaling.

Additionally, in a development I'm sure everyone will find shocking, sexism is rampant at the Heritage Foundation with women being encouraged to not worry their pretty little heads about politics and go get pregnant instead.

Here's a complete list of presidential elections with higher turnout than 2020 in the era where women and Black people were legally allowed to vote:

I didn't forget to write something in that space; there aren't any higher turnout elections. And crucially to my point, 2020 levels of turnout probably would have put Harris over the top, it wouldn't have saved the senate seats in Ohio or Montana. To not just win the presidency but put senate seats in states like Ohio and Iowa and Florida back in play and actually win governing majorities, Democrats almost certainly need to win back some Trump voters.

If your alternate theory is "have the highest turnout in the history of the country", I think you sort of have to admin no one really knows how to do that. I don't think your theory stands up to scrutiny though. Is the reason there was record turnout in 2020 that Joe Biden was the most inspiring candidate of our lifetimes? And is the reason 2024 was the second highest turnout ever that even though Harris was less inspiring than Biden she was a bit more inspiring than Obama? That's definitely not how I would rank order the inspirational-ness of those three people; it just doesn't seem to have a correlation to turnout.

Turnout was relatively high because people were voting for or against Trump. He won't be on the ballot in 2028 (one hopes). But how much higher could it have been if the candidate on the Democratic side was Obama-like? Look at how the voter turnout spiked in NYC for Mamdani. Policy and charisma are both needed. Having a candidate that excites people will make a big difference in the down-ballot races as well.

And maybe you can slough off some Trump voters. But not by calibrating your message to them. By actually presenting a compelling alternative option instead of just "not Trump."

If you're an immigration judge who worked as the defense in an immigration proceeding before becoming a judge, you're almost twice as likely to be fired by the Trump administration compared to judges with other backgrounds.

It's another venue where the current administration is attempting to enshrine its values into our institutions. The effect of skewing towards judges that have an enforcement background will likely make immigration courts more likely to agree with enforcement actions in ways that are difficult to observe and measure.

Trump's appointees don't deserve the benefit of the doubt. When he's out of office there will have to be a massive undertaking to remove partisan and bad faith appointees.

I know she has been talking about this since last year, but I do wonder if this is a sign that the Democratic leadership is finally realizing that they need to retire the old guard and make way for the newer, more progressive generation if there is any hope of preserving democracy.
Not getting my hopes up yet. It could be health issues at her age.

I mean, I hope they are, but she's 85 years old. If pride in her position was at all a factor in her not retiring earlier, this moment marks a low point in both the prestige and power of the Democratic establishment so that's probably less than a factor than it was. She's also the lady who called from her hospital bed to appoint a man dying of cancer to block AOC from getting a post and has a long history of attacking the Squad in general.

She's stepping down and that's a good thing, but there's no evidence that she's doing it to make way for a "newer, more progressive generation" and lots of much more obvious reasons why she would be. One data point does also not a trend make, and there's nobody obviously driving it so I'm not even sure who I would congratulate for realizing this if so.

On the whole, I think interpreting this as an intentional push at generational shift, much less a generational and ideological shift, is basically just squinting at tea leaves and seeing what we want to see.

So, basically he said the quiet part out loud then?

I'm actually heartened that Oz looked genuinely concerned and dare I say compassionate there. The man behind the desk did exactly what I'd want him to do - nothing. Is he going to roll up his sleeves and start giving chest compressions? I guess he could have barked at everyone to get out of the room instead of his aides.
