Not bad from the spec sheets but nothing that really stands out. ~18 minute 10-80 isn't bad but it's certainly not class leading and not keeping up with what some Chinese brands are offering. Efficiency based on the EPA cycle is ~3.9 miles per kWh. Again not bad but not class leading. Hard to compare on value to other similar EVs until we get more details on what "around 60k" means and what "really well-equipped" means. Nothing wrong with it per se but also nothing that immediately seems exciting either.

Yeah I don't, at a glance, see why one would choose this over the BMW iX3.

If my first-day EX30 pre-order taught me anything, it's that we'll see the single-motor variant not in April as promised, but in 2028. Until then the starting price will be (licks finger, feels direction and temperature of the prevailing winds) $72,000

Well, I was a third day pre-order, but otherwise: totally agree.

Turn signals? (I kid!)

If I had to replace my current EV for some reason, my candidates are

[ETA: all the pluses and minutes I used got converted to bullet points, ugh]

Rivian R2
  • + Cost (cheaper)
  • + American company
  • - 400V architecture and slower charging speeds
  • - Likely to have more issues since they're still a newish car company
  • - Unsure about their new AI/automated driving system will work (and it wont ship until end of 26, I believe)

BMW iX3
  • + Its a BMW, so I am expecting it to be nicer inside the car (actual luxury not bargain luxury)
  • + 800V fast charging
  • + Range (400 mi)
  • - Cost (more expensive)
  • - Unsure about how well their automated driving system works

Volvo EX60
  • + Volvos are still safety oriented, right?
  • + 800V fast charging
  • - Cost (more expensive)
  • - They've been fluctuating on their automated driving system (I think they just shitcanned LIDAR for the 90-series)

(Again, all range estimates are based on the US EPA test cycle; if you see different numbers online at non-US publications, those are using Europe’s WLTP test.)

So sad that you had to add that, because people forget what they read in the first paragraph of the article, and then get combative in the comment section when they are corrected.

I mean, if the EX60 is Swedish, that makes the iX3 Hungarian, no? If the iX3 is German, then the EX60 is Chinese…
Volvo is headquartered in Sweden. It’s listed on the Stockholm stock exchange. It’s a Swedish company. Like many other corporations it produces products worldwide. Apple is not Chinese because it produces some products in China. Don’t overthink this.

Another new vehicle that will not be on my short list when I decide to buy something new. Actually, one more reason the likelihood of me buying a new vehicle any time soon is rapidly diminishing. Primarily touch interface, giant screen hot glued to the dash and in the wrong orientation (IMO), massive wheels even on the base model that increase NVH, cost of replacement, likelihood of being damaged, and reduces efficiency and just being yet another friggin crossover. At this point I don't even really care that much about power and range. I want a vehicle I could see myself enjoying the act of driving. This isn't that. It's not even close.

Heh, that looks just like my shopping list. I'm less worried about ADAS levels and more about step-in height for some ageing family members and who can have one in my garage when the lease on my current car ends in December. It's an XC60 PHEV that I really like, so Volvo has an advantage there, but the teething pains of the 30 and 90-series and BMW's rapid climb in reliability ratings are making this a tough decision. I want the R2 to work for me, but PA's franchise laws put the nearest Rivian dealer in Virginia, and its off-road-ness probably puts the ride height out of range anyway.

Feel free to sell the old set and buy whatever your heart desires on TireRack.
Not nearly as easy as that sounds. -1 or -2 sizing for tires is easy, but shrinking wheels without causing interference can get pretty tricky. Even keeping the backspacing and wheel width the same won't guarantee the spokes won't scrape the calipers.

My 2022 C40 was designed in Gothenburg and built in Ghent, Belgium. Things haven't changed much since then. Design direction and brand identity are still maintained in Sweden, even if they are bankrolled by Geely.

Maybe depending on clearances. If they have large brakes to make it easier to stop the heavy BEV it might be tough to downsize even with new rims. Should be safe if they actually offer a model with that smaller size but if it's below the smallest size they offer you might not be able to pull it off or might have a very limited selection of rims that can work with the clearances.

On ICE cars it's kind of a what ever. I don't necessarily care for it but the impact is relatively minimal. A little bit less efficient isn't ideal but you can easily size up the gas can to get longer range and refueling on long trips is quick and easy. BEVs it doesn't work quite the same. Increased battery capacity is hard and expensive and charging isn't as easy or as quick on those road trips. I'd still rather plug in to charge at home as needed.

This looks promising to me. I'd love to know how the assisted driving system stacks up to the rest of the EV space. I have an older Tesla and I would love to get rid of Elon, but everything else I've tried in that regard is trash so far (I don't care what the Internet likes to say--it works very well for me). And I'm not going to just divest of a depreciating asset I otherwise really like because I no longer like the owner.
Also, where will this be built?
Sweden.

Can we please stop with the unavoidable masturbatory huge wheels that reduce range, reduce ride quality, reduce durability, and increase tire replacement costs? Please just give me 18" aero wheels. I'm not trying to get laid. I'm trying to get to my destination.

21" on the Cross Country? That does not make sense if Volvo thinks their customers are going to be taking it on forest roads. Or is that more "aspirational"?

I thought we were getting away from the giant touchscreens and going back to physical controls. Maybe Volvo hasn't gotten the memo?
At least it looks like actual buttons on the steering wheel and not capacitive touch buttons like Lexus RX/NX have. I love my lexus, but I actively tell people not to buy them because the buttons on the steering wheel only working half the time is a royal pain in the ass.

Aren't cars only certified for a few manufacturer offered tyre sizes? It certainly wouldn't be street‑legal for me here to fit 14" wheels on a car that only ever shipped with 16" and 18" wheels, that would be a hard fail at any regular inspection and quite possibly at least partially invalidate my accident insurance in any accident even if not my fault.

Of course, the US mess of what constitutes "street‑legal" car or even a "mandatory regular inspection" being what it is (or not existing much at all) and varying so much state by state, it might not really be an issue over the pond, as much as it baffles me.

What's with the squircle steering wheel? I thought that shite died with Tesla for pretty good reasons.

Or is it just an optical illusion of combining different thicknesses of black and beige materials around the rim? It's a bit hard to tell whether the wheel is fully circular or not (which might have been the intended design effect, but would still be nice to know whether it's a circle or not).

At least it's still got a place for my hand to go when I'm reversing, at 12 o'clock, unlike the stupid yoke steering wheels.

I was under the impression they're owned by Geely. If that's incorrect, I apologise!

Yeah I tried that with my current car and will never attempt such foolishness again.

100% predicated on finding a buyer who's not some craiglist grundletaster and will actually follow through on pickup. I don't have the space for a second set of wheels & tires and it ended up being easier to sell the aftermarket wheels and tires for what I paid for them, and keep the stupid OEM 20 inchers.
