I woke up from a zombie dream this morning, and realized that I was having the dream because I am the zombie. I have not really worked on any projects, I have been kinda phoning it in at work (because of the holidays and then vacation), not working out, etc. I have been the zombie for the last month, shuffling aimlessly from my desk to the kitchen to the couch to bed and repeating the cycle, over and over. Numbing myself with alcohol and easy entertainments.

Why does this make me happy? Because knowing you are in a rut is the first step to getting out of said rut.

We got my wife's office tidied up, and purged from all the random boxes in there. It actually has space and room along with the couch we had moved in there is now clear and has Rocky's favourite blanket.

Last night when he came to tell me it was time to be done work instead of leading me downstairs, he lead me into the office and we napped on the couch.

The funniest was I realized that room is pretty isolated from the rest of the house because my wife came home, I didn't know, and didn't wake up when she was calling for us. Even Rocky didn't wake up! So now I know our new napping spot!

The CPI for Spain closed at +3.6% in 2023, coming from a +5.8% in 2022.

edit: added "+"
Oh, excellent ! I was just worried it was like here, where 5% didn't even keep pace with core CPI (5.1%). Never mind that most of us haven't made up for the 9.4% the year before yet. :(

Went to bed last night after watching a bit of a video with my wife. The video had a bit about people cleaning up and getting rid of bedbugs (squishing them with tape or vacuuming them up). Just before I woke I had a dream about being at work and somehow there was a part of the office building that had been left empty/unused for years and spiders had made merry with the stairs in particular with tons of nests and webs. The spiders had grown large, averaging 6 inch bodies, with probably another 8 inches in leg length around them for a 10 or 12 inch diameter or so overall. On top of this, they were very fuzzy with either dust or some kind of fungus or something. They had cleared out the available prey and were aggressive toward anything moving.

Somehow in my dream, I was supposed to take care of this issue and I was alternately sucking them up with an industrial shop vac or just whacking them with the end of the hose and watching them splat. I had just yelled to a coworker to get me a flame thrower when I woke up.

Normally this kind of dream content would not be a 'what happened that you liked?' event but I woke with a rush of fear, adrenaline, and satisfaction that I was actually turning the tide against the spiders and would shortly be toasting them with a flame thrower. Decent way to start a Friday morning, I guess.

Just wait until tonight's dream, where the survivors have regrouped and brought reinforcements.

Reinforcements from Australia.

My W-2 came today so I decided to get a head start on my taxes. Both FreetTaxUSA and TaxAct say the same thing I owe 0 dollars. I did everything perfectly with my withholdings.

Of course I know once I get a few 1099s in I will end up owing the feds some money, but for now I will bask in this small victory.

Everyone who has ever played Risk knows that world conquest starts in Australia.
Except for that one time when my friends thought they'd successfully pushed me into irrelevancy from North America into Kamchatka and began sniping each other throughout Europe, Africa and the Americas while ignoring this guy who was building a defensive line around Asia. I took that game because by the time they recognized that I was a threat again I'd already snipped a location in NA, Europe and Africa to stop their bonus resource generation and started the Asian takeover of the world.

I spent the day paragliding by the sea in Morocco. I've only been flying once since my crash last year, and I was pretty nervous for the first flight today. I started with a simple top to bottom sled ride and totally nailed take off and landing, then another two longer flights soaring a long escarpment. Much happier and have some confidence back, though I have loads of respect for the air and what it can do to a person dangling under a big bit of cloth.

East Asia is my go-to strategy for Risk. You can push into it and keep a defensible two- or three-territory front at all times, and once you've got the whole thing it has a great resources-to-front ratio.

When my wife and I had first moved in together, not yet married, we used to go garage-sale shopping on Saturday mornings for fun. On one of those runs, we acquired a Kitchenaid mixer for $25, a real steal considering how much they are normally.

Fast forward to yesterday, my wife was working on a loaf of croissant bread. Halfway through kneading, and it sounded like the gears stripped, lots of nasty grinding and the mixer just stopped working, although the grinding continued. Since Mrs. Foolery and I have been married 22 years now, that mixer served us at least that long.

Further, when looking into getting a new one, we found that the model number we had was manufactured from 1980 to 1993. So that mixer was at least 31 years old! 😳

I get it, my life is boring.

I think they are pretty easy to fix.

Even if you dont want to bother you could probably sell it as is
I mean, Tom has those nice big shops - a countertop appliance teardown and repair should be right in his wheelhouse!

Apparently the described symptoms normally mean the worm gear needs replacing, and you probably should have been greasing the moving parts every 2-3 years.

Shortly after we got married I bought my soon-to-be-ex-wife a brand new Kitchenaid mixer. In pink, because she wanted one in pink, which cost an additional $50. That was about 15 years ago and the mixer is still good as new, because she used it like twice. She'd have ripped my head off if I'd tried to use her mixer for anything, though.

NOPE and NOPE and NOPE. One of those fucking things got me an overnight hospital stay on the back of a wee bit of 220v electrocution. I will just buy a new one, thanks.

TIL you are supposed to grease and lube a Kitchenaid. It sure doesn't look like they expect the user to do it, based on all the steps to get to the gears.
Given the process to clean and regrease it, I would guess that it's about on-par with the expectations for user servicing of any complex machinery: you're expected to have a pro do it. It's probably reasonable for a user to do it themselves if they're at least on par with changing brake pads on their car but that's not most people and, definitely, not most of Kitchenaid's target audience.

We have a mint condition Kitchenaid mixer for the same reason (well, minus the STBX part.)

Well, I don't know how you managed that. I've done plenty of small appliance repair (often replacing decrepit power cables on 20+ year old units) - never had an issue. Heck, I used to do that in the lab with old hot plates and stir plates as well. The body and guts were fine, but the power cable sheathing would age out.

It's also not an issue in the USA anyway, as it would be plugged into 120V.

All that said - if you're not confident in your DIY skills - yeah, don't mess with it.

I've done some basic work on ours, but I had a tool rental and repair shop do it up last time since there were some weird things going on. Turns out it needed a new control board - way cheap compared to a new mixer. KitchenAid has put in a plastic sacrificial gear that is usually the culprit when things go bad. You can get aftermarket metal ones, which will last much longer before needing to replace them, but it also means that the power could be transferred to something less easy (or more expensive) to replace.

After the various ways to make food hot, I'd say our mixer is the most important powered kitchen appliance we have.

LOL I most certainly tore it down to see what was wrong with it. And the worm gear is certainly shot, but there are a lot of other parts that are warn almost completely out, seeing that the mixer is at least 30 years old, and could be as old as 44. I think we are fine to spend another $300 to get another, as the controls and tilt lock are almost completely shot. Mrs. F loves baking, and this mixer has been the source of dozens of cakes, hundreds of loaves of bread, and thousands of cupcakes and croissants. I think it is time to let it go. :p

The moment I watched a similar video, and saw that you had to move around the electrics is when I decided that if it dies we will just buy a new one.
