Apple Intelligence news summaries are back, with a big red disclaimer

Sadly a lot of headlines are clickbait and uninformative. I try to stay away from news sources that go this route, but I'm not iOS's typical user.

“Surface Laptop 5G” for businesses shows Microsoft isn’t done with Intel yet

Microsoft could be done with Intel, but until the software that businesses use go to their ARM architecture, they'd be shooting themselves in the foot. And the other foot. And probably some other choice body parts.

Netflix aims to support HDR10+ in all HDR titles “by the end of this year”

"Netflix adding HDR10+ support to its service at no extra cost..." Of course there's a cost. You've both already paid it and will be paying it in the future, whether or not you use it.

11 standouts from Steam Next Fest’s thousands of free game demos

I really wish more publishers made demos a more permanent thing. How much does the rush of FOMO help smaller studios versus the long tail of people being able to explore their game at any time?

Nothing explains why the Phone 3a Pro ended up with a giant camera

"Some people will hate it"? That's not news; that's the Free Square on every internet discussion bingo card.

CES 2025 teases alarming smart TV future loaded with unwanted software, gimmicks

The fantastic part of this capability is that it's already available for free through many, many search engines that readers here will probably have on-hand much easier than the terrible UX that unwanted emerging technology tends to have.

The Backbone One would be an ideal game controller—if the iPhone had more games

Apple seems to be fantastic about getting people excited about their hardware platforms, but a much harder time drawing in developers for their newer endeavors. The few times outside hardware that I've seen Apple get ahead of the curve are related to the App Store (mobile), audio (iTunes music...

Character.AI steps up teen safety after bots allegedly caused suicide, self-harm

Responding to a lawsuit should not count as "stepping up" to solve an issue that should never have existed to begin with.

Starlink enters National Radio Quiet Zone—but reportedly cut off access for some

That Starlink is trying to solve a problem with respect to the conditions put in place is a testament to what their engineers can do when Musk is not getting personally involved. I can only hope that he doesn't later see this as a foot-in-the-door tactic to run over the NRAO.

Apple to allow iOS app installs from websites, but small devs don’t qualify

Because they disagree with the EU and are using their position to figure out what the rules mean and therefore how they can protect their business model. While I'm rolling my eyes at Apple (and an all-in user at that), I also often wonder if the EU knows what they're doing with tech. (edit...

After a decade of stops and starts, Apple kills its electric car project

This is only one project that we know about. It wasn't exactly skunkworks but trying and failing is still educational. The big question I have is did Apple learn anything that they will leverage into, for example, machine learning or CarPlay? If they didn't, then that's a true shame.

After Final Cut Pro debacle, does Apple still care about creative pros?

If a headline asks the reader a question, the answer is almost certainly "no". We've still to hear Apple to come out with a definitive answer to this as well. They're not a company to bet against doing this, even if they haven't really done it yet.

2K Games: new Xcom is like Ray Charles in the style of Kanye West

If I read "contemporary" as to mean "console", this decision makes a lot of sense. Porting a PC title (or IP) to the console seems to leave many development studios lost and confused, but the promise of a large bag of cash from a wider audience is a no-brainer.
