Google won’t have to sell Chrome, judge rules

The DOJ and FTC under Biden were notorious for this - they went for the showy headlines to try and show how much the administration was fighting "big business" and more often than not found themselves either losing cases outright or winning worthless remedies. Of course then they'd also do the...

Why extracting data from PDFs is still a nightmare for data experts

PDFs are probably in the top 5 for worst file formats to use in business. Especially when companies do things like embed tables within the PDFs. I get a lot of those at work and if I'm lucky maybe 50% of the time I can manage to successfully extract the table into Excel but I usually wind up...

Big Tech is extremely unimpressed by Apple’s EU App Store changes

Part of me wonders just how hard the EU will actually fight against a lot of Apple’s restrictions since the DMA makes allowances for privacy and security and any they risk a lot of negative publicity if the changes they force lead to negative consequences. I mean the EU never hesitates to mouth...

Big Tech is extremely unimpressed by Apple’s EU App Store changes

THIS 100%. I’ve always maintained that the DMA is so poorly written that the EU will be forced to try and get a ton of amendments through to fix it because it just does not address anything in a successful manner. I think the biggest failure is its lack of anything addressing IP fees, which is...

Why today’s Epic v. Google trial is (and isn’t) a repeat of Epic v. Apple

i can’t wait until the EU’s requirements lead to some scandal involving people being taken advantage of by scammy sideloaded apps because you know they’ll immediately try blaming Apple for not doing enough to protect EU citizens.

Why today’s Epic v. Google trial is (and isn’t) a repeat of Epic v. Apple

The other thing that never gets mentioned and that actually became a centerpoint of Apple’s case being decided in its favor is that the fee isn’t just payment processing - it’s essentially an IP fee. The judge in Apple’s case clearly stated that even IF Apple is made to let users install other...

CEO of rocket-maker ULA makes a sales pitch—for the whole company

Prior to its purchase of Ball’s aerospace division I though BAE had a chance due to their independent US subsidiary that’s already a BIG DoD supplier and they have a pre-existing satellite business that could make for interesting synergies. Maybe Alphabet will buy it and rename it “Google...

Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite looks like the Windows world’s answer to Apple Silicon

One thing Apple did to boost performance of x86 software on Apple Silicon was include hardware to help smooth out the difference in memory system designs between ARM and x86. I’m curious if Qualcomm will replicate this…

BMW, Mini, Rolls-Royce, Toyota, and Lexus are switching EV plugs

I remember Ford sold (maybe still does?) a car in Brazil that could be powered by gasoline, CNG, 100% ethanol, and I think maybe one other type of fuel. Back in the early 2000’s Boone Pickens published a plan to shift the US to CNG vehicles and part of me wishes that had taken off because of how...

Godzilla roars his way onto Apple TV+ in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters teaser

This is only tangentially related but I basically wasn’t able to sleep through the night from kindergarten through high school because of the Chucky movies. And I never even saw the movies! But my best friend in kindergarten spent one afternoon on the playground describing each of the movies in...

Warner Bros. Discovery will launch new “Max” streaming service May 23

She’s pro gay rights and is not anti-trans in the “trans people should die” sense but in the “trans women are different from cis women and being a trans woman shouldn’t automatically mean you get access to women-only spaces” (or at least she used to be, don’t know if she’s become more radical as...

Here’s why slashing insulin prices will actually save Big Pharma money

I work in pharmacy pricing and reimbursement and let me tell you this would be the number one change I would implement if I were emperor for a day. No other proposed change would be as effective at reducing the cost of drugs while also maintaining investment in domestic R&D.

Stadia’s pivot to a cloud service has also been shut down

My brother works for a mining company and a year or two after he started there they transitioned to Google Cloud and it’s various office suite/service products. That lasted approx. 1.5 years before the company pulled the emergency brake and hopped over to Microsoft and hasn’t looked back. They...

Report: Apple engineers are working on third-party app store support in iOS

It won't. Creating holes in the wall (even ones that are doors or windows) necessitates creating more points of failure in the security of the system. Just because someone doesn't download or use any third-party app stores or side-loaded apps doesn't mean they'll be safe from the negative impacts.

Report: Apple engineers are working on third-party app store support in iOS

100%. I've yet to see regulatory proposals that would eliminate Apple's ability to charge commissions for the use of its IP and I don't see any government rushing to do so anytime soon. That's one of those forbidden paths that governments don't take as that way lies madness.

Report: Apple engineers are working on third-party app store support in iOS

You made the CHOICE to buy a computer knowing the limitations put in place by the manufacturer and developer. If you don't like the restrictions you buy something else. That is how freedom of choice works. If you buy it anyways and determine you still don't like the restrictions you are free to...

Report: Apple engineers are working on third-party app store support in iOS

I guarantee you that third-party app stores and apps will still have to pay Apple a commission, regardless of where the customer downloads the app. One important thing the DSA or other various rules and regulations passed or proposed in legislatures so far have failed to address - purposefully...

Why are hard drive companies investing in DNA data storage?

I remember back in the early aughts when there were quite a few arguments on the internet about whether we’d all be using holographic storage by 2010 or if we’d be using DNA storage (attached to our personal quantum computers, of course). We were so much more optimistic back then…

Google launches third-party Play Store billing pilot—but only cuts fees by 4%

Apple has stated multiple times that the 30% fee is not just the payment processing fee it also includes the commission on using their IP. The judge in the Epic case explicitly stated that Apple has the right to charge commissions for using it’s IP, even if developers use third party payment...

How SoftBank’s costly bet on the “Internet of things” backfired at Arm

Not to nitpick but Apple uses ARM’s ISA, not their designs. It speaks the same language as other ARM chips, but utilizing original designs from the Apple Silicon design team.
