Russia seems to have lost contact with its first lunar probe in half a century

This quote from a Reuters article:

"The apparatus moved into an unpredictable orbit and ceased to exist as a result of a collision with the surface of the Moon," Roskosmos said in a statement.

That's rather clearly stated, and it seems unusual that Roskosmos would so quickly state - assuming that it's an accurate quote.

Called this last week responding to a comment that the launch means Russia is going to beat India. I didn't want to jinx it last night, in case they somehow ended up pulling it off like Nauka in spite massive technical faults, but sadly this was always a likely possibility. I mean anything in this arena is fairly risky, but Russia's space program has degraded to the point that you have to expect failure as the most likely outcome. The really sad part is it is happening at a time when technology is lowering the barriers for entry and letting others like India stretch themselves. Just one more mile marker on Russia's road to a failed state.

I see that it's pointless to read the comments about any Russian space project. The hate is too strong.
https://www.yahoo.com/news/former-russian-president-dreams-west-190258968.html
Details: Medvedev once again began to reassure himself, posting that the West "will never go beyond what starts harming its interests too much", and the war waged by Russia against Ukraine will become "boring, costly and irrelevant".

At the same time, he did not specify when the West would start "begging for negotiations", but began to call for the destruction of Ukraine, even if it took decades. "We have no choice: Either we destroy their hostile political regime, or the collective West will eventually tear Russia apart," Medvedev said.

He once again called the Russian aggression against Ukraine an "existential conflict" and demanded that Russia fully control Ukraine.

The Moon's claimed quite a few victims lately. (Not that I was rooting for a Russian success, given their horrific actions in Ukraine...)

Technologically, the world seems to have a pretty good handle on low earth orbit and geosynchronous orbit, but clearly the Moon is a tier up in difficulty.

Here's hoping the Astrobotic lander and ISRO landers are able to break the combo...

Well, duh, and I say that as someone who usually would rather read informative breakdowns of the technical issues that resulted in a failure, but come on! Given the current geopolitical situation I hardly expected anything other than the multipage schadenfreude celebration we are getting.

Sometimes you have to just wait and watch the parade pass by...

Personally, putin and roscosmos can lick my balls right around to the brown, and I think I speak for the majority of literate and intelligent westerners. Help those that are struggling so hard to DESTROY civilization???? Not effing likely. Wait till that lunatic in North Korea fires one of the ICBMs that putin gave him and drops a nuke on Seoul or Seattle. And that is not even considering the invasion of the Ukraine, that is polarizing the world into two armed camps, one of which wants to do putin's dream of destruction.

Yeah, I'll help them with their pathetic space program.
Personally, I wouldn't let Putin anywhere near my balls. I don't have that much respect for him.

I imagine Russians are feeling like Carrie at the end of the 1976 movie, with her mom's voice repeating in her head: They're all going to laugh at you! They're all going to laugh at you!
Sounds like you're predicting murder/suicide by nuclear hellfire?

Even two years ago, NASA would likely have been working feverishly to help them reestablish contact. Sad that the Russian government put us in a place where even basic space cooperation is hard again.
You mean before 2014? or before 2008, or before 1999 or before 1994? or any other dates russians have been murderous dicks to their neighbours?

I'm sure Russia will blame Ukranian "terrorism" for their failure, despite the fact that they are Hitlering their way through eastern Europe to conquer land masses.

They can't produce their own weaponry and must buy it from humanitarian countries like North Korea, and can't build UAVs so must get those from peace loving countries like Iran... and they can't seem to avoid crashing into things, like the Crimea bridge, Kyev, and now The Moon.

There is no monopoly on common sense, on either side of the political fence -- Sting.

But many are funny and damned appropriate...

Yes, science should be apolitical, but here you have a country that is actively murdering the citizens of its neighbor for nothing other than the glory of its sad old despotic idiot leader and some delusional and very imaginary past magnificence... it uses any successes for propaganda and to keep its war machine going so it can continue to enrich a select few kleptocrats at the top...

So no, wishing them well is not and should not be on the list of things anyone with an interest in science and technology should be willing to do...
Despotic regimes have no interest in real science and seek to use science only to benefit their select few, otherwise they are an impediment to science, technology and societal evolution in general... even with the Soviets one could argue there was some sort of ideology behind their schemes... here you have a kleptocratic cult of delusional maniacs who have openly expressed a desire to destroy the west... a country that uses brutality, rape and torture as standard operating procedure not only on its victims, but on its own people and is proud of it.

Regimes like Putin's only shit on science and corrupt it with every chance they get... They put state approved idiots with little to no qualifications in charge of real scientists, they promote arrogant idiots who only interfere with and complicate any project when they are not actually diverting resources and funds for their own use.

So if someone who is truly an ally of science and technology sees such a nation fail at such a minor achievement as this, they should be happy... Not because they are being petty and spiteful, but because that failure is a success for real dedication and achievements that actually have real meaning, not some minor experiment that will have more PR value than scientific worth.

It was only a crappy probe that was lost and maybe aside from a few minor project leaders who will be scapegoated, so it's not a big deal to take delight in seeing a bully fail and loose one more bragging right.

I suggest though, that if you really mourn the loss of this probe, look around on Elmo's X, there are probably plenty of individuals there expressing their sadness and confusion over the loss of such a glorious and noble effort to put the west in its place and rightfully show everyone the superiority of the magnificent Russian empire and it's benevolent and wise ruler.

The future history reader in me was hoping this thing landed successfully and returned some pictures of a glittering pyramid on a nearby hill. Made better by Russia being totally unable to followup on the discovery and having to watch as the Beresheet 2 mission was re-targeted to investigate the pyramid.

Russia failed with Mars probes in 1996 and 2011. Now failed lunar lander. Maybe they should go all in with Venera-D radar mapper and lander. It could launch on new Angara A5. The Soviet Union sent over two dozen probes to Venus between 1964 and 1984. It would take a lot of money and resources from other current Russian projects.
