“Slapped cheek” virus is surging across Europe and US, CDC warns

Really? :ROFLMAO: I guess it’s the safe option.

Surface Pro 11 and Laptop 7 review: An Apple Silicon moment for Windows

I recall one of the new devices getting 1200 hours on standby, roughly 0.7 Watts per 12 hours vs 1 Watt per hour on previous machines. So, yeah, sleeping is a go.

Apple’s 24-page defense of its repair strategy also contains some policy changes

Anyone else find it interesting to see 0.1 % failure rates mentioned on volumes of 100 million? That’s still 100,000 failures. If this was on $25 products, it wouldn’t be a big deal.

RIP ICQ: Remembering a classic messaging app that was way ahead of its time

What a small world! I lived in Bolivar, 30 minutes north on Highway 13, for 20 some years. Then, worked in Marshfield, 20 miles east of Springfield on I-44, for 3 years. Now, I’ve been in Nevada, MO, an hour north of Joplin, for 25 years. Sorry, no ICQ memories. Just AIM on dialup memories.

Periods are starting earlier, becoming less regular, iPhone study finds

Wouldn’t exposure to a more sexually active society that promotes sexually explicit forms of entertainment, like found on social media, contribute to this result? I would think so. What one feeds their minds can affect growth behavior. The body adapts, right? It shouldn’t be surprising.

Do you need a dentist visit every 6 months? That filling? The data is weak

The dental industry suffers from the same overcharging and billing BS as the rest of the health industry. They have long assumed they can ride on the insurance billing bandwagon and milk the rest of us for all we have. Twenty years ago I used to just walk in to get a tooth pulled for $400. Now...

Strap in: We test a full-motion off-road racing simulator from CXC

Then, add sea sickness on top of that, when it’s installed on the ship. No thanks! :\ Cool story. Just wish there were more technical details.

Apple poaches AI experts from Google, creates secretive European AI lab

Actually, due to how memory-intensive AI processing is, there has been talks of moving parts of the AI processing to the RAM modules themselves. So this isn’t as far-fetched as it may appear.

After 48 years, Zilog is killing the classic standalone Z80 microprocessor chip

That’s exactly the way I felt. I, too, started assembly on the TRS-80. Then, tried my hand on the much simpler 6502. Ouch. The Z-80 is my favorite 8-bit processor. It had 16-bit registers and powerful addressing modes. I’ve written a lot of graphics code for it. Of course, the TRS-80 only had...

SpaceX’s most-flown reusable rocket will go for its 20th launch tonight

If I had to choose which business would most likely fail, I’d choose a rocket business over an automotive business. Yet, ironically, SpaceX is far and away the most amazing and successful of the businesses. I suppose some of it is from doing business with organizations that have deep pockets...

Would chatbots make the same driving decisions as us?

I think this thought experiment is highly misleading, unrealistic, and over complicates the situation, because it assumes the driver knows either decision will definitely result in the death of all individuals on that particular path. I know that may be beside the point here. Real life is based...

Zuckerberg says sorry for Meta harming kids—but rejects payments to families

Although I agree that these companies should bear some responsibility, it is the parents of these children that have the obligation and responsibility to set guidelines and limits for social media. After all, that’s what parents are for. If a form of entertainment is harmful and detrimental to...

Hackers can break SSH channel integrity using novel data-corruption attack

I assume this applies to SFTP, as well. Seems wrapping it in a VPN tunnel is the best approach.

0-60 mph in a straight line? Yes. Cornering or stopping? Not likely.

The 2023 Toyota Crown can’t decide if it’s a sedan or a crossover

Well, you can either get great gas mileage and efficiency and low power, or you can get greater performance and less efficiency. Just can't get both. Although, 30 mpg from 340 HP isn't bad. I'd just like a Lexus IS 350 as BEV.

Banks serving as guinea pigs for Federal Reserve’s instant payments system

No mention of transaction fees. Will this replace the other payment processors like MasterCard, Visa, Discover, and American Express? I work at a very small newspaper and print shop business and our credit card / debit card processing fees are through the roof now at almost $1,000 monthly...

Lucid will supply Aston Martin with leading-edge electric powertrains

I’m not aware that Lucid builds any axial flux motors. They are all radial flux designs. Their power to weight designs are among the best in the industry for radial flux. So, if they were to switch to axial flux designs and solve the manufacturing issues, they’d even be better.

Submarine missing near <em>Titanic</em> used a $30 Logitech gamepad for steering

That makes no sense. When the weights come off that side, the sub is not going to want to shift to the other side, no matter how many people try to rotate it back. Unless, it’s removing the ballast on the side the passengers moved to, which also doesn’t make sense.
