Musk (thus far) simply wants to take Twitter from a platform that was shadow banning more conservative voices and censoring legitimate stories to one that allows all voices under the law.
[SNIP]

"Shadow banning?" Like their shadows aren't permitted to tweet any longer?

No, it's the new alt-right word for "I shat on the floor and now I'm not allowed back in the pub no more! People I don't even know are pointing and laughing at me! I'm being marginalized! It's a conspiracy, I tell you!!"

5c89527fe20e1.image.png

...the worst bit of it is that it isn't even a joke. When the Very Fine People tried to coup the election on jan 6 a number of them did indeed shit on the capitol floor. The alt-right are sending their best, and THIS is indeed their best;

AP21246596305210.jpg

Argument is dead against these people. They can't be reasoned with and they view "debate" as nothing more than an attempt to sling stormfront one-liners and straw men at people.
Seeing as they've chosen to devolve from civilization to savagery I think it's time we stopped holding the door open. Cast these fucking dimwits out. Drive them away from any place reasonable people gather. Yeet them into the damn sun.

I often wonder if the loss of "frontier" (globally) means there's nowhere for the nuts to go anymore to live their fever dreams.
Alaska's still there.

The problem it has is something like 1 woman for every 3 men and that doesn't suit their trad views.

They love the cowboy myth until they discover most cowboys died single.

This is why you should always recommend such frontier afficionados to watch "Brokeback Mountain". For some real insight into the everyday lives of those hard-hitting, stetson-wearing, cattle driving pioneers.

They're also generally not enthused about learning that 20-25% of cowboys were Black and another ~12% were Mexican. Or that there's argument between historians about whether the term "cowboy" came from the use of "cow boy" as a descriptive term for Black cattle drivers, combining the diminutive "boy" with the animals of their profession.

Can Musk make it any more obvious that this is completely political and which side he will tilt "free speech":

https://twitter.com/i/web/status/1521183425914417158

"Same org that covered up Hunter Biden laptop story..."

Lol WTF does that tweet even mean. It reads like word salad.

Elon petulantly lashing out because MSNBC hurt his feelings (calling him petulant), so he's condemning their sin of not magnifying GOP conspiracy theories.

Because they're "people you disagree with?" (/s)

I'm so tired of the right, globally.

It's been nice living a substantial portion of my life where women weren't legally treated as incubators.

I can hardly wait for what's next.

And it looks like soon many states will require them to be incubators.

Feels like a corollary to "dude" in the sense that most terms of address were either clearly respectful or ambiguously disrespectful.

Like, "son," or "hey you," or "boy," or "missy." I once, while fielding a customer complaint, had someone write a letter (postage stamp and everything) to my boss complaining I had referred to her as "ma'am."

I think it's best if we just blink loudly at people to get their attention.

Is there some kind of psychological dynamic at work where being criticized makes a certain type of asshole flip conservative? Like, just spitballing here, but does a tendency toward Type B personality disorders and enough wealth to fear its loss just prime a certain type of guy to go full Republican when broadly criticized or even questioned?

Sort of.

Like Trump, Musk likes it when people lavish praise on him. Unlike Trump, Musk has actual accomplishments, but the result is the same.

The left's praise for Musk is conditional, as is the left's praise for most people. When Musk started showing his ass, the left praised him less and less. But the right loves people that the left dislikes, so they started praising him. So he started adopting their positions.

Of course, as an ultra-wealthy person, going full conservative was really only a matter of time. Fiscal conservatives can always be lured in by the promises of social conservatives.

Musk also has a healthy savior complex, which is partly why he gets so upset about any negative coverage of him or his companies.

The Left is apoplectic over this because they are no longer the sole arbiters over what is acceptable speech in the defacto town square of today. As Musk noted, banning the Hunter Biden story is an excellent example of this very common abuse. Musk has taken away the Left’s most powerful mouthpiece and given it to everyone. Now the Left is openly pushing to change the 1st amendment. They’re actually open about being against free speech. The speech has to match their definition of what is acceptable. How can they not see the potential for abuse?! All about power and control. George Orwell is turning in his grave.

Another drive by from a new account, Hunter Biden, "town square", and it has a sick 1984 reference to boot. This post hit all the hollow talking points in one go.

edit: dropped the bingo reference, got beat to it

He referred to "George Orwell," whose actual name was Eric Blair, and was born in India.

So, yes. I will check the "ironic bigotry" box and call Bingo.

Not sure I'm following you on the "ironic bigotry" box here? Just because he called him George Orwell? Isn't that the name most people know him by? Or is there something I'm missing in his post.

Oh my. White saviour complex with his background, what could ever go wrong?

(Sorry, I'd usually be the last one to bring anyone's country of birth to the discussion of one's personality, especially with being born in a WP country myself, but this just asked for it!)

Well, there is also his Radio Free Albemuth novel with the Ferris F. Fremont as POTUS, closely affiliated with the fascist "Friends of the American People" – very much presciently and quite nicely abbreviated as "FAPers". Certainly not the timeline I hoped for!

I really feel like needing a good breath of Ubiq™ spray right now...

I steamed some artichokes the other night before grilling them, with some garlic and mint in the liquid, and kept the liquid thinking I could maybe use it in cooking pasta, but am now think I'll just toss it int potato-leek soup.

Thoughts?

I had spaghettios...
Yeah, but what's the best variant of Khachapuri? Imeruli? Adjaruli? All the choices!

Whichever one I can get on foodstamps?
I'm really not a foodie, even though I worked commercial kitchens for about 25 years.

I'm much more of a "shove it in the microwave and press 1 minute. When it beeps, stick my finger in it to see if I need to press 1 minute again."

BUT, in the spirit of where this thread has ended up, I honestly feel morally obligated to add:

Pineapple on pizza is delicious.

ETA: Clicked your link and was like "oh, which Georgia?... Cheese filled bread... Oh, that helps."

Well, there is Georgia and then there is Georgia. One is known for its home-made wine, delicious cheese pastries, Caucasus mountains and fiercely resisting Russian invasions for centuries, while the other is well known for...? ;)

Jokes aside, if you have any Georgian restaurant nearby, do try some Khachapuri or Khinkali (or look up the recipes if on food stamps, sorry). I am very particular to the Adjarian variant of the former, but they are all very good! And Khinkali is just... delicious2!

It has occurred to me that whatever else Musk does, he should have Twitter redesigned structurally so that each Tweet is stored as a separate NFT directly on a blockchain. That would:

a) ensure that no matter what any regulatory body should decide, tweets will never be deleted (edits could still be supported in the UI, but would be district entries on the back end)
b) enable a secondary market for ‘famous’ tweets as an additional revenue stream

For (a) to work, the entire content of the tweet must be written to the blockchain, not just a URL, but that’s not technically a problem. It’s a neat solution to both the moderation and revenue issues he may face as the new owner.

there - that should be enough to power this thread past the 2000 point

I lived in the other Georgia for over 20 years. The only good thing I can say about it is "I'm not there!"

Seriously, it's like living in a fart - and I don't mean an "oops, I pooted" fart, I mean those farts you get the morning after a 12 hour tequilla and taco bell binge.

The "seasons" there are summer, August, summer, February 7th. And instead of snow, every april all the plants, vines, and trees ejeculate a couple inches of yellow pollen all over everything.

“The light” first went on for me in an introductory linguistics class when the professor presented several examples of “lady” used perjoratively.

“Hey lady! Move your fucking car!”

I think Elon will solve the timid advertiser problem by shutting down the posts of those who are calling for boycotts. After all, if free speech is to survive, then that speech that calls to end free speech must not be tolerated. Call it a paradox of tolerance. Silencing the enemies of free speech is still consistent with the principles of free speech.

Elon Musk made it clear that legal speech is allowed. Boycotts are free speech. Part of freedom of speech is freedom of association and the freedom to not associate with people or companies who support things you find terrible. Banning talk of boycotts is pretty authoritarian and steps even further than banning people who get people stirred up to harass the parents of murdered children
Boycotts are economic action. If they were free speech, then there would be no legal way for the federal government to prohibit transactions with prohibited parties(Iran, North Korea, etc)

The government puts limits on speech all the time. The idea that “if it was speech, government couldn’t limit it” holds no water.
You left out the important qualifying word(free). "If they were free speech" meaning speech that couldn't legally be limited under the law. Obviously some speech can be restricted. The claim wasn't that "Boycotts are speech", it was that "Boycotts are free speech." Obviously the governments can restrict direct calls for violence, because they aren't free speech. If it can legally be restricted by the government, then it isn't free speech, ergo economic transactions with prohibited entities aren't free speech.

So you believe that "This company supports hate groups so maybe you shouldn't give them money" is dangerous speech that shouldn't be permitted?
It doesn't sound dangerous to me. It might conflict with the goals a private corporation may have, so they should feel free to censor it if they choose to though.

Nope. Boycotts absolutely are free speech. And there are plenty of things that are “free speech” that the government can restrict. Lying in advertising, for one.

You are quite literally trying to remove any ability for people to rebuke bad speech, and to choose not to associate with assholes.
Nope. All those things you can say legally without government interference? That is "free speech". All the other stuff? Just speech, with the possibility of having it removed and paying a consequence for it. Lying in advertising isn't free speech, specifically because you can't legally do it. The US definition of free speech is quite broad, other countries will have a narrower definition.

Musk has said legal speech is permitted. Calling for boycotts of companies that have their ads alongside the inevitable bigoted shit that's going to end up on Twitter is allowed on his Twitter.

Thoughts from watching Tesla stock freefall:

I wonder if this is all a ruse to crash Tesla stock so he can take it private more cheaply.

That's a little 4D space chess for me, but TSLA investors sure seem not impressed by all this.
If you look at the 2 year price chart, investors are still doing incredibly well. If they bought in the bubble, well, sorry but you bought into a bubble, nobody feels bad for you. There is no freefall here.

Yes, I'm aware. And I theorized he might want to make an exception for speech that harms the viability of his free speech platform. Round and round we go...
