Apple has supposedly stopped shipping the iPhone 3G to AT&T stores, adding to the speculation that a new iPhone is coming and the iPhone 3G will soon reach end of life. The latest rumor, which originates from Boy Genius Report, also states that Apple is no longer taking new iPhone 3G orders. Additionally, Mac Rumors reports that customers in Australia and the UK are experiencing problems ordering the 3G, showing that this shortage isn’t limited to the US.
We learned at the iPhone OS 4 event last month that some of the features in Apple’s newest operating system would not be supported on the iPhone 3G. Because of this, it’s no real surprise that the low-end iPhone model, which retails for $99 with a two-year contract through AT&T, may in fact be discontinued.
It is unclear when a new iPhone will emerge, however, and this news leads us to believe that it will happen sooner rather than later. If we had to guess, early summer seems about as safe as it gets. With the entrance of the new phone onto the market (possibly named iPhone HD), it seems likely that the iPhone 3GS will take over the budget slot currently occupied by the iPhone 3G.
