Why wouldn't the United States want to try to set the world standard in every technology that it possibly could and breathe clean air? Keep on ceding that all the jobs, new economic opportunities and screw it what's the point anymore. It's only going to get more stupid and fast

You'd think with Elon whispering in his ear that he wouldn't be blocking pro EV things on the first day.
He's banking it on hurting smaller startups and other manufacturing than his company. He thinks that his business can survive with fewer competitors after this.

America voted for this.

From the outside, it looks like the greatest nation on the planet is imploding under the massively increasing pressure of raw stupidity.

Democracy has failed. The US is now effectively an ochlocracy. Mob rule has succeeded in framing intellectuals as "evil elitist", a view promoted by media wholly controlled by oligarchs.

It sounds crazy. But it's where you're at.

Many of you Arsians did not vote for this. I know. And I am sorry for the pain it will give you the next many years (much more than four). But to be blunt: if you feel like you're on the side of sanity, then FFS get out there and advocate for more sanity! To friends, family, or from a soapbox at your local Walmart.

It's annoying and painful. But it's what you gotta do. Fight for a better world, and attribute actual time and money for doing it! Yes, really. Several hours a week, and a share of your wallet.

Put your time and your wallet where your mouth (and heart) is. You are where you are, because too few people did exactly that.

How is it that presidential executive orders can countermand legislation? What challenges should we expect to see to these efforts?
They cannot. Such orders would be thrown out by court order if anyone challenged them. EOs define how the administration is to enforce the law, they do not define the law. That is left to the courts.

It's possible that's where the whispers came from, given that it appears Tesla would rather not contribute to an effort that helps their competitors more than it helped Tesla (at least, until recently?)

Elon no longer sees Tesla as an EV car company, so he doesn't care.
It has also been clear for a while that he doesn't care much about Tesla in general. Newer shinier things (who may run on gigantic amounts of fossil fuel, like rockets) have his attention now. I doubt he even fully realizes that if Tesla goes bust so goes his status as the richest man on Earth (but he only cares about Mars anyways)

Kamala won the Asian vote by 20 points, but it was lower than in 2020. 40% of Asians voted for Trump.

I know that you wanted to say Arsians, but still.

So he just issued executive orders that countermand the laws that Congress passed and the former President signed. Interesting ... what is it called when a "leader" of a country does something like this?

Awesome!

/s (rule of law; you mean rule of moi... now where's Xi and Puti, we need to put in 18 holes.)

Elon doesn't care because none of this impacts Tesla, theoretically. But Elon is a boob who thinks going to Mars will save us.

"Us"? I'm pretty sure the only person Musk cares about saving is himself.

If a miracle occured tomorrow and Optimus suddenly became the general-purpose fully-autonomous android that Tesla pretends so hard they will be, Musk would disappear into a fully-automated luxury survival bunker faster than you can say "Ted Faro".

Unfortunately, he'd still grace the world with his "wisdom" via X...

Trying to dredge up my memory from the first time we went through this hell, can't California just refuse to register vehicles instead and effectively accomplish the same thing?
I don't know if they could outright refuse but I am fairly certain they could adjust fees to get the desired outcome; i.e. register your new EV for $40, your new ICE vehicle for $5,000. I am also certain that would bring some sort of lawsuit but, you know, that's America.

Anyone ever see Gundam 00?

Opening Gist - the world develops mostly clean power. (space based solar that goes down space elevators tot he ground from a giant orbit solar ring - hey its Gundam anime deal)

But all the oil based countries refused to get on board and participate becasue oil was their income and power source... basically whole world leaves them behind and they become 3rd world collapsed failed states...

This really feels like the US is teeing itself up to race into that notional future as a failed state and be left behind.

The real winners of this election are lawyers. The courts are going to be extremely busy with all the lawsuits over whether executive orders are valid across a wide variety of issues.
Well, the fascists win quite big as well. 1500 of them just pardoned. I think that will have a much bigger lasting impact on the future of the country than the legal fees.

Which is funny, because relaxing ICE restrictions actually means Tesla can be undercut by the much larger OEMs like Ford and GM. Tesla has all of its eggs in one basket so to speak, while others can produce BEVs, PHEVs, and pure ICE as the market requires. And Tesla sales aren't looking great as he goes full Nazi and the company is inextricably linked to his persona.

You forgot the important and sadly relevant asterisk of "*In a functioning court system that hasn't already been captured by interests who don't care about the law or Constitution".

Musk doesn't think going to Mars will save us. He thinks by going there he can set up his own fiefdom where his will is law, and all are subservient to him and his wishes as their god-king and sole provider.

Good look exporting your 20mpg vehicles to Europe when their mandates start getting into force.
I take hope in the fact that a vehicle generation is longer than 4 years, the next 3 years or so are already designed and being readied for manufacturing with massive sunk costs, and that heavy manufacturers like automakers take a much longer view than most US corporations. Personally I think this is all a lot of nothing, because automakers know he'll be gone in 4 years (term limits), democrats will reinstate the old rules, so there's no point in changing course. Worst case is they avoid a few fines if BEVs don't sell as well as expected.

The country will fundamentally change. It's looking like it will be for the worse, but there's some hope of waking up and reversing out of this insane course.

Apart from the bit where he's far too scared to ride his own rockets. Presumably he'll try to rule from afar, where it's nice and safe.
