Ars was briefly hacked yesterday; here’s what we know

    > Umm, let's say Justin Bieber is a huge fan of Ars Technica. The hackers wouldn't need to, Ars would have already doxxed him for their own gains ala Snowden.

NSA leaker Ed Snowden’s life on Ars Technica

I really dislike this and the "OMG hot GF" article from yesterday. I can only hope they were posted as some sort of experiment to show what our digital life can reveal about us. If it's just for the ad bucks...well, that's just sad.

Anatomy of a hack: How crackers ransack passwords like “qeadzcwrsfxv1331”

All of these passwords *could* be generated by a random password generator. A great password generator would have the logic used in these types of cracking tools built in and exclude high risk passwords.

Sony’s 4K UltraHD TVs plummet in price, but content still scarce

Some day I'll have a humongous 4K display to watch hockey on, and it will be awesome. My big problem is that Comcast compresses the crap out of the cable signal already, so their 1080 already looks like garbage. 4K won't fix that, in fact it would probably make it worse.

Researchers: movie studios sold more after Megaupload was shut down

10+ years ago I used to. You had to download 30-40 parts of a rar file from multiple IRC bots and FTP servers. There was a great thrill in the hunt for all of the pieces and in possessing something that only a few people in the world had. Since then I've given up my wanton ways.

Megabad: A quick look at the state of Mega’s encryption

Win tablets, games, and collectibles in the 2012 Ars Child's Play Drive

What does "Limit: One entry per person and one entry per e-mail address during the Promotion Period." mean? Aren't all entries made by people, rendering the "and one entry per e-mail address" redundant?

How an all-star team put an end to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill

"marathon oil spill" is an interesting phrase considering that Marathon Oil is a company that (I believe) also participates in offshore oil drilling.

Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition review: Flawed, but still classic

I loved BG, but I couldn't get in to BGII. I started playing multiple times and I think the advanced level spells were overwhelming to me. I mean, it came with like a 100 page guide on the various skills/spells your characters can use. I liked the simplicity of the lower level game.
