What happens to a car when the company behind its software goes under?

Definitely, as much as I love working on mechanical things there have been quite a few times when I've stomped back and forth across my workshop shouting obscenities because I realized something I was working on was designed in a downright idiotic way. Nothing like spending hours removing a...

What happens to a car when the company behind its software goes under?

My daily driver is a 1988 Saab 900I and the relative simplicity of repairs is one of the reasons I love it. Of course, it has a Bosch K-jetronic fuel injection system and those are pretty finicky so ideally I think there should be just a pinch more electronics involved.

Easy mistake to make considering that Oden is in fact spelled Oden in Swedish.

GLP-1 drugs improve heart health—but only if you keep taking them

From your comments it seems you're still in the stage where you're actively losing weight. While this part can feel easy the difficult part for most is to maintain your weight once you've reached your desired weight. For most people who have never been overweight this isn't much of a problem...

After years of saying no, Tesla reportedly adding Apple CarPlay to its cars

I have to wonder, are there any new cars these days that come with a standard single or double DIN stereo? And yeah, others mentioned 90s era cars, I have to say that one the things I love about my 1988 Saab 900i is how easy it is to fix and how it isn't a huge mess of tightly integrated...

Reddit bug caused lesbian subreddit to be labeled as a place for “straight” women

I find that it varies. For some subjects it seems Google ranks Reddit's auto-translated pages higher than a lot of more relevant hits. Though when going back and checking some searches in my history just now it seems like Google may have been tweaking something because the results don't seem as...

Reddit bug caused lesbian subreddit to be labeled as a place for “straight” women

I think that you're missing the point. If a person in Sweden (to continue with the example) went to Google and searched for something like "lagar isolering tak" ("laws insulation roof") before Reddit's AI slop translations they'd get SWEDISH results about SWEDISH laws. Now if they do the same...

Reddit bug caused lesbian subreddit to be labeled as a place for “straight” women

Yeah, I've hated Reddit's automatic translations since they first appeared. Now, for someone in an English-speaking country they may not seem like a big deal because you're used to specifying location when talking about a lot of things. But, if you're Swedish and you search for something in...

Google will block sideloading of unverified Android apps starting next year

Well this sucks. I have a couple of apps I use regularly where the developer stopped updating them due to loss of interest and instead chose to release the last version for free as an apk file. Guess I should be paying some dodgy Chinese developer instead.

Tesla shows no sign of improvement in May sales data

This seems like a very US-centric take in an article that talks about international sales figures. Yes, in the US it appears that there's a push for NACS but elsewhere NACS isn't really a thing at all.

Researchers find AI is pretty bad at debugging—but they’re working on it

At this point I'm sure most devs have that one coworker who keeps trying to let an AI tool generate code for them with predictable results. Like, sure IntelliJ's AI-powered autocomplete for individual statements/lines of code is pretty neat (and often pretty accurate) but asking an AI bot to...

Civilization VII, one month later: The community and developers chime in

So, I did know about the stronger emphasis on ages but as I'm not one of those obsessive types who sit around waiting impatiently for new games I didn't know much more than this. Foolishly I assumed they wouldn't break the basic concept of what Civ games are, which is to say something like...

Civilization VII review: A major overhaul solves Civ’s oldest problems

Just bought the game on Steam, played for something like 15 minutes before I uninstalled and made a refund request. This game is nowhere near ready for release. For shame, Firaxis. Edit: And just to be clear, I've played every Civ game and Alpha Centauri. I probably have over 10k hours played...

Generative AI has done one unambiguously good thing for PCs and Macs: 16GB of RAM

I have to admit that I haven't been paying attention to the specifications of prebuilt PCs lately but this reminds me of that era when for several years even as GPUs and CPUs improved drastically the baseline RAM option was 256 MB for way too long. I was running on 768 MB and thinking about...

Review: Amazon’s 2024 Kindle Paperwhite makes the best e-reader a little better

Sounds like your Paperwhite is a lot better than mine then. Just grazing the button or resting it on a soft surface (think: duvet on my chest while in bed) will more often than not cause it to power off (or accidentally trigger a full shutdown because I didn't notice it was being pressed down)...

Faulty Colorsofts have left some Kindle owners without an e-reader

This is slightly off-topic but does the Colorsoft also have the power button idiotically placed on the bottom of the device like the Kindle Paperwhite? Seriously, that's my number one major complaint about the Paperwhite. Who thought that was a good idea?

8 dead, 2,700 injured after simultaneous pager explosions in Lebanon

Seriously? You've missed how Hezbollah have been lobbing rockets at Israel (as in, Israel proper, not settlements on the West Bank) since right after Hamas attacked Israel on October 7th?
