Ars forum updates are now here!

I tried to paste, but the image was too large. Uploading instead. Note the oranges don't match. Orange is the best colour ever, but make it the same orange.

Ars forum updates are now here!

My avatar appears (to me at least) as a K in an orange circle. The orange is NOT Ars Orange. I want my K to be in an Ars Orange circle. Thanks. EDIT: In fact it's doing my head in the oranges don't match. Blech.

10 years of FTL: The making of an enduring spaceship simulator

Not many comments here. Possibly because you have, like me, spent half the day playing FTL. Never heard of it before today. It's great! Go play! I did quite well on my first game and failed to repeat since. Re "Roguelike". IMO a term appropriated by people who have never played Rogue. I've...

Avatar: The Way of Water trailer brings us closer to a mighty heartbeat

Oh my gosh. Nobody here has seen Avatar 2. Maybe it's really good. Let's find out before having opinions.

Apple patches high-severity 0-day for iPhones and iPads

They report them when its in their interest to report them. It's happened multiple times. "Dear Vendor, Enemy Agency XYZ in Evilistan is targeting journalists via your product. Here's what's going on. With love, Good Guys Agency ABC".

“Too much and too soon”—Steven Sinofsky looks back at Windows 8, 10 years later

I can't believe I'm defending Sinovsky but his vision was to make Windows its own thing, vs Windows 11 which is designed by Mac users trying to make it more like MacOS because, ironically, no vision.

“Too much and too soon”—Steven Sinofsky looks back at Windows 8, 10 years later

I disagree. Sinovsky was visionary. His vision sucked on desktop where the users are and were. Windows Phone was great.

“Too much and too soon”—Steven Sinofsky looks back at Windows 8, 10 years later

Windows 8's problem wasn't what the press thought of it, it was what users thought of it. The OS outright sucked on desktops. Nothing good about it. At all. Windows 8 was so good it cost Ballmer his job. A far distant second in bad UX was Office's marketing logo thing in the top left.

2022 iPad Pro review: Fast chip, great screen, tough sell

Not really. It's a RISC chip with a very fancy decoding stage. (oooh! I disagreed with Statistical! I love your work, dude)

2022 iPad Pro review: Fast chip, great screen, tough sell

thadec I suspect you're on the pipe or what not (and your next message doesn't give me any reason to think differently), but just in case... parallel processing happens all the time on CPUs with multiple cores. Including the mobile device in your pocket. Or you're holding. Or snorting from.

Anonymously reported. Hmmm. Acronym agency perchance?

Meta Quest Pro hands-on: An unimpressive first impression

VR/AR is niche/dead in the water until the tech is as prevalent and unobtrusive as glasses, with contact lens equivalence a stretch goal. If your mobile/cell phone could project directly into your eyes then maybe I'd begin to think Meta has a shot. Headsets are a dead end.

Tired of laundry folding? AI breaks the robot folding speed record

Nice tech demo, but they've not addressed the root cause which is Clothes Folders are a heinous cult on par with Scientology. You know I'm right! :-) Slight more seriously I don't have any urge what-so-ever to fold clothes, I just don't understand why you'd spend your time doing that.

This YouTube star re-created Rings of Power title sequence in Chladni figures

And that's why I dumped satellite and embraced this life of piracy. It was a very entertaining call when I cancelled, the dude had no idea. "Why are you cancelling?" "Low bandwidth" "But you have 4K, sir!"

Google’s newest AI generator creates HD video from text prompts

Just another black hat vs white hat arms race. Forgeries are undetectable until they're not. Shrug. It'd be fun to try generate some out-there movies we're all desperate to see: "Ghostbusters Star Wars Flashdance My Neighbour Totoro John Belushi Bruce Willis Ewok Jedis 120 minutes". GO!

EA’s new anti-cheat tools dip into the dreaded “kernel mode”

As soon as you click OK to a UAC prompt from an application installer your Windows OS is compromised to some degree anyway. UAC=installer can do All The Things. Do you really know what's going on? I've no idea what really happened to my PC last time I installed a game or updated my video...

No more deadly ragers at Airbnb rentals—or so the company hopes

Australian here, and I can tell you that AirBnB has stopped parties at house a few doors up from me -- consequently I am massive fan of their new policy. I live in a terrace house -- imagine a rectangle of about 30 joined houses with the inner portion comprising backyards that share fences. You...
